HENRY’s little monkey hands took the cable and examined the end of the cable with a cute little head-tilt before gently pressing it into the hole on the pendant.  Immediately, his hologram glowed a little bit brighter, and he sat, fully intending to lounge where he was.  “That’s better.  Nothing like a good cup o’ volt.”

“Can you charge yourself, or do I need to charge you for you?” 

“You’re not sticking a USB cable up my butt, if that’s what you’re asking,” HENRY said, clearly joking.  “If you have a micro USB cable, I think this thing charges that way.  Yeah, look,” he said, pointing at a  slot on the bling monkey, at the base of its feet.  “Fitz put super-efficient batteries in here, so if you charge it as long as a phone, I should be good for all day.”

Rhee nearly face-palmed.

“You can certainly charge yourself after that remark.”

Even so, Rhee rummaged around and found an appropriate charger. She did not have many electrical devices, but she stored lots of chargers just in case.

“Does this work?”

“I do not know how you could. I suppose on the internet, but-” here she shrugged. “Either way, I offer you refuge.”

HENRY smiled, an expression that looked a little weird on a monkey face, especially since Fitz hadn’t quite worked on tweaking the expressions very far.  “Awesome, free rent,” he said, fist-pumping the air.  “You’re gonna have to make sure this thing stays charged, though,” he pointed out, tapping the little necklace.

“It is not like it will be that big of an issue for me. All you use is electricity, which I do not use much of myself. I will leave an outlet open specifically for you. Can you charge yourself, or do I need to charge you for you?”

HENRY smiled, an expression that looked a little weird on a monkey face, especially since Fitz hadn’t quite worked on tweaking the expressions very far.  “Awesome, free rent,” he said, fist-pumping the air.  “You’re gonna have to make sure this thing stays charged, though,” he pointed out, tapping the little necklace.

“If I were still in the business, I would track him down and offer my services, though he is probably doing just fine alone.”

“I always wanted to meet the captain and thank him for what he did.”

“Everyone does at some point, ya know.  He’s a real popular guy.”  HENRY didn’t know about the Sokovia Accords or the following mess, and only just knew about much of the other stuff that had come about during the aftermath of the fall of SHIELD.  Only what little he could access on the news, after all.  The rest was…out of reach.  “I mean, what’s not to like?  Humble guy comes out of nowhere to become the epitome of American gung-ho patriotism, and then gets totally martyred saving the world, and then it turns out he’s not actually dead at all?  If he weren’t already a movie star, I’d say he needs to have a movie made about it!”

“It is a shame about the fallout from the Sokovia Records. Personally I think they are bullshit. I just finished reading them, and it is so… I understand the need to protect the public, but the way they want to do it is just-” She shook her head. “Now he is in hiding. “Your secret’s safe with me,” HENRY said, pointing at the ceiling as if to demonstrate…something or other.  “It was founded by an American and a Brit, really.  The SHIELD part.  Its predecessor was definitely American and British and a product of World War Two with all the spy stuff and the Star Spangled Man With a Plan musicals and the German defectors and everything like that.”

“Captain America?” Rhee asked in surprise. “My Sabba met him once! Said he was a very polite person, very quiet. I always wanted to meet the captain and thank him for what he did.”

“Actually, I think you’ll find that SHIELD is an international organization of people sticking their noses into everything.  But they’re not all bad, I mean, think of all the things they’ve done to save the world, right?  SHIELD brought the Avengers together, they stopped Hydra, sort of, twice, huuuge advancements in technology, they do first contact situations with alien species if they can, and look at me, I mean, if you left it up to the Starks and Hammers of the world, I’d probably just be a disembodied voice, and nobody likes that.”

Rhee chuckled at his correction.

“They feel very American.” Rhee shrugged. “I suppose. I believe you are the best thing SHIELD has created, however. I still am not fond of them, however. Do not ever tell Fitz I said so.”

“That’s weird.  In my experience, humans hate being ignored.  I’ve watched Fitz just sit there, waiting for Simmons to notice him with a funny expression and he got upset when she took more than ten minutes to respond to something he was asking.”  Humans were odd folk.

“Well, we like being ignored by people we do not like, and no offense, HENRY, but I have never been a fan of SHIELD. It is more Americans sticking their noses into everything, whether they need to or not.”

“Well, you know what they say about the bonds forged in fire or something about that.  Hey, maybe you could be a consultant or something.  Not like a Tony Stark kind of consultant, more like…like that one retired guy in all the spy shows who they come to when they need advice or contacts or something, the one who’s always pointing out he’s retired, and if the bad guys come knocking, he’s like hey, I don’t know squat, I’m retired.”  

Rhee laughed more. 

“I kind of like that idea. But I will not pitch it to Fitz unless he asks me to come out of retirement. I do not think he will, however, unless they really need me. I might not have a choice then. But I like my life better thinking that SHIELD either does not know I am here or is just ignoring my presence.”

“Is that good or bad, because you make it sound pretty bad, like losing your legs gave you the push you needed to get out of that whole secrets and spies thing,” HENRY said, flopping onto his back like a drunk redneck watching television.

Rhee laughed at HENRY’s behavior.

“Bad, I think. I would be less bored, but I do not think it was good for me. I did not like the secrets thing. The bonds I had, however, were nice. Too bad they could not last.”

“I know how to use them, I just choose not to. I worry about being hacked.”

“You do a lot of stuff that would be hack-worthy?”  HENRY didn’t think she seemed the type.  Not anymore.  She seemed retired.  But what did HENRY know about that?  Every movie where a spy claimed to retire, they always quickly un-retired.

Rhee chuckled.

“I used to, until my legs. I moved across the world to start new, but I think that being friends with Fitz might bring me back to it.”

“Hey, you haven’t seen the inside of a computer core, trust me, this is huge.”  To HENRY, after all, the only time he got to experience something other than the lab was when he was booting up or shutting down, which felt a bit like a terrifying version of anaesthesia.  He hopped down and looked around the room, climbing the furniture, and it was clear that Fitz had studied capuchin motion to a significant extent.

“That does not sound pleasant,” Rhee agreed. “I do not have much of a computer. I know how to use them, I just choose not to. I worry about being hacked.”

“It’s a life simulation thing, apparently, really popular with the kids and teenagers, Fitz likes to use it as a basis for simple animations instead of starting from scratch or motion-capture for some reason.”  At least he had during alpha testing.  He may have planned to update with real motion-capture at some point, but HENRY wasn’t privy to that information.

He hopped up on Rhee, not that there was any kind of weight shift beyond the weight of the little projector amulet.  “Onwards, mi amie!”

“Maybe because it was quicker? Something was already there he could work with?” She didn’t know much about that kind of thing. She laughed at his next words and struck a pose. “Onwards and upwards!”

She climbed up the stairs and opened the door to her apartment.

“…That sounds like a strange game, HENRY. I am not sure that I would like to play it.” She frowned. “Anyway, should we go back up to my flat?”

“That’s not hard.  If worse comes to worse, I can consult websites and basic coding manuals,” he pointed out, laying back on his side and propping his head up with his elbows.  “Fitz thought it would be funny to give me both human and monkey mannerisms, so maybe I can rip a drinking animation from the Sims and adapt it.”

“Sims? Like Simmons? Or simians?” -the fact she knew what a simian was said she probably was spending a little too much time talking to Fitz. “Do you need computer access to do these things?”
