i remember when i was a child internet safety was like "if you even hint at the country you live in, you're gonna get kidnapped and murdered", and nowadays it is encouraged or even necessary to give corporations every single personal detail if you want to use anything because if they can't sell your information they cry so hard they throw up

ok, little rant about a use of a leitmotif in les mis that i think has slipped under most people's radars!
so you the know the police leitmotif? the "tell me quickly what's the story/who saw what and why and where/let him give a full description/let him answer to javert!" tune that appears whenever somebody gets arrested?
now turn your ear to javert's suicide, specifically the "i am reaching but i fall/and the stars are black and cold" part. it took me a while to notice, but this whole section of the song is just a snippet of the arrest leitmotif:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but he never completes it. the snippet repeats and repeats. try as he might, he finds himself unable to sing the same old song of Justice and Law and Righteousness and Order. he's like a jammed cassette player spitting out the same second of music over and over and over and over again, unable to follow his old ways, but unable to let them go. he's stuck, but he will keep throwing himself against the walls of the cage.
javert is desperately trying to run on his old tracks of thought, but, as vicky h puts it, he experiences "the derailment of a soul, the shattering of an integrity irresistibly propelled in a straight line and dashed against God".
: )

so there's a bit of discourse happening on twitter about whether or not namgi is a 'rarepair':
Tumblr media Tumblr media
naturally i had to investigate (i'm namgi-biased), and what i found out was actually pretty interesting. unfortunately, my post went completely unnoticed over there, so i decided to post it here also (granted, twitter was not the right platform for a long analytical post like this, mea culpa). here it is:
okay SO. i got curious and had a look at the numbers on AO3:
Tumblr media
interestingly namgi is right in the middle of bts ships in terms of popularity, ranking 11th out of 21 total ships (with 8'917 fics). however, they're only 64 fics ahead of the ship at rank 12 (namkook) but 557 fics behind the one ahead of them at rank 10 (jinkook), so namgi has quite a big gap to close before they're safely in the top half. now being in the bottom half doesn't necessarily mean you're a rarepair.
fanlore defines a rarepair as a ship that "is not featured in many fanworks and makes up a only small proportion of the overall total." the least popular bts pairing is jinmin, which is present in only about 1.6% of all bts fics (these percentages are a bit fuzzy though because searching for any given ship tag within the bts fandom tag usually yields slightly fewer results than the ship tag by itself). the most popular ship is taekook at 18%. namgi comes in at around 3.8%, which is much closer to the least popular than the most popular pairing. but is that a small enough percentage to be considered a rarepair?
i think one reason why this is controversial is because namgi's status is ambivalent in more than one way. not only are they exactly in the middle in terms of overall ranking but there's an additional element of tension: namgi is the least popular ship involving yoongi (!) but the second most popular ship involving namjoon. this of course means that all other yoongi ships make the top 10. by contrast, namjoon is present in only one top 10 ship, that being namjin. namjoon and yoongi are basically opposites in terms of shipping popularity and there may be a sort of tug-of-war situation going on where yoongi's popularity pulls the ship up in the ranking while namjoon's lack of popularity (which i do not agree with btw) has kept it in the bottom half so far. now, i don't have the numbers regarding the growth progression of namgi, but just based on my impression it does seem like they are gaining popularity (and i hope that is the case).
in conclusion, namgi is a really interesting pairing precisely because they're in this weird ambiguous place that makes people fight about whether or not they're a rarepair. (if you made it this far, drop your favourite namgi fic in the replies <3)
