Final

Most Favorite And Least Favorite

My most favorite one is the Wikipedia.

I love this technology is because it is useful when I need to write a paper. It is easy to find the definition of a term and it helps you to find many reference page that you can use in your paper. I use Wikipedia everyday when I want to search for anything new and want to know about it.

My least favorite one is Reddit. 

I hate this technology because it has a text base website that is difficult to use and I do not like the Karma system and the anti-cheating system which prevents me from commenting. It asked me to comment every 10 minutes which is very annoying.

Mashup Idea

My idea is to combine google map with a list of clothes and shoes. I will use Google map,and Instagram, Twitter. Google map for map, Instagram for clothing photos, Twitter for reviews. When people are looking for a specific clothes/shoes, they can click into those Instagram photos and find out which store is selling that clothes, the price of that clothes and the location of the nearest store will be showed on the map. Also they can find the reviews below the picture of that clothing. This is very useful for people who want to buy a specific clothes but do not know where to buy it. It helps people to save their time for looking for that clothes or shoes.

Twitter’s Impact

Twitter has impacts on society through many aspect such as News, Entertainment, Politics, and Corporations.

First of all, Twitter has enormous impact on News. Twitter trending hashtag and reaction from Twitter about specific news would become a headline news in newspaper. People are paying attention to what is going on in Twitter. People are used to post their thoughts and feelings about some news in Twitter with special hashtag, and such trending hashtag would become a mainstream in social media platform.

Secondly, Twitter has significant influence on Entertainment field. Many movie stars and singers are using Twitter to connect with their fans and to promote their movies and songs. They would upload their music video or movie trailer to Twitter and then their fans would retweet those posts and it would become more and more popular in Twitter. Also, if there is a very popular movie or songs, people will voluntarily retweet those posts and post hashtag about them to express their love or hate about them. Moreover, some interesting TV shows’ screenshots become memes in Twitter which would lead to a boost of followers of that TV show. The use of Twitter enhances people’s experience with Entertainment industry since now people can directly connect with their idols in Twitter and feel and experience their idols’ daily lives.

 Thirdly, Twitter is a useful tool for corporation to communicate with its customers and build relationships with them. However, it is also a place where it’s incredibly easy to fail if they don’t treat it well since marketing campaigns can blow up in a hurry, hashtags can be hijacked, attempts at humor can backfire and misuse of the medium can invoke outrage. Companies have to deal with Twitter with care and each tweet they send out can make enormous impact on them.

 Fourthly, since Trump is used to send out political information in Twitter, Twitter now has political impact on international society. People can gain many information about United State’s president in Twitter now.

 Fifthly, I do not use Twitter in my real life because it is difficult to use and its dashboard is not simple and easy to use. I have a better choice of social media which is a new star in China called Weibo, which is much easier to use and it has lots of functions.

 Sixthly, I do not think that Twitter will continue to have an impact on society over the next 5 years because the number of Twitter users is dramatically decreasing throughout these years. Twitter never upgrade their website and UI design for a better user experience and such action would cause the decrease of users in the next 5 years. Many users have to use extensions and add-up tools to manage their Twitter accounts because it is difficult and confusing for them to manage their account in Twitter and Twitter does not provide some of those functions. As the social media platform is developing and standardizing, if Twitter does not make any changes, they will fail in the competition.

Those won’t stand

I think Twitter, Reddit, Snapchat won’t stand the test of time. 

1. Twitter

The number of its users is dramatically decreasing throughout these years. Even though Twitter has its own style, it is getting difficult for users to manage and use. Many users use extensions and add-on tools to manage their Twitter account since Twitter does not provide those functions. Nowadays, as the social media platform is developing, if Twitter stays the same as the way they do right now, they will fail in the competition with other social media platform. 

2. Reddit

Even though there are many users who love using Reddit and they have a large number of visitors per week, they still are unprofitable in the eye of investors. If they are still keeping their style and their format, it is possible that there won’t be any investors and when that day comes, it will become the end of Reddit.

3. Snapchat

Snapchat is a app that has facial filter and people can send photos and videos to their friends and those photos and videos will be automatically deleted after 3 or 5 seconds. It is a interesting social network app. However, the functions of this app are too few of them and now other social platforms have the same functions like Snapchat. If Snapchat cannot develop and have the same multiple functions like other social network platform, they will fail in the competition with other social network platform.

