Why do you think DC chose Catwoman to be Helena Wayne’s mother in the Bronze Age when Catwoman was banned from comics in the era before that?
She was just THE obvious choice tbh. Sure you could use someone like Linda Page, Julie Madison, Vicki Vale or any other, but the only one people would have been hype for was Catwoman, the other side of Batman’s coin, the “Empress of the Underworld” “Princess of Plunder” and “Queen of Crime” was exciting and beautiful, but also clearly more complicated than “Villainess” as even at her worst she hated hurting innocents.
Selina was an interesting complicated and layered character while the others were static, made to be pretty arm candy for the main guy while being wholly unimportant to the main story. One of the reasons her character was in trouble with the comics code was because she made crime look too fun, was always getting away with it, and was flirting with the main character DESPITE being a criminal. So of course the answer was to reform her, (which was already something that was happening with Selina in the Golden Age, who wanted to quit stealing and run a pet shop), and then kill her off (in E2) so she gets both a happy ending and a convenient way of being written out of the narrative, plus a tragic backstory for her daughter.
Also, even in the 60s, people wanted Batmarriage! and there was ONE real contender
Fun Fact: it was Fredric Wertham, dude who wrote “seduction of the innocent”, who of course got her blacklisted by singling her out, saying Catwoman was emblematic of comic books having no “decent” women, and that Catwoman’s signature whip had homosexual implications.
As ridiculous as that is, it was enough for Dc to play it safe with Catwoman for the next 12 years. But it’s a comfort to know that Fredric would want to kill himself over Selina’s modern day appearance and characterization which has FAR outlasted him 🖤 also here’s the 90s comics shading him lol
