relatedly the idea of the knight as carol's memory of dess is really sad for Kris if they haven't realized. your friend has become this thing of darkness and pain that doesn't seem to recognize any of the jokes and memories you shared. all it clearly remembers is that you killed it.

in 5 years when deltarune is complete and people think back on the fandom like they did with undertale and finally say "man, can you believe people were blaming the single mother getting fucking stalked by her ex", i will be dead in a ditch in Moldova after my mysterious disappearance several months prior. but i will be RIGHT

It's so wild when people dismiss the idea that like, Dess is the knight or similar theories with a ton of evidence on the basis that it's "too obvious". Like. I know Undertale had a lot of twists and unexpected reveals, but Undertale's plot twists were great because they made perfect sense in retrospect, and were thematically consistent with what the game was about. If Rudy was the knight or whatever, that would be. A twist I guess. It would also be uncharacteristically dumb, lazy writing from Toby Fox. It would just be shock value that relies on you accepting that literally everything established about the character was a lie from the moment you met them.
#calling dess obvious is crazy#you hardly even know about her unless you go out of your way to piece things together! she’s only alluded to so far! COME ON!!!#tobys plots arent just made to confuse and trick redditors#give him more credit as a writer and storyteller

Recently finished chapter 4 and unfiltered deltarune to see what everyone else is saying and dessknight is tripping me up a little – my brother and I both thought it being Carol was fairly obvious, but neither of us are skilled enough gamers to reach any of the secret bosses (could NOT score above a B in the c3 minigames because we just kept getting hit lol) so I'm open to my mind being changed. What's the evidence?
Flowey parallels (compare the girl in the code's messages to Flowey describing when he first woke up after death)! When she summons her sword it looks like a baseball bat for a few seconds! When it runs it looks like a ball! The Shadow Mantle protects again dark/STAR attacks! The poem in the book in the library that leads to the chapter 4 egg room talks about a "fallen STAR crying rivers that produce glass"! shadow crystals are glass! you get a shadow crystal by beating the knight and chipping a piece of its blade off! kris and the knight mirror each other in a lot of poses and postures and seem to be in cahoots! we know kris thought dess was really fucking cool when they were a kid! also carol was at the manor after kicking kris and susie out, when kris and susie enter the church dark world the knight is already there waiting for them!
does that convince you?
#visual storytelling leads to dess for the knight yeah#though the details regarding carol cant just be a red herring toby doesnt just put details to troll ppl#dess knight & carol phone voice is my current read on things#because if carol isn’t phone voice what the hell was her deal in that sequence. why give her red text#when referring to kris in the sequence firmly showing the difference between kris and soul

Do you know where people are getting the idea that the divorce was recent? In my own playthrough of the game I've come to the conclusion that it happened a while ago. I just keep seeing people SAY it's recent? But I don't know where that idea is coming from. My assumption of it being a while ago comes from what qc says at the diner, with the divorce being one of the 'things' she alludes to happening.
i think people assume the divorce must be recent because asgore is so desperate to bring things "back to normal" in time for asriel's return from college, and if this is his first year away, that means the separation must have happened after he left.
personally my read is that their marriage has been strained and doomed to fail ever since dess' disappearance, but they only finalized a formal separation after asriel was out of the picture.

basically my take on Asgore is like
-carol has him hired to keep an eye on him, since he has part of the bunker code and could be dangerous with Info. maybe sometimes she dispatches him to do minor tasks for her, but nothing that clearly ties into fountains etc
-he has caught on that there is a plan, there is something supernatural going on, etc, but he does Not actually know the specifics. he's been using time working at the holiday house to break into rooms and hunt for clues (which may be how he got the shard, if Carol had one at home)
-whatever conclusions he's come to are Fatally Flawed and his attempt to act on them will cause disaster.
