how is darlingstern (ninth house) like darklina?

I talked about all this before here. It just feels like a very straightforward AU to me. But to basically repeat the stuff in that point: Ninth House is a rags to riches storyline where thee most angry and sullen girl ever is swept up into a corrupt but glamorous institution because of unheard of chosen one powers. There she’s taken under wing by a joyless, and arrogant mentor who is very angry about the whole thing because he had very specific ideas about what sort of person his pupil should be and she meets exactly none of those standards and is “ungrateful” for her super special powers to boot when he would kill to be able to have them himself. Also note his entire self destructive spiral because of his obsession with the past and legacy AND his real name representing youth and vulnerability for him when he’s reinvented a collected, aloof persona for himself under a new name that’s literally one letter and an added suffix removed from “Darkling” like be serious.

And then there’s “Alex Stern” vs “Alina Starkov” literally same initials and pretty much the same physical description. There was zero effort put into differentiating 😭😭

The baseline premise is practically the same, the story just progresses in a very different way.

It honestly annoys me tbh because like shdgfdsx Ninth House is genuinely very good! As a trauma narrative, I think it’s effective and competently executed. It’s up there for me with like Fire Walk With Me. And it’s so awkward being like… by the way it’s Shadow and Bone fanfiction…
