contemplating a fifth rewatch of hbo Chernobyl because it has such incredibly powerful political scenes critiquing the soviet regime while remaining so artful and concise
a lot of dedication and time went into making the series and a lot of emotion carries through the screen, but most of all, it's thought-provoking
it makes you wonder, makes you compare past and present, and it inspires you to resist.

so river monsters is actually a show about a biologist challanging/rationalising local myths about scary looking fish that drive their populations to the brink, and not just some charismatic guy showing off his fishing skills

oh my god the last season 2 scene is so much more gentle and less predatory (for lack of a better word, but anime Jinshi was really intense for no reason) in the original manga!!!
why would they ruin such a tender moment??? i knew it felt out of character!

a very 21st century look at JinMao's dynamic
dissclaimer: anime only + the show is very much set in patriarchical ancient pseudochina, but this rant ignores that fact for purposes of thinking through what's bothering me about the romantic plot as a 21st century woman
enjoyed The Apothecary Diaries immensly, love the characters and their arcs, the story and mistery part of it, but what irks me is the doubious consent every time Jinshi makes an advance towards Maomao. that's also why i have mixed feelings about the infamous frog scene.
Maomao feels like she relents, rather than consents, and this doesn't stop Jinshi, who i feel should be more mindful for someone he supposedly has affection and respect for; and that's not even mentioning his position of authority that he is usually very aware of.
i've gathered that Maomao is very oblivious when it comes to her being viewed romantically/sexually; but at the same time, her reaction every time Jinshi goes to kiss her is "do i kick him" at worst, and "he IS handsome" at best. (it's hillarious to me that the latter happens with only his new battle scar in frame, very Maomao)
the last episode of season 2 is probably the only positive reaction Maomao gives, and even then it's lukewarm when she lets him fall asleep in her lap despite her legs going numb.
all this to say, im very interessed if the light novels treat this dynamic the same way the anime did. whether it's just Maomao being unreadable and tough love (and Jinshi recognising this therefore deliberately making his approach more blunt/honest) oooor if Maomao isn't that into it at all, at least at first.
