FSGE SPOILERS once again

So, did we ever figure out why Rafal needed to note the wind's schedule to himself or can I headcanon that it's because he still can't get used to flying since the duology?

Because if I can, I am going to cry my eyes out because of that fact.

It's actually so crazy to re-read the earlier books after you've read the duology. Like, the whole idea that this person is Rhian Fucking Mistral is blowing my mind. The foreshadowing of it all does. I started reading the duology not so long ago, so I already forgot how Rafal acted in the third book, hence why I didn't realize what was wrong with Rafal in the duology. Now, re-reading it, it just all makes much more sense. Like, oh my gosh, I wonder why is this calm, strict and straightforward guy turned into a sassy, cringey teenager who acts like a classical vilain.

And now, knowing about all the history behind the school? It's even more crazier. "The Old School", buddy, you've built it yourself.

I really want to yap about Vulcan and Rhian, but the sad truth is, I quite literally have no idea what to say. So, to fill the empty hole in my heart, I’ve just been imagining them as a couple.

A dysfunctional couple, mind you. I’ve been thinking about all the typical things couples do—all the activities, fun stuff, and so on—but with their dynamic, everything turns kind of toxic. Just imagining the simplest things, like them going on a picnic or having an outdoor date, Vulcan taking Rhian to Netherwood, and it always somehow ending with Rhian trying to justify Vulcan’s behavior again... Rhian reflecting on their toxic love... The idea that *anything* they do will always end with Rhian crying in his bed is just so funny to me.

And the worst part is that he can’t even fully acknowledge how bad it is. Rhian will always find some excuse for Vulcan’s toxicity—because, in his mind, their relationship *can’t* be that bad! They just had a beautiful date, and Rhian really liked the way Vulcan played with his curls, so clearly the pros outweigh the cons! Sure, he cried his eyes out afterward, but that’s fine. They should definitely do it all over again, and Rhian should absolutely never break up with Vulcan.

So, it turns out rotsge WAS in fact translated to Russian, but they got rid of all the homosexual activities in the translation.

Which means that it is quiet possible that all the previous SGE books that I read in Russian had much more lgbtq representation. OUH. I really don't want to re-read everything...

Something, something, Rhian's sleep schedule getting only worse with Vulcan's arrive because he suddenly needs to be on the balcony deep in the night, when Vulcan is going for his usual ice swim. He also thinks of changing his own swimming-in-the-morning sessions schedule, just so it would line up with Vulcan's swims, totally by only an accident.

Sooo... 👉👈I had more ideas and decided to share them because I'm having more fun than expected with what was supposed to be a side quest. I can work on two projects at once... Probably.

Housing arrangements:

Rafal: An actual house close to the studio, close-ish to Rhian

Rhian: A penthouse apartment or an equivalent close to the studio

Sophie: A very nice apartment notably not close to the studio but close to Agatha

Agatha: n/a Close to Sophie, has Callis's mark all over it, Tedros complains about it often

Pirate Captain: Close to a body of water, not near studio, maybe a townhouse?

Vulcan: (Yes he's here) a jail cell Formerly: (wrecked) victorian house

Rafal rarely visits others' homes, but Rhian visits his often enough to have a room more or less dedicated to his use. They have a key to each other's houses.

Rhian, when not living and breathing for his work, is either at his or Rafal's place. Unofficially lived with Vulcan for a bit, doesn't like to talk about it.

Agatha and Sophie tried living together once after reuniting and then swore never again. Often meet in third places so they don't have to deal with each other's spaces. Agatha does go over to Tedros's house, though. Sometimes he reciprocates but often avoids going to her house.

I would like to put it here, if I have not already stated it, that Rafal would have been better than Rhian had he not been injured. That is all.

