No one is discrediting the student protests. I myself am a student who is partaking in largely student-coordinated protests, drives, campaigns… but I also understand that we are largely missing the point if coverage of these protests overshadows what they are actually protesting for—the atrocities committed on Palestinians every single day. As the western buzz around this genocide gets more and more coverage, the coverage of the genocide itself sharply declines. It’s true and I see it every single day. Things are not being reported with the precision and diligence with which they should be.

I never take people seriously when they somehow claim or imply that Ivy League kids are particularly shielded against state or police violence as a Class rather than acknowledging that even within higher education there are strata of privilege. The college students protesting at Ivy League schools (and other campuses) are not safe. It is a privilege to be at the school and they use their privilege to bring attention to the genocide in Gaza, but the students are not safe. In my experience, overwhelmingly the students who actually physically protest against their universities' actions are students of color, of a lower socioeconomic class, Jewish, disabled, LGBT, and mad/mentally ill. Wealthy legacy students are not the ones with their feet to the pavement. That's a fantasy.
I've watched Ivy League deans with my own two eyes forcibly hospitalize psychotic students who were NOT a danger to anyone, and I've heard of campus police physically harming mentally ill students while restraining them. Campus cops protect rapists. They hurt women. They target Black students. They targeted a Black Jewish staff member at my university Hillel because he was Black. They let the walls of our houses be spray painted with swastikas. They let Christian fascists harass our students body. They don't care that it's the Ivy League and that the students and staff "should" be shielded from violence. Why should they? This is their power fantasy. The cops are tools of white supremacy and capitalism. So are the universities they serve. Palestinian liberation is a threat to the American empire--so the universities see these student protests as a threat to their livelihoods. It is at a genuine risk to their personal safety (not to mention their education and finances) that these students protest. They will lobby, and barricade, and hunger strike, and educate, and chant, and protest, and they will get injured and arrested. And at the end of all of this, Palestine will be free 🇵🇸

And the honey, above all, like condensed light. How greedy we are for the little bowl of pale translucent stuff. It’s full of white specks, as if whipped with milk. Sun through the blinds, so brilliant my hand disappears when passing through it, transformed into a phantom hand, while the glass bowl of honey gives off sudden fire, like a diadem, like a ring of Ulugh Beg’s stars, like the Great Comet of 1882. […] Eating this honey requires everything of you. I think of the Sufi philosophers who compared spiritual experience to the taste of honey. Honey is sweet and sugar is sweet, but their tastes are not the same. Is it possible to explain the difference in words? No: you can only know the taste of honey with your body. And only through feeling can you know the taste of love.
