week 11 & week 12
week 11
week 11 postmodernism
Before understanding post modernism, it all starts with modernism , modernism plays huge role especially in design these days, even now days we still can see a lot of designers were impacted by the movement and apply in the work. such as bold shapes, minimal colour palettes, and clear typography.
Further expand on the post modernism, further exploration about the movement effects the now days design communication. Post modernism is "A way of thinking that rejects traditional styles, focusing on innovation, experimentation, and new forms of expression." Understanding different movements, the concept of thinking could help us to communicate better, think in different perspectives. As it said in the explanations, its an form of rebellion, we're asked to be thinking outside the box rejects the normal way, in class we paired up in two, we' we make our own advertisement poster, and communicate how we understand the objects, materials and how to apply in our class activity.
Here me and Aretha choose the crystal mint for our poster, at first we decide to use penguin doll to create ice frozen texture poster as if actually cooling down. But after reaching out to Tim, its not showing the concept of postmodernism, so which change our ideas, we came up an baby sneezing because of the cold, and the allergic from the dog, we crate the effect of people flys away due to the sneeze.
This class activity, which helps me have better idea of, photography project 3, when we're ask to make photo collage based on our photos, also the concept of the style postmodern, reject the traditional concepts, experiment new concepts to express the article.

week 12 art ecosystem
week 12 class activity, we asked to take an tour from year 3 BA and diploma's design work showcase, which helps us open up the vision of the usage of the materials from the seniors final projects. We observe how the seniors chose different components and how they impact the ecology as an designer, throughout the expression of the designs, how we aware of the ecology problems around us, how we observe the problems and express out our ideas.
i chose the cultural community, how it interest me as a designer, it how this work state out something in culture, who are Indonesian to relate with. i love the way how this designer express he/her connects with the older generation, their identity, memories. such as the old version of passport, habits, values, that the younger generation wouldn't take an notice of it, how they got left behind as the new modern generation overtime. which makes me reflect as an designer, never forget to cherish the past moments, what it made us as an person.

Summary
From this term, we start out discussion of topics by taking look of the concept of phenomenology, then continued the following discussion of aesthetics, semiotics, analysis frame work and so on. Understanding the concept of phenomenology which can helps us keep track of the following discussion of topics. Phenomenology places more emphasis on the subjective experience—how we see, feel, and interpret the world around us—than it does on the actual objects. The way how we preceded objects, surrounding are all effected by these factors; lived experience, perception, memory, imagination, .......and so on. These kinds of thoughts might be used while we are investigating the designer we have selected and incorporating their aesthetic into our studio work. How does someone feel or think when they engage with this? This is an alerting "question on what does this look like." How does it look the way they intended it to?
For instance, phenomenology could be used in photography project 3: photography collage. In this project, we select a particular article to explain the meaning, analyze the key words, and consider how meaning is created through experience.
Texture, light, and color can all be used to express our ideas, experiences, and comprehension of the report, which forms our own aesthetics in design work; the idea of aesthetics and how it affects both emotional reaction and design decisions.
The visual and sensory elements of a design that evoke a specific mood, tone, or emotion are referred to as aesthetics, from what I understand. We spoke about how "form" and "function" complement each other in aesthetic design, with form emphasizing look or style and function taking into account how that style is used in a particular setting. For instance, font styles are chosen according to their audience and purpose and have distinct meanings, which is the purpose of graphical communication.
Graphical communication systems used both figurative and non-figurative visuals before writing became a popular form of expression.since the begining of the time, people already choose their communication format in visual languages. Even with the development of literate civilizations and alphabetical and phonetic writing systems, people continued to communicate via drawing messages.Without the use of words, they convey a vast array of nuanced clues, feelings, and responses, taking us directly from the image of the item being shown to the recollection of our actual encounter with it. which is why "Semiotics is a key tool to ensure that intended meanings"
Weeks before we analysis the posters, logos around us, but for post modernism, we make our own advertisement poster, and communicate how we understand the objects, materials and how to apply in our class activity. It also links to week 12 class activity, we asked to take an tour from year 3 BA and diploma's design work showcase, which helps us open up the vision of the usage of the materials from the seniors final projects. We observe how the seniors chose different components and how they impact the ecology as an designer, throughout the expression of the designs.