Top 1 technology

The Top 1 technology I pick from top 3 would the customer service chatbot. I think this has a good chance of making an impact on today’s society and society in the future. 

In China, many social networks such as QQ and Weibo have developed their own AI chatbot to answer users’ questions and such AI chatbot dramatically decreases the pressure on the Customer Service department. Also, this chatbot is also used in comforting and chatting with people. Nowadays, this technology is developed very fast and the AI chatbot named Xiaobing which is used in Weibo is smart enough to chat with people without any signs that indicate it is a chatbot. In the future, this service can be developed into many different area such as education, medical field, entertainment field, etc. I believe that such AI chatbot will ultimately change the way that people live and work in the society. In the future, people may have their own AI chatbots with different personalities that are set up by their owner and people can ask their AI chatbots anything which looks like they have a real human steward.

Top 3 Technology Experimented

1. GhostBrowser

I have downloaded GhostBrowser because it claimed that it could easily manage multiple social platform’s account and then I experimented with my Tumblr, G+ and my facebook account. I choose this because it is annoying to open multiple social platform and have to log in every time. I dont think this will succeed in the general population because such function can be developed into Chrome and other Browsers as well. I think they have to find more convenient functions that other browsers wont develop and people would like to use their browser.

2. AI Lenses for Faceu, Snow, Instagram

I have used this AI lenses for a long time and I really love it. This lenses can provide a beautiful and unique video and photos for me to upload on the social media. Many girls would love this functions. I choose this because I use it everyday in my real life. This technology has already succeeded in general population. I think every celebrity in Instagram uses this function for their selfies.

3.Customer service Chatbot

I have used the USCIS chatbot to ask many questions and find the solutions. It is a artificial intelligence bot that will automatically answer your specific questions and find the solutions for you. I choose this because I think this will have a future.

It is an artificial intelligence lenses that can automatically add filter on the lens which means people can see the effect when they are taking photos. This technology is basically used in many selfie app such as Instagram, Faceu and Snow.

Team Purple Bandana Mashup Idea

Our idea is to combine google map, Youtube, Instagram and Tumblr(Twitter) to create a mashup site about Hotel reviews. People can search for the hotel based on the name or area and all the hotels that are related would be showed on the map. When they find the hotel they are interested in, they can click in the hotel and we will provide Youtube Video for a virtual tour, Instagram photos of the hotel and provide Tumblr and Twitter’s comments about their experience. It is easy to use and those comments from Twitter and Tumblr would be more convincing.

Classmate Mashup Website

I really enjoy the Wheel of Lunch mentioned in Nowak’s post because I can use it to decide what I should eat for lunch and dinner. It is really helpful for people like me who cannot decide what to eat every noon and evening.

Also I would definitely use the Maps Krieg in  Chris Liberato’s post since I have to find a new apt for my next semester. This is an awesome website for me right now!

Mashup is to use other website’s open API to put some of those website functions into one website. For example, we can put google map into a company website for customers to find the nearest company’s store or we can have a blog with Youtube video and Flickr photos in it. Such combination is the mashup.

4Chan Vs. Reddit

4chan is an imageboard website which users generally post anonymously, with the most recent posts appearing above the rest. 

A. Similarity & Difference:

1. 4chan has the similar website style (bulletin board) as Reddit but unlike Reddit 4chan is image based which means initially a user posts a image on 4chan and then people start conversation about it.

2. Both 4chan and Reddit are anonymous. Every user on Reddit will have a username for them to post but users on 4chan is completely anonymous which means users would not have username but completely anonymous. 

3.Both websites have their “reputation”. Differ from Reddit’s good reputation, 4chan are infamous because of many of their sub website such as illegal music share and child pornography. It was temporarily banned by Verizon and AT&T.

B.Why you think someone would be attracted to one site over the other.  Which of these sites do you think will be around and popular in the next 5 years.

Some people with bad intention will be attracted to 4chan because many illegal activities are taken place on 4chan such as illegal music share, child pornography and threat of violence. However, people with true interests of exploring their habits and interests will go to Reddit to find people with the same interests. 

In my opinion, Reddit will be still popular in the next 5 years since there are too many illegal activities taking place in 4chan which means it is possible that 4chan will be banned and blocked. There are too many hate speech on 4chan and its nature of anonymity will lead to more problems because people can talk and discuss without any concerns. This is not a good sign of Internet social media platform and people will begin to get away from such website and that will be the end of the story of 4chan.

