1994 - Damien Echols (18) stands trial for the murder of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis, AR, the previous May; the investigating officers and prosecutors in the case alleged Echols - alongside two other teenage boys- beat, castrated, and drowned the three boys as part of a Satanic ritual (Items used as evidence during the trial included black t-shirts and heavy metal posters). After a media-saturated trial, the jury found the three teens guilty of triple murder; whilst his alleged accomplices recieved life sentences, Echols was sentenced to death.

2019- After spending over 18 years on Arkansas' Death Row, Damien Echols was released alongside the two other convicted after a successful innocence campaign led them to be known internationally as the "West Memphis Three". The lingering doubt surrounding their guilt led to a team of filmmakers creating a documentary series known as "Paradise Lost". Many celebrities (such as Eddie Vedder and Henry Rollins) later came to protest and raise funds on behalf of the 'Free The Three' campaign, and Hollywood heavyweight Peter Jackson would also play a part in asserting their innocence by hiring an expert panel to review the evidence and releasing his own documentary on the case called 'West of Memphis". In August 2011 Echols walked free from Death Row after negotiating an Alford Plea deal with the State. He left prison in the company of his wife Lori (whom he married in 1999) while a crowd cheered outside. Since his release he has written two books about his life and relationship with Lori, exhibited and sold his visual art, given talks about his experience with being found guilty of a crime he didnt commit, and offered lessons on ceremonial magick.

ββHe was too inebriated [to record the vocals for βThe Kiss of Dawnβ]. Palmer called his friend aside for a heart-to-heart talk. βI told Ville that I had to be honest, and that I felt he would sing the song better if he was not so drunk,β he recalls. βInstead of fighting, he just apologized and told me that he had been going through a really tough time. I tried to encourage him to talk about it, as he seemed really sad and was close to tears. He told me how life had become a struggle, but I was still not aware of how extreme his feelings were. I learned that he had been feeling low for many years now. He was needing at least three beers to just leave the house, and was really not eating well at all. [He was] drinking very heavily and just smoking all day. It all became extremely serious when I learned from Ville that he had been waking up and feeling like he didnβt want to carry on with his life. He told me that his wrists felt like they were burning.ββ
