Q&A with Darth Frodo

Hey, everyone! Two years ago, this project started as a way to reach out to authors who had left some beloved projects unfinished, mostly to reach out to them and see how they were doing, show them appreciation, and see if they needed any support in case they wanted to finish their projects or just wanted to have fun sharing behind the scenes information and tips through a Q&A.

As a part of bringing this project half-back to life, I would like to present the first Q&A of this project, in this case with the one and only @darthfrodophantom, who returned after almost 10 years to the phandom to share the ending for "A Secret Uncovered".

❇️ About Darth Frodo ❇️

[AO3] [FFN] A multi-fandom writer who has also written for Danny Phantom since the show was still on air, Darth Frodo joined the phandom classics early in the Fanfiction.Net era with beloved works such as "Tortured Truth" (2006) and "A Secret Uncovered" (First published on 2006). The latter was left on standby as life happened, but Darth's desire to finish the story was always close to her heart.

Her love for identity shenanigans and the philosophical analysis behind characters also took her to explore other ideas and stories back in the day, but also recently as she returned to the phandom for events such as Ectoberhaunt or the DP Reality Trip AU Zine, for which she published delightful new adventures.

Now that she has rewritten all of her first vision for "A Secret Uncovered" and added an incredible ending and epilogue, we reached out to Darth with a few questions...

❇️ Q&A ❇️

Q: What inspired you to write your story ("A Secret Uncovered")?

Darth: Not sure if you’ve caught on to this based on pretty much everything I write, but I love identity reveal fics. I love the awkward tension that happens right before, during, and after the reveal. I love the moment where you just don’t know how it’s going to turn out. And I love watching the aftermath of the characters struggling to adjust. I really wanted to write an identity reveal fic on a huge level that involved everyone finding out, and it kinda went from there.

Q: Who is your favorite character to write and why?

Darth: I feel like I have to say Danny because he’s pretty much my POV of choice. His internal monologues are so fun to dive into because he’s witty and snarky, but he can also be so clueless sometimes. I love putting him into different scenarios and watching him struggle through them. But if I had to pick a character outside of Danny, I’d have to go with Jazz. I just feel like I get her. She’s the mom friend and the big sister who ‘s an overachiever, and I love that. Jazz can connect pretty obscure dots, be the emotional comfort, and a voice of reason, which are so helpful.

Q. Are there any characters or types of scenes (action, dialogue, ect) that you struggle to write?

Darth: I feel like I struggle the most with transitions. How do we move from one scene to the next and conveying what happened in the downtime we don’t cover? How do we give the readers a sense of the emotional or logistical events that happened without actually having to spell it all out, but also not make it too exposition heavy? I want to include the details, but I don’t want to bog people down with exposition and passive tenses. It’s contrary to that “show don’t tell” tenet of writing, but it’s also acknowledging that from an editing perspective, you can’t show every minute. (Of course this is now all you're going to pay attention to when reading my writing lol)

Q. This one is based on a screenshot I saw on tumblr of a tweet saying "writing a fic consists of having one scene you want to write and scrambling to come up with an entire plot just so you can write one scene." If this applies to your story, what is THAT SCENE for your fic?

Darth: I actually did! I literally pictured the scene where Danny walks into school that first day after his secret has been revealed and everyone stares at him and whispers about him and crowds around him. When I first thought of doing an “everyone finds out” identity reveal, this was the first scene that popped into my head, and everything else spun from that concept.

I have a very big announcement to make, and it’s one I hope you’ll all be excited for. I know I am.

(Maybe it’s one you’ve been expecting seeing the crossposting I’ve been doing on AO3.)

I’m going to be releasing the final chapter of A Secret Uncovered in 10 DAYS.

That’s right. After 10 years since my last update and after 17 years since its publication, I’m going to be releasing the final chapter in 10 DAYS.

So to (hopefully) help get you pumped and psyched, I’m going to start a Countdown to A Secret Uncovered. Every day leading up to the release of the chapter, I’ll be posting a little something about the process with little insights or tidbits. And then on 9/25 the final chapter will be up!

So for day 10, we have 10 years since my last update. So what are 10 things that have changed since I last posted a chapter for this fic?

I grew up (a lot) and I hope my writing matured along with it. And I did all kinds of adult things.

Discord Danny Phantom communities appeared

We have the first canon content in this Phandom since the show (seriously, still can’t believe this one)

Popular AU tags like No One Knows AU or Corpse AU tags being used

COVID – hard to sometimes remember a time existed before that

Danny Phantom is streaming and we actually have complete access to all the episodes (and not the messed up DVDs that skipped beloved season 2 episodes)

The creation and use of Wes as an established fan character

The Dannypocalypse started

Phandom events like Invisobang, Phic Phight, and Ectoberhaunt/Ectober Week

Lance Thunder Reporting Live’s daily weather updates (look I love these)

I’m sure there are a lot more things in the phandom that have changed over the years (and a lot more that's changed in the world too), but it’s sometimes insane to think of just how many things can happen in 10 years.