This could reffers to week 3 activity, when we're asked to choose different advertisements posters, then we analysis what context, such as formal analysis, contextual analysis, explain symbol and signs in the poster we're chosen to deepen the importance of typography, compositions of visual in posters. These which could also linked to qiu wen's typography workshop, when we ask to decide on the emotions we work on and design out the emotions through out the alphabet letters, what i realise the important is how to communicate from the work, not only aesthetic purposes, it is also important for the communication purposes, how it can effectively shown the message behind.
Building up these mindset could also apply on the further following topics, such as analysis frame work, we taking look at different concept of objects from different country batik, nina bag, rattan, analyses the materials on where could be used, actual function. different methods or the way how objects being made.Aware of the materials could help us in studio class for printing out the booklets, paper texture and gsm used for each designs exhibitions. craft workshop booklet, choices of coloured papers, shapes and compositions to form the booklet which helps to build up my awareness.
We go on a field trip to Golden Landmark in week six, and we are required to take photographs of various artifacts. This relates to one of the items I picked out for last week's class assignment, in which I brought a set of my favorite game badge merchandise that I decorated.I then started looking for related items that tie everything together. The majority of the intriguing items I discovered were from secondhand clothes stores, such cartoon badges, key chains with lace fabric, key and pearl, and little, vintage-style boxes.
These which trains us how to think, how to connects objects, messages though the design and effects the environment around us.

week5&week6/2025
week 5
For week 5, we're required to examine the topic of analyzing a work of design, what the meaning behind all the designs we've seen in our everyday lives, and considering from different viewpoints; purposes, meanings, uses of medium, and features of form, for example, batik, Freitag, and ant chairs.Looking at the progression of how it was constructed for many objectives, some were clothing, others were philosophical expressions, some were made of industry, functional uses.
This class activity explores the analysis of design work by categorizing objects into well-crafted, material interesting, or memorable characteristics. Handcrafted badge collections are memorable due to their emotional impact. Functional items, like wallets and shoulder bags, are designed for daily use and convenience. The class emphasizes the importance of understanding the function, meaning, and details of each object to gain a better understanding of design and its impact on our surroundings.
Analyse work of design, builds up the sharp sense usage of the materials, to be specific, choices of paper, methods of printing for studio design works. Different types of choices along with the deisgns would give different effects, purposes, and texture will give whole different outcome, and effects the way how people perceives the final visual outcome. which its one of the important factor for each designers to present out their designs work
These which could also linked to qiu wen's typography workshop, when we ask to decide on the emotions we work on and design out the emotions through out the alphabet letters, what i realise the important is how to communicate from the work, not only aesthetic purposes, it is also important for the communication purposes, how it can effectively shown the message behind.
badge that i shown for object analyses in class :

week 6
For week 6, we have field trip at golden landmark, we're asked to take pictures of different objects, and connects into one of my curated object from last week class activity, from last week activities i bring an set of my favourite game badge merch that full of decorations that i put it on.So i begin to search for similar object materials which connects it together, mostly the interesting objects i found mostly from the thrift clothing store, such as key chains with lace fabric, key and pearl, cartoon badge, and old vintage style small boxes. These objects materials clearly made out of decorations or collecting purposes rather considering if it useful or not, it was overdecorated, gorgeous, visual appealing, shiny, bright colour, these elements which states out it was carefully designed, like handcraft objects. Also not only catches customers attention, it also bought up strong nostalgic, adore feeling, which gives me the relation under the theme of desire, how people ends up purchasing these items eventually when they know its not necessarily need for daily life, what's really interesting of how these item design could evoke people’s desire emotions.
Having actual observations on the actual designs objects around us, have clear image, better sensation of the designs function, how it applies the purpose. How it conveys the msg, emotions , cultures in design.
Building up these mindset could also apply on the further following topics, such as analysis frame work, we taking look at different concept of objects from different country batik, nina bag, rattan, analyses the materials on where could be used, actual function. different methods or the way how objects being made.Aware of the materials could help us in studio class for printing out the booklets, paper texture and gsm used for each designs exhibitions. craft workshop booklet, choices of coloured papers, shapes and compositions to form the booklet which helps to build up my awareness.

