So cute 😍 I love it. I’m glad I found more and more of Chloe’s contents:)
Seahorses
✨Pairing: Jaynie/Chloe ✨Tags: date, aquarium, fluff, support, fish ✨Word count: 1367. Little warning: I am not a native English speaker & I don't particularly like to use GenAI to translate my writing, so please cut me some slack if you find any translation errors🙏🏻 (I've reeeeeally done my best with it.)

“I’d like us to go on a date somewhere,” says Jainey while rolling around with a book on Chloe’s bed. It sounds like it comes out of nowhere.
“Where to?”
That’s just how Chloe is — honest, always speaking her mind, without tiptoeing. When anyone else would have have shrugged, said “sure” and would have forgotten the discussion for another week or so, she goes straight into planning mode. That’s just how Chloe is — and Jaynie is madly in love with her.
She starts to understand Chloe more and more, even though there were times it wasn’t always evident for her. During her second year she even takes a course on neurodivergence — a freshly baked course for Kearney. She’s the first one to get into the program. When Chloe finds out, she is out of words — and yet Jaynie gets it without a single word spoken.
“I thought about going to an aquarium,” she says. “There is a flyer here that says they have a ticket discount for couples this weekend.”
Chloe frowns a little.
“I already told you that you don’t have to constantly spare money. I can take you on whatever date you want to go. Any day.”
Jaynie shakes her head. She gets up from the bed and approaches Chloe reaching for a hug. Chloe reaches out back, falling into her arms easily.
“You’re spoiling me.” Jainey laughs with her face hidden in Chloe’s shoulder. “But I do wanna take my very best journalist in the world on a date myself.”
They go to the aquarium on Saturday after lunch, just after Jaynie honestly finishes half of her assignments and essays. After their chaotic and difficult first university year, Chloe makes sure Jaynie doesn’t sacrifice studying neither for dates and for visiting Gran and Carter nor for some weird investigations of her own. Chloe makes a planning for her — she’s definitely great at it! — that makes her life significantly easier. She does it without Jainey even having to ask. In the end, no sacrifices even have to be made (if one, of course, doesn’t consider the fact that Chloe absolutely could not be convinced that brushing teeth does not necessarily have to take place at 8:28 AM, a sacrifice).
After they show tickets at the entrance, Jaynie notices Chloe staring around slightly nervously.
“They don’t do the animal shows.” She slightly squeezes her girlfriend’s palm. “I looked it up. I knew it would be important to you.”
“I… I…” Chloe smiles awkwardly. “Thank you.”
“Why didn’t you say something though?”
“You wanted to be here. I did not want to disappoint you.”
Jaynie is not the one to cry easily. She probably has already cried out her whole tear storage a long time ago, while worrying abound Carter. But Chloe caring this much to let go of her principles even for a little bit gives her a stinging feeling in her eyes.
“We both prioritized one another’s feelings,” Chloe says outloud what Jaynie has been thinking. “I love you”.
These words leave her lips so effortlessly, like they don’t carry any weight at all. And yet there were times when Jaynie was afraid of using them, afraid of scaring away their fragile happiness, their tiny source of stability in this scary, cruel world.
“Love you too. Let’s go.”
They enter the first room. Jaynie freezes for a moment.
“It’s beautiful,” Chloe states the evident after letting her girlfriend adjust for a moment. “What fish do you want to see first?”
In fact, Jaynie came prepared. She’s read some really smart book about fish and found a dozen articles about fun fish facts. And yet, every possible thought leaves her head when she sees Chloe nearly sticking her nose into the glass.
“You’re the prettiest fish in this room,” Jaynie says while smiling temptingly.
“No, you are.” Chloe laughs. “But if we are serious about it, then I would pick mandarinfish, they are so beautiful. So colourful!”
“Yeah, I remember.” Jaynie nods and teases her a bit. “Multi-coloured is the prettiest colour on Earth, Jaynie.”
