he begins to speak and momentarily, korine wishes that she had joined faye in her casino escapade.   poker —  or gambling in general — wasn’t her strong suit but it was certainly better than whatever conversation spike hoped to inspire her to.  sob story ... ?   he really did lack manners.

while korine was all too aware that merely minding her own business ( biding her time, really ) wasn’t enough to keep her on the ship she also hadn’t expected him to speak on it so quickly.   all the other’s seemed to have accepted her presence much faster.   

in fact ... they all had began to grow on her tremendously despire her short time aboard.   faye, with her past cut away felt like a step closer to normalcy that perhaps korine would be able to replicate. ed served as a reminded that she wasn’t alone in her search.  and jet ... well, jet was simply a mystery still.   one that they both seemed equally uninterested in unraveling.  

a long moment passes as she finally decides to look up and towards him, her cards abandoned for now.   the squeaking fan he had yet to fix filling the silence as she decides to take her time responding.   “   ... is this your way of asking for money?   ”   not like she had an abudence of it, just like everyone other lost soul on the ship, but unlike the other’s she held no particular attachment to what she did have.   however:  korine wouldn’t let him get what he wanted so easily.   “   say please.   ”   the smile absent from her lips clearly shining in her eyes as she continues to observe him.   whatever spike was truly trying to get at would have to wait — either until she was in the mood or he backed her into a corner.

the fans are loose, spike groans to himself, watching the way the blades wobble and creak precariously above his seat. another repair, another stack of woolongs drained from his account, another straw on the proverbial camel's back. it's enough that bounty heads have been far-and-few between recently. too many hunters and not enough heads. and it's enough that his ship has somehow become a safe house, adding three more uninvited mouths to feed in the blink of an eye.

he's at least afforded a moment of respite. faye skipped off to the nearest casino, apparently stricken with terrible boredom. ( what she does with her money isn't any of his business as long as she doesn't touch his. ) ed and ein trailed after her, as they are wont to do. and jet—patient, tentative jet—has been holed up in his corner of the ship obsessing over the health and wellness of his stupid little bonsai trees, whose leaves have apparently been dropping like flies. it's how spike found himself idle, and unoccupied, and sitting in the living room staring at the ceiling with the ship's newest tenant.

spike could probably count on his hands the number of times korine, koko as ed affectionately insisted, has spoken to him from the moment ed walked her onto the ship like it was her own. she either had a story she didn't want to tell, or there was no story at all. or maybe she just hated him, given the way she avoided eye contact and brushed past him like he never existed.

or perhaps she's just as lost and clueless as the rest of them, adrifting without an anchor, but unfortunately lost and clueless doesn't pay the bills, put food on the table, or cover annoying ship repairs. seemingly all at once, spike's internal monologuing comes to a head, and in his frustration he frowns, straightening abruptly to look up at her. she hasn't so much as startled, hasn't bothered to look up at him from the playing cards she shuffles deftly in her hands; even now, she's so bafflingly unperturbed.

" so.... " he starts, shifting in his seat and clearing his throat. " if you're not here to rob us or kill us, what are you hanging around for? " this isn't a charity, he almost adds before thinking better of it. between the two of them, his voice is nearly too loud, and he's too aware of the tinny way it echoes through the silence. " or if you've got some kind of sob story, i can tell you right now you're not the only one. "

          ❛ are you sure? you were shaking a bit. ❜  fingers continue to wander, to touch, to press against korine in every sensitive spot thana can remember. their smile is like a snake; devouring the sight of her, melting. the concern is genuine, but the overstimulation was intentional. they press a kiss to her lips, then her shoulder.