week 2/2025/ aesthetics
what are some notable ideas from today's session ?
-consider the topic, activity, keywords.
we explore the concept of aesthetics and how it influences design choices and emotional response. From what I’ve learned, aesthetics refers to the visual and sensory qualities of a design that create a particular mood, tone, or feeling. we discussed how "form" and "function" work together in aesthetic design -- where form focuses on the appearances or style, and function considers how that style is used in a specific context. For example, different font styles carry different meanings and are chosen based on their purpose and audience.
we examined typefaces such as handwritten fonts -often associated with elegance or tradition, typically used for weddings or formal invitations--- and arial, which has a more industrial, modern feel and is used in digital platforms for clear communication. By comparing these fonts, i started to understand how typography plays a key role in creating a brand's visual identity.
Our class activity involved visiting a hawker centre to photograph food stall logos and imagine their brand personality. We chose a Chinese bar called "夜班 Night Shift" with calligraphic Chinese characters, highlighting how design choices shape our perception of brand personality.
class activity : drawing out character based on the impression of the shops.
These expands on the following projects, studio work, choosing different designers aesthetic and styles to apply on our work, their evolution of style, explorations, researches so on..... this reinforced the idea that aesthetics are not just visual, -- they 're deeply personal and shaped by the context, history, art movements, cultures and memory. By studying the aesthetics of different designers, such as Ikko tanaka, get to know that he was deeply influenced by the bauhaus modern style, Japanese traditional art, how he forms unique style after he fully understands the different between. questions of different types of aesthetics could also helps us develops our own sense of design.

week 1 /2025/ Phenomenology
what are some notable ideas for today's session ?
We studied the idea of phenomenology in our first week, which is a philosophical method that looks at how people see and understand the world of their own experiences. Phenomenology places more emphasis on the subjective experience—how we see, feel, and interpret the world around us—than it does on the actual objects. This knowledge is particularly relevant to design since perception, emotion, and memory frequently affect how viewers engage with or react to a piece of visual art.
We examined a picture by illustrator Kathrin Honesta, who is known for using colour and texture to create vibrant atmospheres, in order to have a deeper understanding of this idea. We discussed in class how she created a cozy, sentimental atmosphere out of a chilly, icy landscape. Her use of rich textures and gentle tones evoked a sensation that was probably based on her own recollections rather than merely describing a location.
This demonstrated to me how design phenomenology can transform images into lived realities, design its not about looking good, we need to dig through the experiences, how the work perceives, what it actually meant.
To deepen understanding, during class activities , we're asked to Interpret the idea of 'shadows' or 'time' by create drawings, displays images to explain statements. at first i explored different concepts in my sketches, such as people "cutting shadows ", black and white characteristics of the shadow.....at the end I decided to investigate shadows because of the Japanese artist Kosei Komatsu, whose piece "Dreams of Forest" creates dynamic, shifting shadow patterns by experimenting with light and mirrors. As I observed these shadows change, I thought about how, just as human vision is influenced by light, time, and experience, shadows might also symbolize hidden or changing aspects of our identities that are shaped by our environment and viewpoints.
class activity, my sketch and Interpretation of the term shadow :
during class discussions, I was also challenged to think more deeply about design by interacting with phenomenology in this way. I was reminded that design is about how people experience a thing on an intellectual, physical, and emotional level in addition to its aesthetic appeal. This shift in mindset is especially valuable for my design training, as I work towards a more adjusted, empathetic approach. For example, when researching a designer for our final project, I’ll not only look at their style but also ask: What experiences shaped this work? What emotions or memories are they trying to convey?
for example, phenomenology, could apply on photography project 3, photography collage, we choose specific article to elaborate the meaning, analysis the key words, reflect on how meaning is formed through experience, by texture, light, colours could form, indicate our thoughts, experience, understanding of the report.
Photography class activity:
My understanding is that people's interpretations and imaginations of things and concepts are a reflection of their memories, experiences, and emotions. They can also reveal their desires and how they apply them to their everyday observations or creations. We are asked to think during class time, even though everyone is concentrating on the true meaning.
These mindset could apply on researching on the designer we have choose and blend their style into our studio work. Alerting, "question on what does this look like " " how does this make someone feel or think when they interact with it ? how does it presents out the way they wanted ?

