I’ll be real, I’m generally not as into insomniac because to me it can feel like they, for lack of a better term, took a lot of the Spice out of characters I normally like so it can personally feel kinda boring and they structure their supporting cast in a way that’s just not my personal taste and have also developed a bad habit of using Miles as nothing but a vehicle to progress Peter’s character arc. However, I can say that I have very much enjoyed covetphantom7 on ao3’s works.

I’m probably on an opposite end of the spectrum for you because I am a lesbian rather than aroace. When it comes to him, while analyzing him as an aroace man struggling with the expectations that come with both toxic masculinity and allonormativity or Harry as a gay man struggling with comphet and internalized homophobia is probably a post I could and should write. Broadly I’m just like yeah this guy doesn’t like women. His feelings about men are variable depending on how i feel.

This is similar to me headcanoning him as both a trans man and as an egg in that like. I often think actively contradictory headcanons into existence because of the aforementioned overly academic ways I tend to look at queer headcanoning. Calling some fictional character queer is a form of analysis, actually, in a way many headcanons tend to be to me. I fear sounding pretentious because like. Nobody has to think like this and I’m aware it’s like, writer brainrot.

The broad conclusion is that Harry is queer but how he’s queer is incomprehensible by the human mind.

I jest, I think it was more complex than that. As it is for most queer people. I don’t see him being the sort of child who watched much tv or was allowed to play many video games as a kid save for maybe playing games with Peter at his house. Regardless of that I find myself wanting to say Shadow The Hedgehog for shits and giggles. When it comes to people, most of Harry’s social life prior to Peter isn’t really shown and I think there are a couple points in the novels where Peter David my beloved implies Harry didn’t have much of one outside of what you can sort of expect from teenagers when they see a rich kid. Less genuine friendships more transactional. So I do think the first real life man he was crushing on was likely Peter, or maybe we get into celebrities at which point Ill be more compelled to push for like, my favorite white boy Beck than any 90’s heartthrob because you’d get more similar features to the people he expresses attraction towards.

Absolutely agree tho. I think one of the most interesting parts of MJ and relationships that I’m very eager to explore in certain fics is that her commitment issues originate from being abused as a child and it seems like her habits are her entering whatever relationship makes her feel safest. Harry is wealthy and initially seems to understand her issues with her father, Peter can quite literally protect her from things that harm her, John is stable and normal, and then when Peter is no longer the emotional anchor she first liked him for, she goes back to Harry because in those moments he’s able to express more of the emotional intelligence she needs. I think she destroys relationships also in part because she’s traumatized into thinking that the other shoe will inevitably drop so she wants to destroy things so she can be in control of how they fall apart. I don’t think being with another woman would completely eliminate this and I’m looking forward to writing about that difference.

Also I like Gwen and MJ because I am a lesbian and something about the way the scene where she was trying to apologize to MJ was framed with MJ on the stage above her made me feel a type of way. Who said that.

In general I’m more inclined to think Harry was either gay or aroace because his attraction to women in the raimiverse is very, very comphet to me. I know when I was younger half the time the people I chose as my “crush” were people my friends had crushes on because then I knew they fit the standards of what was seen as attractive. The other half of the time I arbitrarily chose people I was friends with. And when you dig deeper into it, it continues to feel kinda dubious. As far as I can tell, people think raimi Harry was a playboy because of some weird James Franco Mandela effect and because the way he began dating MJ reads poorly to people. He likes to say things that imply he goes out a lot, but we have tons of chances for the movies to show him doing that where he doesn’t. They could have shown him with random women at the party he slaps Peter or implied he was using sex to cope, but they don’t. And his relationship with MJ was pretty obviously mostly focused on what it would do for him rather than feelings, giving this sort of general vibe of like… this is what he thinks he should do, not what he wants to do. He’s pleading his father and his father’s standards for masculinity, not as much doing it because he likes her. And then when they’re broken up, he seems to be pretty over it pretty quickly and they’re friends again by the second movie. He says a lot of things about her, but he never does much to imply he’s being honest. And when a character says something but never acts to support it, that’s an area I feel personally allowed for questioning and interpretation.

I think I’ve personally developed a perspective on queer readings very influenced by a stint of my life in which my primary spintrest was Irish mythology. Most online “fandom” for that skews pretty academic, meaning queer ideas aren’t so much fitting that term exactly but more examining how a character doesn’t fit the typical standards of gender or sexuality. As interesting as Peter is to this conversation, I also find it a little fascinating that Harry expresses so little attraction to women beyond what he says and what he does to accomplish unrelated goals. He’d still read as queer to me regardless of Peter, that’s one of the reasons “Harry is gay or aroace” is such a thing for me.

all goofing aside I genuinely don't understand the urge to reimagine Taylor Allison Swift as a secretly queer icon when the pop music scene(TM) is like. literally overflowing with women who actually like women.
