We Welcome Cancy Chu - Our 1st Fulbright Scholar!
Candy Chu, a Ph.D. candidate from the Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation at the University of Melbourne, has joined our Heritage Science Research and Testing Lab for the 2022–2023 academic year.
Trained in conservation and book arts, Chu will be testing synthetic paper to further her research on the conservation of the material in cultural collections.
She hopes to determine the best methods for repair on damaged synthetic paper, which requires a different treatment than normal paper because of its plastic components. This research dovetails with her research on conservation of plastics found in paper-based collections.

فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا.إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
“Karena sesungguhnya sesudah kesulitan itu ada kemudahan. Sesungguhnya sesudah kesulitan itu ada kemudahan.” (QS. Alam Nasyroh: 5-6)
Alhamdulillah. Per May 20, 2023 the Spring semester finally end. I am more than grateful passing my first year here as a PhD student. In the past few months everything was up and down, and I was…
I’m on a Fulbright and I really like it but I do need to be honest and I feel like I’d be honest here. I’m in the UK and I am so blessed to have this opportunity to be here… But I feel just very isolated because they’re definitely is a gap in wealth and I’m feeling it and I’m also one of the only black women here. Just exhausting but it’s hard because you don’t wanna act like, you’re ungrateful because so many people would fight for this opportunity. But it’s just really a weird feeling 🫶🏿⭐️
Today marks three months in my new home, an island in the Indian Ocean! It has been a journey and a half getting here; visa delays, flight rebookings, and a whole lotta uncertainty. But upon arrival, I’ve found there’s no better place to learn the art of calm. Mauritius is the epitome of chill. Everything moves slower here, in a good way (well, mostly). It took me a month to open a bank account, two months to find friends, and three months to start my research, but who's counting days on the calendar when there’s so much sky to gaze up at? I live in a little coastal neighborhood called Flic en Flac, affectionately known amongst the locals as “Flic”. I walk everywhere mostly because I don’t have a car (yet), but also because there’s so much to observe along the way. Monkeys battling it out in the trees, coconuts, papayas, bananas, and mangoes dancing in the wind with the whole country as their stage. If you can’t tell, I like it here a lot. I’m staying for an additional six months on a research grant provided by the Fulbright Association. I’m studying women’s literacy, but research takes on a lot of forms. Like riding the bus to Cascavel Mall for the first time, or waiting in line for ten minutes in pursuit of a vegetable roti for $0.77 from a colorful stand (so worth it). I have a special customized journal with red and yellow flowers on it that I write in weekly, and I’m also filming a lot of my trip for my Fulbright-sponsored documentary, but I want to start a blog to share my lil experiences as they are happening. If you’re interested in seeing how a black girl from Philly learns how to kick it island style, stay tuned :)
asking for rec letters is harder than the whole 17-odd page application w two single spaced page-length essays ghghgh
have to remind myself these people genuinely care about me and want me to succeed and also it's only a massive imposition if I leave it to the last minute ghgarhghgkgjgh
like 'hi, we haven't talked for a year, would u like to do me a massive favor' which in all honesty i would TOTALLY do for someone if they asked me but it's amazing the double standards we apply to ourselves, isn't it?
After getting out of the hospital, I attended the Fulbright Austria Summerfest fundraiser. This is the fourth time that I've been able to attend this event. Not only am I a Fulbright Austria alumna, but this year, I have had the honor to be a member of the Fulbright Austria Alumni Advisory Panel. As a member of the panel, I've met a ton of other Fulbright Austria alumni from the US and Austria and from all different ages.
At this year's Summerfest, I was lucky enough to go with Katie, who is one of my longest and best friends in Austria. At the event, we ran into Abby, a grantee from my Fulbright year who studied the Viennese oboe, and Franzi, who was also from my grant year and studied musicology. I also ran into Judith, an Austrian grantee I know that studied and taught German in the US (and lived with my old roommate Hamda!)
My casts were like a beacon to every older person in attendence to make the same joke--which admittedly was a funny joke. Three or four people stopped me to ask, "Did you get in a fight with a dinosaur?" To which i would respond, "Yeah and unfortunately, I lost!" In situations like this one, it's nice to find a little humor.
The event was a smashing success. We heard stories from some of the first Fulbright alumni, reconnected with some other people I know and the Fulbright staff. Looking forward to continuing to attend this event for years to come.
