On the topic of Con O'Neill's beautiful performance of La vie en rose by Edith Piaf as my most dearest blorbeau Izzy, I've written another translation as a native French speaker because some of the translations I've seen going around this week don't feel true to the original lyrics. They sometimes feel too literal in their word for word translation while missing the meaning or implication of the phrase. Translation is an art, and I don't claim to be a particularly gifted artist, but here goes.
The first part of the song starts in English and really, Ned Lowe deserved to die for interrupting that beautiful solo and preventing Ed and Stede from enjoying their romantic slow dance.
Hold me close and hold me fast / The magic spell you cast / This is la vie en rose
When you kiss me heaven sighs / And though I close my eyes / I see la vie en rose
When you press me to your heart / I'm in a world apart / A world where roses bloom
And when you speak, angels sing from above / Everyday words seem to turn into love
The next part after Miss Rapier Wit was so rudely interrupted goes as follows,
Quand il me prend dans ses bras / Il me parle l'a tout bas / Je vois la vie en rose
Which I would translate as,
When he embraces me / He speaks to me softly / I see life through rose colored glasses
In this connotation, seeing life through rose colored glasses is a good thing, not naive or unrealistic. The context of the song's initial release and popularization post WWII is not ignorant of suffering but rather speaks to a love so powerful it makes the world beautiful in spite of it.
Il me dit des mots d'amour/ Des mots de tous les jours / Et ça m'fait quelque chose
He tells me loving words / Everyday words / And it touches me
I had considered an alternative translation to the last line along the lines of he had to do it to [em] me, but I couldn't work it comfortably into the phrase. So, it could also be read as it's doing it to me.
Il est entrĂŠ dans mon coeur / Une part de bonheur / Dont je connais la cause
He came into my heart / A piece of happiness / Of which I know the cause
No notes here, just dreamily sighing over those Oliver award winning pipes.
C'est lui pour moi / Moi pour lui dans la vie / Il me l'a dit, m'a jurĂŠ pour la vie
He's the one for me / And I for him in life / He told me so, he vowed for life
I'm extremely normal about the glimpses and hints of Izzy and Ed's pre-show relationship this season. I really need to know if Ed gave him that ring he that always wears on his neck please and thank you Con.
Et dès que je l'aperçois / Alors je sens en moi / Mon coeur qui bas
And as soon as I felt it / I felt within me / My heart beating
Izzy Hands I'm love you please someone put it in Con's contract that he sing every single episode from now on.

Happy Birthday to the inimitable Con O’Neill. In celebration, I’d like to share some select filth I have saved to my notes documenting my decent into Izzy Hands brainrot, Val simp, and broken shell of a man. Please enjoy.
:readmore:
April 2022, after watching the glorious Val compilation video
“Oh no
Oh no
Oh no
This can’t be happening
This can’t be happening
Oh no
Fuck fucking fuck shitfuck
Oh no he’s a top
A short mean top
Con. Con we can’t keep doing this Con
Oh no
Oh no
Oh no
I can feel it happening in my brain
Oh Con we’re really in it now
Well fuck me I’m in love”
“The filmography of Con O’Neill got me acting unwise”
“Who needs cocaine when I can watch compilation fancams of Con O’Neill”
May 2022
“He be Neilling on my Con until I O”
“I want Val to put me on my knees and use me like a Hoover”
“Edward should give Izzy another tattoo but this time on his inner thigh for slut reasons. I think we should get to watch it happen.”
June 2022
If Izzy Hands (17) had access to Olivia Rodrigo album’s Sour I think it would fix him.
July 2022
AU where Edward is a vampire and Stede is a werewolf like Viago and Anton wwdits style. Izzy is Ed’s familiar. He’s also a vampire. Ed turned him one time after almost getting him killed and was worried Iz would leave him once he “got what he wanted”. Vampire Izzy wakes up newly transformed, thrilled that now he can serve Edward ✨ Forever ✨. He’s completely insane just like all familiars.
August 2022
Izzy Hands’ pussy is like Rice Krispies. He snap crackle pop when you add milk 😉

the thing about izzy is he calls ed "edward" but ed calls him "izzy" and you cannot tell me that nickname predates ed. ed gave him that. and the thing is, The Thing Is izzy allowed it. diminutive affectionate nickname from his captain. the guy who he needs to treat him like garbage, the man he is batshit in love with so has to treat him like garbage because he has sunk cost fallacy'd himself out of having anything good, this vicious circle of a dynamic where they both encourage each other to be terrible but because they care. they care!!! they have both chosen shite coping mechanisms & now they're enabling each other & they think it's a good thing they think this is as close to tenderness as they can get. and yet.
and yet! ed calls him izzy. other people mock izzy behind his back but ed doesn't. ed listens to him, trusts him. they're circling kindness perpetually and scrabbling away on purpose and they don't have to, and now ed's realised that, and izzy hates him for it the way you hate your drinking buddy who gets sober. we were supposed to be miserable together.
and that's why in s2, after he works everything out with stede, ed shld aggressively angrily pin izzy against a wall, and then kiss him softly. and just keep doing that whenever izzy tries to start shit

