Reading: May Wrap Up and June TBR

May Wrap Up
I read 5 books in May. Yay!
The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johanssen. I gave this 4 stars on Goodreads, but 3.5 stars might be more fitting. I enjoyed it, but it was a little bit of a slow read for me. I think I just didn’t fully buy into the world. I found the POV switching to be a little clumsy, as well.
Geekerella by Ashley Poston. 4 stars. I had the ebook on hold on OverDrive and it came up while I was still reading Queen of the Tearling, so I started it right away since I was sort of trudging through the climax of the latter book. I thought this might be too silly for me but it! was! so! cute! I loved it! A very quick and fun read.
How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather. 2 stars. Horrible. D: This was my audiobook this month and the fact that it took most of the month to listen to says a lot. The only reason it isn’t 1 star is that the plot line wasn’t too badly constructed and the research was good. But the painfully obvious self insertion character, the bad romance plot lines, and the awful writing made a cool concept into a total drag. As someone who loves the city of Salem and whose ancestors were also caught up in the Witch Trials (I’m descended from an accused witch from the nearby town of Gloucester) it really irritated me to see this handled so badly.
This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab. 4 stars, but really 3.5 stars. I liked this book and enjoyed the characters, but I weird didn’t connect with them very strongly or care about the plot much. I was not as invested as I should have been. I had the same reaction when I read A Darker Shade of Magic by the same author. Not quite sure what it is about Schwab’s writing that causes this reaction in me, but I don’t hate it, so I will keep reading her stuff and see if it continues.
The Girl With All the Gifts by M. R. Carey. 4 stars. This was a unique zombie story. I enjoyed all of the characters, who were mainly satisfyingly complex. The ending left me a little sad and hopeless, but it was a logical place for the story to end up.

Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie (Imperial Radch #2) - I read Ancillary Justice last summer and it was a slow read but I loved it by the end. I’ve had the sequel on my shelf for awhile and I keep putting off reading it.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Listening to this on audiobook at the moment. Oh boy ... I can tell this is going to be a rocky one for me. I am enjoying the plot but the wafts of toxic masculinity, gate keeping, and other dumbĀ ā€œI’m a bigger nerd than you, GET REKTā€ shit is going to be a problem for me, I can already tell. I like Wil Wheaton’s narration, though. We will see.
Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. I bought this a month ago and have’t been able to start it yet. I’m looking forward to it.
Beyond the Red by Ava Jae. I own this in ebook format and the first few pages definitely caught my interest.
Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. I just bought this in paperback yesterday!Ā
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Reread - I’m halfway through the audiobook, but stopped because it was so heavy. I would like to finish it.Ā
Will I get through these books this month? Let’s find out!

About me
The run down:
- I’m in my early 30s
- Being an adult sucks
- I’m trying to write my first novel
- I’m a procrastinator and time management is hard for me
- I work full time and hate it (the whole concept, not my job in particular)
- I am always battling going into a reading slump, because I’m a much happier person when I read