Week 12
Q1: What kinds of collaborative projects would you like to do ?
Creative direction for fashion
Such as brand collection designs, fashion magazine layout designs, also brand designs, brand websites as an assistant to help the fashion designer to stand out more. I could collaborate with a fashion designer to design accessories, such as hand bags, skirts and so on, for example, such as designing an illustration handbag.I could learn a lot of critical thinking skills from the fashion designer due to some similarities in the major.
Music
I have a high interest in music, especially music videos. I could collaborate with a music student from the music major and create a new music video based on the songs that they composed, and further expand more merch designs such as CD album cover, key chains, it can train up my design skills more, also it is an opportunity to train my communication skills.
Animation
Illustration of a book, or collaboration to come out in game character designs or create animation videos for public alert uses, such as warning videos displayed in MRT, or create children story books.i believe which helps me to find out my own design or art style better, and build up my sensory of style or taste, learning illustration fundations from animation students.

Q2: What kind of final projects would you like to do ?
Awareness of Surrogacy, even though we live under the protections of surrogacy it's still a serious concern in other countries.i observed from the new reports some celebrities would choose surrogacy just to prevent gaining weight or side effects after pregnancy, and there’s an huge black industry’s chain behind all of the surrogacy system. I could design the billboards, to display around the MRT area or around the streets which can bring people strongly alert. Or collaborate with an artist to come out of the art exhibition or showcase to express the topic of surrogacy, designing posters, hand booklet.
Q3: consider “community engagement and professional skills “
Animal lover league
I noticed that the wild animals normally becomes an target especially in murder case new in recent singapore's report, which brings up my alert, by spreading awareness i could collaborate with the communities to start up an student projects or competition by helping the wild cats to design an cardboard house which easy to recycle or build up again as an protection shelter towards to the wild animals.
ArtsEquator
By helping them design a platform to promote the southeast art promotions, also gaining up critical thinking skills by collaborating with them to create a critical environment for the artists.
Autism association
By helping them design or create visual supports such as schedules, labelled storage bins, reminders due to autism, kids mostly rely on visual elements to help them understand the environments, by design visual supports which can help autistic kids have less struggle when they are facing education pressure.
Q4: how might CTS -A help you professionally ?
It helps me to observe, reflect, alert the surroundings that happens, and how can I think of a solution and connect with my professional skills, how can I specifically come out with a solution and bring criticism on it.such as evaluate arguments, fix the errors and elaborate the exact solutions, which clearly helps me to digest complex information especially towards to the new year to process all new informations. Such as stress management in studio and craft workshops, redoing amounts of work and training how to design in professional ways, process and documentation as a loopback for all of our modules.