“Yes, it is,” Chloe confirms very seriously. “But to be fair, they might not have mandarinfish in this room and then you are still the prettiest fish here.”
Jaynie could have said that — to be completely fair! — she is definitely not a fish. However, then she remembers that they already had a similar conversation about the most beautiful frog on Earth. Jaynie had a nerve to tell Chloe she is absolutely not an amphibian and was lectured by her that from the evolutionary point of view, they’re both fish and amphibians. It is absolutely impossible to outwit Chloe. Sometimes Jaynie thinks her girlfriend knows every single thing on Earth. Except for, maybe, social interaction rules, but even then, she studied them from an academical perspective, dissected them like a biologist.
Even now, Chloe walks around hand in hand with Jaynie, from one exposition room to another and says the name of each fish outloud, has a weird fact to share about many of them — and this without even prying into the explanatory cards.
“Oceanology also was my special interest for a while,” she explains when Jaynie shows surprise. “It was not for a long time and it was quite a while ago, so I don’t remember a lot. My dad made sure I was taken to aquariums, like, every week.”
Chloe’s shoulders go down a bit, like always when she talks about her childhood and especially her dad. Jaynie gives her a gentle hug. She wants to tell her so many things. “You’re allowed to be sad.” “You did the right thing.” “No matter how hard it is, I’ll always be there for you.” Yet, she knows that Chloe knows every single thing she can tell her. That’s why she just squeezes her shoulder a little harder.
“Sometimes I’m really surprised you didn’t become a biologist with all those special interests of yours.”
“Didn’t I tell you?” Chloe becomes more vivid in an instance. She is obviously grateful for the fact that Jaynie hasn’t drawn too much attention to a difficult moment.
“You did. But I’m still surprised.”
“Hey, look, the seahorses.” Chloe’s eyes light up.
“They’re fish too though.” Jaynie sees it as an opportunity to use the knowledge she obtained from that very smart book.
“Yes! I used to kin them.”
“You used to what?” asks Jaynie while trying to remember where could she have heard this word — has she even ever heard this word?
“Kin. I mean I thought we were pretty much alike. Mainly due to the fact we were both weird. They were weird fish. I was a weird human being.”
“Not at all, you’re not…” Jaynie tries to object but Chloe slightly presses her finger on her lips.
“I do not think being weird is all that bad anymore. Surely, for a while it did hurt a bit. Last year it did hurt a lot. But I am who I am and I found my place in the world. At Kearney. Together with you. And I am happy, Jaynie. You get it, don’t you?”
Jaynie gets it. She is also the way she is after everything that happened to her. She is also happy — being at Kearney and with Chloe.
Meanwhile, her girlfriend is already pulling her to another room, to a huge aquarium with medusas. Chloe watches them with big eyes, standing on her tiptoes and clapping her hands in excitement. Still on tiptoes, she walks around the aquarium. Chloe watches the medusas — and Jaynie watches Chloe. She watches her and she can’t get enough of her. Even on the distorted image Jaynie sees through the glass and the thick layer of water, she is still so incredibly pretty.
When Chloe comes back, Jaynie takes her by hand, facing her.
“You know, I gave it a thought and I also “kin” seahorses.”
“Because you are weird too?”
“I’m sure it wouldn’t take anyone by surprise,” Jaynie says. “But no.”
She bows slightly, leaning towards Chloe’s ear.
“Because many of their subspecies mate for life. And you know what?” Jaynie stops for a second, allowing Chloe to process her words. “I think I do too.”