Rhian's dating life, because I'm interested even if you're not, was pretty standard for him up until he met Vulcan. They met at an official thing for the company where he was either a new investor or a new hire. Either somewhat works. Rafal is suspicious of him and Rhian falls head over heels for the bad boy he thought he'd been waiting for. They get together and things slowly begin to turn rotten. Rhian starts to abandon his job, looks visibly unhealthy, and his body screams at him about how it's being treated (fainting, vomiting, inability to stand on his own, etc.). But it's all okay because Vulcan said it's okay before handing him another drink. Why would his duckling ever need to question him?

He spends most of his time at Vulcan's house on a large, overpriced, beanbag-looking thing because he physically cannot leave. Rafal literally has to drag him out of the house while Vulcan is out doing something else. Rhian is too weak to put up much of a fight. The cops come by later with a warrant and arrest Vulcan for having a variety of illegal things in his house that could have made the Very Bad situation even Worse. Rhian gets put into the hospital and therapy to deal with it.

His position at the company is touch and go for a while, but he does get to keep it after mostly recovering. There aren't any relationships that he would call anything other than a fling between Vulcan and Sophie arriving. Enter the pirate captain (Did we ever decide on a name for him? Last I heard was Adam/Edward and that never really seemed to get resolved...) who is also a principal dancer but one that's a year or two away from retirement. (Specifically, he is mainly here because I thought it would be funny if the guys playing the nutcracker and the rat king were in a relationship, and the pirate captain seemed like a good rat king.)

Rhian is a bit flighty around their entire relationship so they don't have a label yet, but there is definitely something there. They have their soft moments in the back of the studio while others are practicing. They go on dates sometimes. Things are taken slowly for Rhian's benefit because this man was around and saw him while he was mid-recovery, and it was awful.

Rafal and James have a relationship but neither puts a label on it. Rafal refuses to and James can't figure out what he would call it. Are they friends? Are they acquaintances? He doesn't know and is a bit afraid to ask. What he does know is that they aren't dating because he has his regularly scheduled on-again off-again relationship with Kyma to keep him busy. (I'm thinking of making him a stage hand just for something different. Maybe a lights guy? I don't know what to do with Kyma now that I've dragged her into this. If I make her a ballerina, that's a large amount of the cast who are ballet dancers, but this is also a ballet au. Let's see... She's a soloist who is currently waiting for a principal spot to open up, who may or may not work at a different company so she's not subjected to the utter mess that's going on over at this one.)

Dovey-teacher, Lesso-teacher, the general staff remain the staff but in different departments. Anemone is in charge of the costume department.

That was more than I thought I had, but I also have been trying to wrangle a plot that does not wish to exist. It makes a bit of sense I suppose.

I just thought of this.... What if Rafal tried spicy food?

He would not die due to his immortality, but I suppose it depends on his palate. The foods we’ve canonically seen him eat were not spicy, so he, potentially, doesn’t eat spicy food at all or only rarely does, and would thereby have a low tolerance. Maybe he’d even react really poorly and experience pain—flushing red, his nerves numbing, tongue throbbing—before he downs a lot of milk. If he did try to eat spicy food under these conditions, he’d have to do it alone or with Rhian, not in front of students or guests.

If Rafal’s experience of the Woods were very Anglo-Saxon/Germanic, he probably would not be used to spicy condiments in general (aside from mustard?). However, the different kingdoms are very multicultural, to the point where I don’t think they would be limited to blander, medieval food (probably just salted and preserved prior to the Western world’s exposure to spices from the East/from cultural exchange/diffusion, the Silk Road, and syncretism in art/styles of cuisine, etc.) Thus, he could have gained enough exposure to have built a tolerance, but perhaps, given his favorite sandwiches, he simply prefers non-spicy food.

The cucumbers point to him liking cold and refreshing sustenance, so we could possibly characterize him as someone with less complex tastes or a milder palate? He is kind of an obsessive person with a one-track mind, so I suppose I would expect him to have limited tastes/actual preferential choices, yet for the sake of keeping his reputation intact, he probably at least tolerates most food, spicy and non-spicy, to not be seen as Rhian might be (potentially hard-to-please or overly “fussy” and refined I would guess?).
