Trans People and Education

Education for queer and transgender individuals of any identity, whether it be kindergarten or graduate school, is always a tough call. Though it has gotten better in recent years, I must say that the issues people like me may face when it comes to college start from the very beginning of a person’s education. Bullying is not something that is just between peers, it can come from anyone in a student’s life at any time. It is not talked about enough how school staff are often renowned for being ruthless bullies towards transgender students due to their unresolved/internalized prejudice.

 Children in general thrive on positive reinforcement, and many trans kids are starved of this kind of approval from the day they come out and tell the world who they are. They are bullied into silence, left out of class discussion and expected to accept their role as below their cisgender classmates. This undoubtedly has an effect on their attitude towards education as a whole, and I have seen it first hand. Many people like me have lost hope. I know people who do not have a plan for their future because they didn’t even think that they would live long enough to graduate. It is almost impossible to focus on learning when you constantly have to keep your guard up and keep yourself safe from ridicule. They see school as a place full of judgemental eyes and negative feedback, and they often don’t even consider college as a possibility.

 Trans people are so frequently fed into a loop of self-doubt, laughed at for hoping that they may even live past the age of 35, let alone pursue further education. It only serves as proof that we as a society are in dire need of an overhaul in the resources we offer to trans people. If more people are presented support and reinforcement that they are worthy and deserving of a life past high school, if more schools take initiative to hear out their trans students when they speak up about the discrimination they face in their environment instead of stomping them out under the guise of “keeping the peace”, more trans people will be inspired to keep fighting and keep dreaming. 

Inspiration and passion begins with a safe, nurturing environment and many trans people have ended up doomed from the start solely because of the negligence of the people that are supposed to be looking out for us. I write this in the hopes of someone out there seeing it and feeling represented and heard. We are not below our cis peers. Our lives are worth the time of day. Though resources may currently be scarce for some, they are out there. It is possible to live the life you have always wanted and not have to leave your identity at the door. There are organizations that want you to succeed. We have a future in this world, and we will fight for it until we have it.