______ This fic is part of the series I am doing for pride month, though it is the first one to be translated into English. At the moment there are fics on Vyxaria/Cynthia, Vesper/Nova, Theodora/Charlotte and Onyx/Nova. If you liked this one and want any of those translated as well, let me know & I'll try my best🩵

⠀───୨Frog on d4ৎ───
Tumblr media
⠀⠀⠀⋆⭒˚.⋆🪐 ⋆⭒˚.⋆ Jaynie/Chloe ⋆⭒˚.⋆🪐 ⋆⭒˚.⋆
ᥫ᭡. tags: tenderness, fluff, board games, pajamas, frogs, kisses, hugs, supporting
The story within the story is inspired by the blurb of the book “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder”. The plot development is random, no spoilers (I haven't even read the book).
A loud sneeze breaks the ringing silence of the library.
Jaynie glances around, checking if she’s disturbed anyone. “I think I’ve developed a dust allergy. We’ve been holed up here for days.” “Shhh!” Chloe hisses, whipping around so fast she nearly knocks her head against the bookshelf. Luckily, Jaynie reacts in time and cups the back of Chloe’s head with her palm.
Now they’re standing close. So close.
“So, you’re saying you don’t like it here?” “This part,” Jaynie leans in and places a feather-light kiss on the corner of Chloe’s lips, “I like very much.”
Chloe’s breath catches for just a second, but her focused expression returns. “Jaynie, you’re distracting me. Look! I found it!” “Does that mean we can finally go home?” “Don’t be such a bore. I refuse to believe you’re not even a little curious to play.” “I am curious, but come on, it’s cold and damp in here. Let’s stop by the coffee shop downstairs. They’ve got fresh desserts and hazelnut coffee…”
Jaynie makes another attempt to lure Chloe into a kiss.
“You really do love flustering me,” Chloe sighs. “Alright, fine. Now I want coffee too.” She starts packing her things. “But tonight, we’re coming back to it. Don’t forget your pajamas. We can’t have a pajama party without pajamas.”
The mysterious “it” is now in Chloe’s hands: an old, dusty board game no one on campus had mentioned in at least thirty years. While working on a homework, Chloe had gone through stacks of ancient yearbooks and stumbled across a reference to a game called “Ghosts of the Past”. After that, it was all a blur. Chloe became obsessed with finding the box, and Jaynie had no choice but to help her brilliant, beautiful researcher dig through decades of forgotten clutter.
And finally, after a week of shifting paper from one box to another, luck smiled on them. Though Jaynie still wasn’t sure whether she wanted to celebrate or smack the campus librarian with the thing for being so unhelpful.
“Jaynie, are you listening?” Chloe snaps her back to reality. “You were staring at something so intently...” “Sorry, just thinking. I’m listening. Or I was, up until ‘the hardest game you’ve ever heard of.’” “Yes! I can’t wait to open it. Just don’t be late tonight. I might explode from curiosity!”
That’s Chloe. Whether it’s frogs or some obscure board game, when she’s in, she’s all in.
“I’ll do my best. Just need to finish my homework.” “If you don’t, I’ll help. You know that.” “I do. And I appreciate it.”
Jaynie kisses Chloe’s palm, flustering her again. Which only makes Jaynie do it again.
𓍯𓂃
That evening, room is fully transformed for an immersive “Ghosts of the Past” night.
Fairy lights and candles cast a warm glow. Thermoses of coffee sit waiting. Chloe, in her favorite frog pajamas, sits on the bed, staring down the game box like it might bite.
“Looks like we’re channeling very different vibes tonight,” Jaynie teases, pulling out an outfit that could only generously be called sleepwear – corset illusion, lace, sheer robe. “We look like mother and child.”
“I don’t know,” Chloe shrugs. “You look beautiful. Soft. Just… be comfortable, alright? If you’re cold, grab a blanket.”
Jaynie smiles warmly and changes. Now, everything is ready.
“Alright, show me what this is.” She hops on the bed, then immediately hops off again – pulling out a small frog-shaped hair clip. “Look what I found. This is my token. Frog on a d4!”
“Jaynie, it’s not chess. What do you need a d4 for?” Chloe pulls out a worn cardboard with spaces marked for gameplay. “You can “jump” her across the board if you want, sure.”
