#Repost ・・・ We are sad to announce the passing of Austin the llama over the weekend. At approximately age 107 (in llama years), Austin was the last of Hampshire’s guard llamas. In retirement, along with rams Buddy and Dodge, he greeted visitors to the farm for many years, serving as an unofficial “farm ambassador” to the broader community. @hampshirecollegefarm #hampshirecollege #RIP #hampshirecollegefarm (at Hampshire College)

Nicole DelRosso came to Hampshire to study sculpture. DelRosso had been accepted to an art school, but decided to go somewhere where she could also take classes in subjects she hadn’t yet fully explored. Six years later, she has won a Fulbright to work in a German lab building a nanoscale motor to work inside human cells.
For her project, DelRosso developed methods for performing computations on the genetic material of living cells, and helped to devise reusable and adaptable DNA computing systems. Professor Lee Spector said he learned a lot about DNA nanotechnology from DelRosso. “In meetings Nicole would give us dynamic presentations, and we would press her for details and explanations in terms that all of us could understand. This was hard,” he says, “these meetings were sessions in which Nicole was a teacher and each committee member played a dual role, of teacher in some areas and of student in others.”
Over the last six years, fourteen Hampshire College students and grads have won Fulbright Scholarships. Find out why by visiting us for an info session and campus tour! Our Admissions Office is open Monday through Saturday for prospective students and their families. Register now for your visit here.

“In 2014, we chose to fire the consultants and abandon the rankings race. And they’re probably just as surprised now to learn that three years later… we’ve improved our diversity, yield, and ability to meet financial need without sacrificing retention.”
In this essay in Inside higher Ed, Former Dean of Enrollment and Retention Meredith Twombly reflects on Hampshire’s journey towards renewing our commitment to a “mission-driven” admissions process three years ago.
Recognizing that Hampshire is “an uncommon college for an uncommon student,” we adopted an admissions practice that aligns with our institutional mission, attracting those students “with the maturity, curiosity, passion and compassion to thrive in a student-directed program.” We’re proud of all we have accomplished in the years since, and excited to continue working to honor our founding principles!
