Research - Social Anxiety in children

Apparently, in Australia, 1-9 % of children suffer from social anxiety with makes making friends at a young age more difficult. This may be caused by living with family members with Social Anxiety, a traumatic social event or being shyer than other children.

We decided that the Instagram page was a bit superficial, instead we will be printing out the 12 pages of photos putting them on the ground and having the stories play as you walk over their respective photos

Concept Statement (Project 2)

This work is based on the topic of Glitch. Continuing from my third project last semester which was a video-based, in which coloured lines and shapes would move and change colour with the different frequencies of the music. This work examines the physical representation of music.

In this installation, there is a set of speakers that play bass heavy music. Atop of the subwoofer is coloured popcorn which is meant to visually represent the music. At the beginning of the song the popcorn barely moves, as the song goes on and becomes more intense the popcorn begins to jump around in a colourful frenzy. As the music plays you’re also able to physically feel the pounding of the beat which makes the viewer feel more part of the installation.

Originally, the work was meant to include a series of self-made sound effects generated by using sounds in my daily life that I thought were particularly basey. These sounds included aircon rumble, stomping, etc. On top of that, I also used a Text to Speech robot to speak out different phrases, during this experimentation, the voice malfunctioned out and all that came out was this nonsense which was quite interesting. From there I slowed down and lowered the pitch of all the sounds to increase the base. However, while playing the sounds on the speaker I didn’t notice much movement from the popcorn so I decided to scrap the sounds using instead the EDM music with has a lot of consistent bass.

If I was to continue with this experimentation I would attempt to find ways to increase the base of my self-created sounds as they were more interesting than just using music. Perhaps also finding a much bigger and deeper speaker so I could have more popcorn flying around (also so it doesn’t fall out).

Played the sound effects I'd made but they didn't produce the visual effects I'd hoped for. So I moved to EDM.

I started by collecting some sound effects - An air-con,, some tone and a recording of a text to speech robot saying WWWWWWWWHAAAAAAATTTTT IIIIIIISSSSSS IIIIIIITTTTTT.

Interestingly the text the voice recording glitched out at it resulted in it making weird noises.

I took those sounds, put them into Adobe Audition, lowered the pitch and slowed the pitch to increase the base level and combined them. This is what it sounds like...