They spend a few minutes reading the rules. The story begins:
“Five years ago, Lucy – the school’s golden girl – was murdered by her boyfriend. He confessed and took his own life. Case closed. The town believes the story. But what if that’s not the truth? Play to find out what really happened to Lucy.”
“Yeesh. You really love the dark stuff. Murder…” “Aren’t you intrigued?” Chloe’s eyes shine with excitement. “We have to figure it out.”
“Oh, we will. You’ll solve it in five minutes flat – my brilliant girl.”
Jaynie watches fondly as Chloe explains the rules.
“The board’s filled with witnesses – friends, family, classmates. To speak to each one, we have to answer personal questions. Honestly. That’s the key. Lie, and we might miss something. We face ghosts of the past… and beat them. Ready?”
“You go first.”
Jaynie finds it all a bit too naive. Who’s going to know if you lie? And why not just peek at the ending? Surely others did and never admitted it. Still Chloe cares. That’s what matters. So tonight, Jaynie will play. She’ll answer every silly question.
Chloe moves her token to the first square and picks a card. “What’s your favorite color? Varicoloured! This is easier than I thought. Your turn!”
“Chloe, varicoloured’s not a color.” “My answer stands. How am I supposed to pick just one? What color is my flower dress, huh?”
“Fine, varicoloured it is.”
“You’re up!” Chloe’s practically vibrating with anticipation.
“Wait, aren’t you supposed to read what your witness said?”
“Oh, right!” Chloe flips another card. “Lucy’s parents. Still grieving. Can’t believe what happened. But… no useful info.”
“Well, yeah. Parents don’t get told anything. We need to reach the friends. They always know more.”
Jaynie moves her frog forward and reads her card. “Most embarrassing moment of your life? Ugh… who answers that?”
Chloe gives her that look. The one Jaynie can’t say no to.
“Fine. For the case. I was about ten. Class trip to a museum. It went great until the ride back. I got carsick and… threw up on a man’s shoes. He yelled. Everyone stared. I wanted to vanish.”
“My poor Jaynie! And your teacher just did nothing?”
“It wasn’t a school bus. I was on my own.”
Chloe leaps up, nearly knocking over the board, and hugs her like the world’s fiercest protector. “If I had been there, I’d have yelled right back! How dare he shout at a child!”
Jaynie laughs, but then… exhales something she didn’t realize she was holding. “You know… I’ve never told anyone that. Not even Gran. Or Carter. Especially not Carter – he’d never let it go. But telling you… It helped. That little Jaynie inside me feels better now. Thank you.”
Chloe kisses her forehead. “See? Maybe it’s not such a silly game after all.”
“Maybe just a tiny bit,” Jaynie teases. They both laugh.
“Now let’s see what your witness has to say.”
“Lucy’s friend. She’s jumpy, doesn’t want to talk. Says she knows nothing, just tired. I get it – it’s not exactly light conversation. But still… she had to notice something. Oh well. Your turn.”
They move on: classmates, teachers, Lucy’s boyfriend’s friends, even a woman from the animal shelter Lucy volunteered at. No new leads. But with every question, the girls open little pieces of themselves: childhood dreams, first loves, awkward dates, family fights, biggest regrets, wild hopes.
The game becomes something much more intimate.
“We’ve talked to everyone, and we’re no closer to the truth,” Chloe sighs. “Classmates saw her fighting with her boyfriend. His friends say he was tense. Maybe the official story is true.”
“We didn’t waste our time,” Jaynie says gently. “Now I know how vengeful you can be. And you know what to use as leverage against me.”
“I’d never!” Chloe mock-punches her arm. “Unless you give me a reason.”
They sit in silence, trying to piece it together.
“Flip it!” Chloe suddenly exclaims. “Flip it over!”
“What?”
“Look – take the first letter of every witness name. It spells FLIP IT!”