Things about Izzy Hands that I obsess over:
the way he melted when Ed said, "I need you here," as though that were the most tender thing Ed was capable of. The way he found out through Stede, who acted innocently & without malice & holds no blame here, that it was merely the most tender thing Ed was capable of with him
the way he was holding his hand to a candle flame as he told Ed that he told Stede "Blackbeard desires your company." Telling the audience of his own fascination with pain, linking that fascination with desire and Blackbeard's company, and literally playing with fire as he tries to manipulate Ed for his benefit
the way his enraged expression collapses into something far more complex when the tip of Stede's knife presses into his cheek. How many times do you think Ed did something similar to him
the fact that for years he likely did define himself as the monster Ed needed, the enforcer who created the structure upon which Ed could build the legend of Blackbeard, and now all that was going away
his slow descent into insanity—"I do the things you can't do" shifting away from a sign of loyalty & devotion, and turning into a sign of selfish, controlling desperation
"ooOOooh daaaAAAAaaaddy"

Blackbeard’s seeming unwillingness to intervene during Izzy and Stede’s duel really bothered me.  At first, I interpreted it purely as “he doesn’t want Stede to die but he can’t help him because pirate honor or whatever” but now I think its actually more to do with the fact he grew up in abusive household. He tries to stop it but he very quickly disengages when he gets push back from Izzy. He slowly starts edging away as soon as Izzy and Stede start verbally engaging with each other..if you watch he edges all the way to the other side of the boat.  Seeing two people he cares about in an argument makes him revert back to his childhood powerlessness. He can’t do anything but watch helplessly because that is the survival strategy he adopted for this situation when he was a kid.
The show does focus a lot on how Stede is still motivated/haunted by his own childhood trauma, so I don’t think its a coincidence that this scene happened right after we learned that Ed grew up in an abusive household.

So I am low key high key low key HIGH KEY obsessed with the idea of Izzy having a very reluctant crush on Stede ever since their first encounter that just keeps growing. Like, in that first encounter Stede jabs a knife in Izzy’s face, gives Izzy that crazy eyed look, and makes Izzy submit to his demands. Knowing Izzy after watching the whole season, isn’t that all kinda what he’s into????? Not to even mention that Stede does all this with his chest exposed. And then Izzy looks at Stede like THIS
Tumblr media
WHAT IS THIS FACE???? Admiration? Contempt? Both???
So Izzy has that encounter with Stede and is maybe like “I think i felt something flutter back there, that’s bad.” but tells Edward about the encounter anyway. Then Edward sends Izzy out to fetch Stede and Izzy asks “Can’t I just send the boys” cause he doesn’t want to see Stede again to possibly confirm the flutter. But he finds Stede, then Stede calls him “Iggy” disrespectfully and Izzy knows he’s in too damn deep already, so he leaves and lies to Edward that Stede knowingly told Blackbeard to go suck eggs in hell, hoping it will get Edward to stop caring or maybe just kill Stede.
But of course then he ends up on Stede’s ship and my thought is he’s freaked out to see Edward change for Stede, cause is that what’s gonna happen to him? Izzy is disgusted with his feelings for Stede bc Stede is everything that a man isn’t supposed to be in Izzy’s eyes. Izzy is so damn afraid of not being a real man that he doesn’t even want to associate himself with someone like Stede Bonnet, much less love him. So he tries to leave only to be stopped by Edward with the promise of becoming captain, and then he later insists Edward follow through with killing Stede like he promised.
And then Izzy challenges Stede to a duel and passes up two initial chances to stab him (though maybe that’s just duel rules.) Also holy shit how he must’ve felt about getting slapped in the ass by Stede’s sword?? Absolutely loving it but also hating that he loved it?

Because I watched the second half of OFMD in a fevered haze of ah shit I’m really into this aren’t I, the episodes kinda blurred together and I didn’t remember until a rewatch that the Kraken conversation and the duel between Stede and Izzy happen not only on the same night, but literally right after each other.
So you’re Ed Teach aka Blackbeard and what starts off as a silly little night of community theater with DIY amputation suddenly takes a turn into trauma flashback land and then you’re in a bathtub telling this guy you’ve known for two weeks but are already falling in love with about your deepest darkest trauma AND in the same conversation telling him you had a plan to murder him that night and he’s like eh let’s just forget about the murder part and he comforts you about the trauma part and when you’ve pulled yourself together from that you go outside and the person who probably has known you best and longest out of anyone in your life challenges your new crush to a duel in which he is almost certainly going to kill him, which you can’t bear to watch but can’t make yourself stop, except your new crush remembers that trick you showed him one (1) time in Homoerotic Stabbing 101 and he executes it perfectly and you end up having to kick your most trusted confidante off the ship but you’re also so into your new crush for pulling that off and very nearly kiss him right there on the deck before remembering he’s impaled and you would be so down for a tender wound-bandaging session right now except. No one can unstick him from the mast.
Like what a fucking wild night on the Revenge that was.

why does that scene where stede and ed first meet on the spanish ship feel like the “i came very close to death and hallucinated that the person speaking to me is an angel” trope but in this case the angel in question was wearing black leather

"izzy the spewer" was foreshadowing actually for s2 when ed and stede reunite and kiss and izzy is just in the background of the shot, throwing up over the side of the ship