Week 11
Connects CTS A to all your other modules (and components)
Craft :
Emotional intelligence, it’s important for me to manage my emotions especially towards craft workshops due to strict requirements, and the stress emotions of the amount of hard work put inside but still does not reach the expectations or get criticised to re-work from scratch.
Studio :
Growth mindset, I felt like the studio it’s the module that really refreshes my mind during every class. It trains my design skills more, facing challenges which means I have to adapt my mindset to quickly catch up the situations going on in studio class.
Digital skills :
Digital media documents for art practice, training our practical skills such as pen tool, gradient of colour, quick selection tool. It's very useful for us to further carry on for other modules' tasks, such as craft workshop positive and negative, studio rotoscope projects and in design layout in photography.
Photography :
I felt like photography trains up my critical thinking skills, to be observant around the surroundings, and how you can use up the environments to take out creative photo shoots. Play among the lighting and the angles of cameras, which trains up the way I observe the objects nearby me.

Week 10
Q: how do you understand the critical thinking skills module ?
Explain your choice of visual metaphor. Do you personally have an alternative causal metaphor ? include image/ in your response.
For this term I have fully understood most of the critical thinking skills modules, such as critical thinking, self awareness, growth mindset, emotional intelligence, plagiarism and so on.The choice of my group's visual metaphor it's an human brain, divided in each parts represents each different modules, just like how human brains, each have different responsible functions, according to the order we divided important parts of the “brain” into 3 bid ares: first priority it's important for us to know what is critical thinking. It's the way we critically think of the world around us, how you observe surroundings and how to come up with questions. It's the most important foundation that was built before we perceive other modules, knowledge.Being critical is to train the way we receive, observe objects around us and how we proceed to come up with solutions.
Second, which is digital media, documentation and organise process, how we categorise the resources that we have researched or received, recording the progress of our work.
Last, which is the growth mindset, self-regulations behind all of it, such as stress management, overcoming failure, adapting challenges and motivation for us to carry on our career. These three are the ones we think it's important and we put it according to the order, and we further expand it more and connect it all together to form a complete brain, such as emotional intelligence, collaborative skills, facts sources reliable , assertion and conflict.

Q:Which was your favourite activity or session ? why? Which aspects of it were memorable for you ?
Growth mindset which really gives a strong impression, we are told to divide into groups, and sketch out what’s in our mind now. And how we have small group discussions to talk about how we are feeling now, sharing our own experiences, and having a talk on how to open to constructive criticism.the reason why i found out enjoy a lot for this talking session, is that there’s a proper chance for us to open and share personal experiences, worries, thoughts and to gain or develop yourself. Especially the part when teng hong told us, when we got criticism, it was about the work not your person, it opened my perspectives. Redoing the work which is the most common thing happens during the learning process, especially when we are learning as a designer.Got criticism of the work may be very annoying and tiring, but it's important how you adapt and digest the command to improve better, i should use this mindset especially towards to craft and studio.

Q:What is the value of working in a group ?
The value of working in a group, for me, is a chance for me to open new perspectives, how we could work together to summarise different points of view and improve communication skills with each other. Also its a chance for me to check on if there is anything missing, and using each people’s different advantages and disadvantages to organised to came out better work.

Q: What do you wish you did more of, or better ?
I wish to improve my professional skills, especially thinking as a designer, how I could be more critical and observant, like designing posters, layouts and so on,for example type and language poster designs, which is one of my biggest weak spot due to lack of understanding basics foundations of designs, some of my work would came up illogically and “abstract”.
Also managing my emotions it's another thing that I could do better because I'm an overthinker, spending my time overthinking things that might not happen. Meditation is the method that I should keep improving over and over again. It's hard for me to calm down and blank out my thoughts, and tidy up my emotions, it really becomes a burden for me towards work,so mediation can help to reduce my stress.