“You’re a genius. You really should be a detective. Though, I guess journalism works too.”
With reverence, Chloe flips the game board. Faint text appears, so small she needs candlelight to read it.
“Congratulations! You’re one step away from the truth. Now, face the final Ghost. Stand before a mirror and confess your greatest fear. Loud, clear, and honest. Only then can you speak to the key witness. Their message is hidden inside the box. Good luck.”
They look at each other. Then Chloe stands, walking to the full-length mirror. Janie follows, resting her chin on Chloe’s shoulder from behind.
Chloe inhales deeply. “I’m afraid… I’m most afraid of…” She trails off. Tears spill silently down her face.
Jaynie gently turns her around.
“You don’t have to do this. It’s just a game. We can skip to the end. No one’s watching.”
She wipes Chloe’s cheeks and rubs her back.
“No,” Chloe says. “I want to.”
She turns again to the mirror.
“My biggest fear is… being myself. I spent my life trying to be what my father expected. I wear masks. It's hard to show people the real me. I'm terrified they’ll reject it. But with you… you saw my frogs and didn’t think I was crazy. You learned everything about my family – everything – and stayed. You stood by me in court. With you, I feel real. I don’t have to pretend. And you’re here, playing this stupid game you don’t even like.”
She’s crying again. But this time, it’s relief.
Jaynie cries too.
“I do it because I want to. You’re the most brilliant girl I’ve ever met. And I’ll never stop saying that. Thank you for trusting me. That means everything.”
“I love you, Jaynie. I love you so much.”
She turns, whispers it again, and kisses her – softly, desperately, like it’s the first or last time.
“I love you too,” Jaynie breathes back. “So, so much.”
They stay like that. Quiet, wrapped in each other. Souls talking, without a word.
Then Jaynie breaks the silence. She smooths a curl from Chloe’s forehead and glances toward the bed.
“So, Detective Chloe… shall we finally solve this thing?”
“Let’s do this.”
They discover a false bottom in the box. Chloe cuts it open and unfolds a note.
“What does it say?”
“The final witness… it’s Lucy’s friend again. Turns out, it was their teacher. The one we spoke to. He had an affair with Lucy, then dumped her. She threatened him with photos. He panicked… and killed her.”
“What about the boyfriend?”
“He and Lucy were best friends. They pretended to date so no one would suspect he was gay. He knew about the teacher but couldn’t stop it. He couldn’t save her.”
“So why he confess?”
“The teacher threatened the friend too. Said if he didn’t take the blame, Lucy’s friend would be next. So he sacrificed himself to protect her.”
“Dramatic,” Jaynie whispers. “That could be a whole novel.”
𓍯𓂃
They meet the morning from the rooftop.
A blanket, a thermos, and arms wrapped around each other beneath a blushing sky.
As dawn paints the clouds pink, Jaynie speaks quietly.
“I’m scared I won’t save Carter.”
“Huh?” Chloe blinks at her, startled.
“You told me your fear. This is mine. I’m scared he’ll push things too far. That one day it’ll happen, and I won’t be able to stop it.”
“Janie… it’s not your fault. You’re an amazing sister. You’ve done everything you could.”
“I know. But it still scares me.”
“If he wants help, we’ll find it. We’ll make it work. You’ll see. You believe that?”
“I do. I believe you. Thanks… for being here in all this chaos.”
“This chaos brought us together. Imagine we might never have met.”
“Don’t say that. That’s not how life works. Come on, let’s go to bed. You’re sleepwalking. Sleeping here is not a good idea.”
“I don't mind.”
“You’ll tell your doctor later.”
Chloe laughs as Jaynie helps her to her up.
𓍯𓂃
They fall asleep tangled together, like they’ve done a hundred times.
Jaynie pinned down Chloe’s curls when she stirs – one of her new little habits.
The frog clip lies forgotten on the floor.
Someone’s bound to step on it in the morning.
C’est La Vie.