Reddit Review Post

1. Karma points

My Karma points are two, one from post, one from comment. I do not really get what is the Karma point because I did nor receive as many Karma point as I comment on interesting reddit post. 

2.Were you offended?  

I never be offended because I am used to the social media platform with many different voices. People have their thoughts and opinions, they have their own values and that is not the thing that I can judge about. Everyone has a different life, so everyone would have a different value of world. I believe that we will never know the true stories behind those posts.

3.Did it make you laugh?  

Many Reddit posts did make me laugh and they were very funny and interesting. I enjoy reading the post from /r/cats. All those cats are very cute and funny.

4. Will you be spending more time on Reddit after this class?  Do you see Reddit having a future?  

I will not spend more time on Reddit because I really do not like the format used on Reddit page. It is hard to use and difficult to look for things that I am interested in. But their mobile app is really great and it looks like many other social media platform’s mobile app. I do not think that Reddit will have a future because I have seen many other social platform which is similar to Reddit but they are more mobile friendly and easy to use for most of their users. Also, as far as I know, Reddit is unprofitable until now but their investor is patient because Reddit still has many visitors per week. However, I do not think this will last long. Reddit has to find a way to be profitable to earn their investors’ attention again.  

5. Who do you think Reddit most appeals to?  

I think Reddit most appeals to those who have deep interests in one topic. They can comment and argue with people who have the same interests.

     I research for the Donald Trump AMA controversy topic. 

     This event was happened during the campaign. /r/The_Donald is a subreddit created by Donald Trump supporter. Donald Trump revealed some new information about himself and his plans for the presidency during his Reddit AMA. At some point, the members of the Trump subreddit /r/The_Donald were angry because they did not find AMA discussion page on the front page of the subreddit /r/all while they claimed they had gathered enough points to be on it. Therefore, members of this subreddit accused Reddit of “censoring” the discussion by removing it from /r/all and believed that the AMA’s disapperance from /r/all was politically motivated. 

      After a wave of angry from members of /r/The_Donald, Reddit staff submitted a post explaining why Donald Trump AMA was not on the front page. They stated that it was because of Reddit’s anti-cheating system. Donald Trump AMA page did receive many upvotes but it received many downvotes as well. That’s why this page was never on the front page of /r/all.

I do not think that Reddit is a valid news source because its nature is a forum that everyone can sign up and post their comments and opinions on a specific topic or submit a post that might intrigue social discussions. However, their comments and opinions are not verified by anyone and their posts are not authenticated. Therefore, Reddit post may reveal people’s opinion and comments on a specific topic but it is not a valid news source for people to get news.

1. How is Twitter incorporated into entertainment (songs, movies, tv shows, etc)?  

First of all, many movie stars and singers are using Twitter as their promotion social platform, so they usually use Twitter to propagate their movies and songs. Some company may upload their music video or movie trailer to Twitter in order to get people’s attentions. 

Secondly, sometimes if there is a very popular song or movie, people will tweet and post hashtag about this song and movie to express their love or hate about them. 

Thirdly, some Tv shows’ interesting screenshots will be tweeted and retweeted virally in Twitter as memes. 

2. What area has the largest active twitter following (in your opinion). 

Entertainment area should have the largest active twitter following such as movie stars, singers, and models. Twitter would be a very useful tool for those celebrities to connect with their fans. Since people tend to know more about their idols’ personal lives, the first thing they do when they first sign up for Twitter should be following the movie stars and singers they love. And then, they will gradually explore other areas.

3.Do you think the use of Twitter while taking part in traditional entertainment enhances or detracts from the experience?  

I think the use of Twitter enhances the experience. People can share their feelings and thoughts about those movies and songs in Twitter with others and they can argue about some details of the movie which enhance their understanding and love of the movie. Also, people are easily attracted by interesting things that are posted on Twitter, so they are more likely to search and find the movies and songs that were promoted on Twitter. Such behavior will enhance people’s experience.

If twitter is not used well or the public relations department does not use twitter well, it would become a disaster for a company ,and vice versa.  Marketing campaigns can blow up in a hurry, hashtags can be hijacked, attempts at humor can backfire and misuse of the medium can invoke outrage. Every single tweet that a company sends out can make enormous impact.
