Huge thank you to @piescrossstitch, who did this first and told me where to find the pattern for it. I just added beads to the mix because why not. It glows when you add a tea light inside, too!
EDIT: Pattern is from the September 2021 "Cross Stitcher Magazine", issue 374. I found a scan of it here.

My mom spent like four months embroidering this on and off. She asked me to post it for her here! It's her first time making fanart, and also kind of her first time embroidering anything? I'll read any comments I get out to her.

As someone new to blackwork, do you have any tips for making patterns? Are there typical/traditional shapes and motifs? Or is it more of a vibe?
Hi Anon!
There are collections of motifs out there, but I don't really use any of them. A lot of my patterns are repetitive fills in an outlined space, so my usual method is to work out the shape of the outline, then play around in a sketchbook or design app until I come up with fills I like. There are definitely elements in those fills that I keep coming back to, and elements in my designs that overlap with other designers, simply because we're all drawing on a grid and there are certain stitch combinations that fit together well.
For example, this shape and variations on it pop up a lot in my and others' designs because it's simple and tiles well, but I'm not reaching into a motif bank for it; it just comes out of my doodles.

I'm afraid I don't have a tried and true set of design steps here; it really is more of a vibe for me, and the more I do it, the more of a sense I get of what will look good (and what will make for a pleasant, easy-flowing stitching experience, because those aren't always the same thing).

I’m making a messenger bag and I had the bright idea to embroider something on the front flap.
Two problems with that: I have no plan for what design I want to go for, and I haven’t embroidered anything other than cross-stitch in years.
So I drew a simple Silent Princess on some scraps from the bag fabric to see if I still remember how to do it. Six or seven hours later, this was the result, and I’m pretty happy with it.

This is an idea I've been playing around with for awhile, and I finally worked out a design I'm happy with. The outer fill patterns combine where their sections overlap, and the resulting patterns are more intricate than their component motifs would suggest. Blackwork embroidery on blue 14-count Aida cloth.
Pattern here (my site) or here (Etsy).

I kind of think of this one as a companion to my 'Fuck the cistem' piece, and also belatedly pretty perfect for Transgender Day of Visibility.
I was not made to be invisible.

This one was an experiment:
Tumblr media
It came out half good, half bad, want to know why?
That's why:
Tumblr media
Practically invisible on the background 🫣 guess the lesson here is DON'T RUSH using just the colours you have at hand, make sure they will actually stand out 🤷🏻‍♀️
Still, the real experiment part was to see if Aida 18ct is valid for denim stitching with double thread. It obviously is, although it's so tiny I had to use sharp needle again to be able to stitch through (also the quality of Aida I purchased for this is... Not as perfect as the previous one and removing it was a pain because it's STIFF AF).

Given that the pattern here (and more of those to come) is pretty sparse, with lots of empty squares between stitches, I'll be trying 14ct with quadruple thread. And more vivid colours this time xD