Week 3
Q1. We talk about “self-management,” “self-awareness.” “empathy” and “relationship management". Which aspect do you think you are strongest at,and which is something you should try to improve ? discuss with reference to today’s activities, and even your studio collaborations.
Self-awareness and empathy are the two areas where I feel I'm strong at it. I understand my own emotions, which allows me to navigate my emotions with a high degree of clarity. Empathy, in particular, is always putting myself in other’s shoes to understand others emotions. This skill ables me to pick up clues, details that others focused on, building deeper connections with the surroundings.
However, relationship management is a serious challenge for me. As someone with a sensitive personality.I often find myself overthinking and dwelling on unnecessary details when i'm with others.which its the main reasons why make it difficult to manage social management effectively.Recent class discussion which gained valuable insights, i learned that receiving critical feedback on my work it's not personal and rather an indication that the work does not reached the standards. Mistakes which are normal in the learning process and an opportunity for growth.
As a designer steeping in the industry, the focus is not just on the effort, but what's more it's on the quality and the effectiveness of the outcome. Surely, it's crucial for me to manage my emotions, but this is the important matter a designer should adopt.By starting with looking at things from different perspectives and having enough understanding to identify what is important for me, focus more on my inner voice and keep trying the mediation we are asked to do for every critical thinking class which i found out it's a good solution to important for me especially towards to relationship management.

Week 2 reflection
Q1. describe your strength and weakness as a collaborator. What did you do well, and what are some areas to improve ? discuss with reference to today’s activities.
As a collaborator, I’m a good listener who values others' perspectives, which helps me work effectively with my teammates and contribute to achieving our shared goals. I actively assist others, offering help with tasks they’re struggling with and supporting the team wherever needed.
However, I’ve realized that my communication skills could be improved. I tend to hold back my thoughts and only share them with those I feel comfortable with, which slows down my collaboration. I recognize this as a weakness, especially in group work, I take longer to open up. To improve, I plan to approaching different people during studio class group activities, start by asking questions, and gradually share my ideas—particularly in studio classes when working on group projects. When I took the first move to communicate, I was surprised that my ideas connected well with the team. One benefit of group work is that I can write or sketch my thoughts, which makes it easier for me to contribute. I also realized that participating in competitions or events would be a great way to practice and improve my communication skills.

Q2.if you had more time and an unlimited budget, how would you design the monument differently including pictures of the group work, and your personal redesign.
If I had more time and an unlimited budget for the monument, I would create a highlight design of Olympic landmarks from around the world, or the significant Olympic torch. The design could be cut out and stand out like a 3D model. In addition, I would include framed pictures of different athletes. Creating dynamic visual elements, furthermore, I would use magazine pages and leftovers to cut out objects representing sports like basketball, tennis, or the unique uniforms athletes wear. For the base of the monument, I would use A3 coloured paper to cut out the shape of each country on maps, and state out each athlete's region.

Week 1 reflection
Q1. describe your understanding of critical thinking that you had before class and reflect on what you may have learned.
Before taking the critical thinking class, I thought it was simply about being fair, honest, and detailed. After watching the introductory video, I learned that critical thinking is more about questioning and discovering. I realized there’s a process behind professional statements. Asking questions isn’t about throwing out random ones; as critical thinkers and designers, it’s important to observe carefully and focus on key points. Instead of criticizing, we should step back, reflect, and uncover what's behind the scenes to identify problems—like discovering new things, asking the right questions, and finding solutions.
Q2. What have you learned about mindfulness ? How might you integrate this into your learning environment ?
During class activities, we were guided to meditate by following a video, focusing on our breath. It was challenging for me to slow down and concentrate, as I often felt overwhelmed with everything on my plate and the need to stay alert. I also realized it’s difficult to adjust my perception of judgments from different instructors. Teng Hong explained the important of identifies whether a judgment is truly useful, emphasizing that it’s more about how we manage it. The key is learning how to use this mindset to stay calm, focused, and sort things out effectively.
Q3. describe an eventful moment you have experienced in this class.
The most memorable moment in this class was during a group discussion on improving classroom productivity. We divided into groups to analyze our surroundings, questioning things like why the charging cables were arranged a certain way. We identified hidden problems that might be affecting the classroom's efficiency and brainstormed solutions to present. This experience showed how critical thinking can be applied in everyday life, from noticing small details to finding practical solutions.