He has found himself in Europe, with a weight on his back and a secret- sleeping in alleyways and metro stations when the security officers don’t force him out. But on a rainy day under the Eiffel Tower, he meets a young man who shows him the first kindness he’s seen in months, and a friendship is born. Update: Help Wanted

Hey, everyone! @summerssixecho here returning from living under a (stressful) rock.

First of all, I want to apologize to everyone involved in this project for putting everything on hiatus at the beginning of the year. Life happened and it has given me barely any time to write or continue with phandom activity, including this project.

So here are some notes for what’s to come and some additional thoughts I’d like to share with you all:

Help Wanted

As you’ve seen in previous posts on this blog, the response has been incredible from authors and collaborators willing to participate in this. I first envisioned it as something small and casual but never imagined the tons of love from readers and interest from authors this would have. Thank you for this on behalf of everyone participating in any way.

That said, I’d like to admit we need help to continue running this project in any of the following activities:

Moderating on Discord: the server is almost completely set up and waiting to send invitations to participants. We’d be expecting 40-50 users atm (definitely less than 100).

Contacting Participants: since we have so far almost 30 authors participating (plus several others who expressed interest), having someone else to keep in touch with new participants or communicating updates in private would be very helpful.

Let us know via ask if you would like to help in any of these roles or want to participate with anything else 💚

Next Steps

Since this has been on hiatus since early January, the Q&A submissions and times selected by authors had to be changed. Please feel free to continue submitting Q&A for any author in the Fic Rec List who has Q&A link active while we contact authors asking for their new desired Q&A date.

Please consider this is different from an annual phandom event and has no set deadline. Authors can decide to jump in any of the activities whenever they desire and we’ll try to provide the tools and support they need.

Additional Thoughts

If these last few months have allowed me to reflect on anything, it’s this:

Life happens. Don’t worry if some things have to be delayed or don’t go according to schedule, because other unexpected things can happen along the way.

It’s entirely okay to take your time or a break. It’s also important to note some authors/creators stop posting due to pressure (from others and their own) of fitting an update schedule, for example. When a beloved hobby feels like an obligation instead of something to enjoy, anyone can lose interest. So let’s also be understanding of creators and never pressure them to post something (there’s a difference between “I can’t wait for the next part!” to “please update!!!!”).

Incomplete can also be beautiful. Don’t worry if you didn’t finish that story. Sometimes posting a line from it out of context can be enough to let imaginations run wild with possibilities. Don’t worry if it’s not beta-ed or if it didn’t have the sequel you planned. Your words can be seeds to inspire more stories or headcanons to bloom. If you think the Wes Weston origin came from a kilometric (mile-long, for my US friends) thesis on background characters, you’d be surprised.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding. I’ll try to slowly update the Fic Rec list, share individual story updates, publish new Q&A dates, etc, etc.

Hey, sorry for the recent absence. After a rather hectic December at work (and at home with holiday preparations), I’m unfortunately down with covid since earlier this week (along with my husband and daughter, so it’s been quite the start of the year).

As most who’ve been through it or had someone close afflicted by it might know, rest is very important so I’ve been focusing on getting better and taking care of my family in the meantime.

I’m also giving this update for anyone who’s been waiting for news for the Half-Deadfic Project (@half-deadfic). I know you’ll understand the necessary hiatus, but I wanted to let everyone know what’s been going on.

Hey, everyone!

The Half-Deadfic Project looks to bring to life Danny Phantom stories that haven’t been updated in a while. This can be achieved with the author’s authorization by either promoting their next updates (for those still ongoing), sharing fanart of their works, and providing spaces for story discussion and even adoption.

One of the ways we want to connect these beloved authors to their readers is by creating a Q&A. Please read below the cut to learn about the guidelines, how to participate, and find the link for question submission.

Check our blog to learn more about the project overall and feel free to send us any questions.

About the Q&A

Readers can submit questions about the nominated story or the author’s writing process so that participating authors can answer. The answers will be posted when the author is ready to share on this blog in text format.

Question Submissions

You can submit questions only for any author that has a “Submit Q&A” link in our recommendation list [link] or authors listed in the monthly Q&A reminder.

Please consider this list will be updated as new authors confirm their participation, so stay tuned to that post.

General Guidelines

Please only submit questions. Comments with no questions won’t be posted in the Q&A.

We recommend keeping questions clear and concise.

Consider the status of the story as it’s listed in the blog to submit your questions (i.e. “will you continue the story?” or “when are you going to finish?” can be answered by the story’s status we share).

The project organizers will read and filter all the questions submitted before sending them to the authors. This will help us group repeated questions and make sure all questions fit the guidelines.

The author can decline to answer any question and will not be required to provide a reason.

Half-Deadfic Project: Danny Phantom Fic Recommendation List

Last Update: December 12, 2021

There are many incredible stories in the phandom and we’ve been honored to have fantastic authors giving us so much lovely content. We’ve made the following list based on a survey we launched a few months ago [originally shared here], from the love several phans showed to these unfinished works and authors.

This list has been classified according to the latest information we have from their authors or from the stories’ current updates. This will be updated as we finish gathering information from authors who wish to participate in this project with efforts to bring closure to their stories, but please consider not all authors are still around to reply and that the story status might be updated if the author decides.
