Medieval grave slabs at Kilmartin Church, dating from the 13th to 18th century. Bit of a throwback to Christmas but my dad and I spent Christmas Eve wandering around Kilmartin Glen, one of the most atmospheric places I’ve ever been. Kilmartin Glen has an incredible concentration of Neolithic and Bronze Age standing stones, cairns and cup and ring marks. When a mist descends it’s positively magical. I have a few posts ready with photos of the glen that I will post soon! #icu_scotland #ig_cameras_unite #scotspirit #scotlandsites #scotland_greatshots #visitscotland #uk_greatshots #explore_britain #ukscenery #scenicbritain #topukphoto #wonderlustscotland #drivescotland #igscotland #scotlandincredible #meanwhileinscotland #scottishcollective #travellingscotland #scotland #scottishhistory #hiddenscotland #historicscotland #localhistory #history #historygram #historyiseverywhere #historynerd #heritage #historylovers #historicalplaces (at Kilmartin Glen) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxVUX96n-HK/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=11z5cevk8ur8s

Hi everyone! I’ve been a bit AWOL for a while as I get my life back on track and my mental health back to a good place. For a while I’ve been at a bit of a loose end, unable to write, barely able to take photos (and photography is my true love!) and entirely unable to focus on this Instagram and my blog. But I’m sort of back! I’ve written about my trip to the Rollright Stones on my blog. It’s not great but I’m trying to get back into it slowly and I’ve realised that as well as history, I really love writing about nature so I am trying to do that more too, terrible or not! Anyway, hope you like the photos. It’s a really neat place and I recommend a visit! Just not at midsummer (which I did last year) unless you’re there FOR midsummer. I accidentally went on the solstice and goodness me it was busy. #history #historygram #historyiseverywhere #historynerd #heritage #historygirls #ancienthistory #historical #historicalplace #bronzeage #historicalplaces #folklore #myth #legend #oralhistory #localhistory #justgoshoot #exploretocreate #visualsoflife #agameoftones #artofvisuals #liveauthentic #englishheritage #standingstones #neolithic #ancient #oxfordshire #nature #seemorehistoricbritain (at Rollright Stones) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxQYhWFH8cG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2gv2ko6jna70

The Rollright Stones
When I first began this blog, the first of my Big Days Out was towards Oxfordshire. I went to see the Rollright Stones, and the Enstone Hoar Stone, but foolishly had planned it for the summer solstice, so it was exceptionally busy. Today I decided to head back, and see it in a more peaceful setting.
In contrast to my previous visit I initially had the stones to myself, their presence beside me…

I’ll have to go back to Oxford and take my actual camera but I love the quirky little buildings. This one apparently dates from around the 15th century, but was modified in the 17th and 19th centuries. This is easily one of the places I’ve been to most throughout my life. Wandering through a forest of magnificent fir trees (including one that was one of Britain’s tallest trees, which sadly blew over in strong winds in January 2017) you eventually reach Ossian’s Hall, and the view over the Black Linn Falls, where in the autumn you can watch oodles of salmon making the leap up the falls to get to their spawning ground. The Hermitage was designed as a pleasure ground for the 18th century dukes of Atholl. The folly was originally built in 1757, and, while it was originally quite plain, was late decorated with mirrors and sliding panels a couple of decades, and it was then that it became connected with Ossian. The mirrors were impressive, and created the illusion of water on all sides, sometimes seeming to defy gravity. Famous visitors to the site include Queen Victoria and William and Dorothy Wordsworth. The hall was partially blown up in 1869 (possibly as a protest against the Duke’s toll at the nearby Dunkeld Bridge) but is now back in operation. - #icu_scotland #ig_cameras_unite #scotspirit #scotlandsites #scotland_greatshots #visitscotland #uk_greatshots #explore_britain #ukscenery #scenicbritain #topukphoto #wonderlustscotland #drivescotland #igscotland #scotlandincredible #meanwhileinscotland #scottishcollective #travellingscotland #scotland #scottishhistory #hiddenscotland #historicscotland #localhistory #history #historygram #historyiseverywhere #historynerd #heritage #historylovers #historicalplaces (at The Hermitage Woodland Walk) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrN8jpVjrQm/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=sk1eda15cfep

Standing stone at Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre, Perthshire. Once believed to mark the grave of one of the heroes who fell at the battle of Mons Graupius, it is known by some as the Roman stone, but is more likely to be far older than that. The rock has a few cup marks on its surface. - - #scotland #scottishhistory #scottishhighlands #standingstone #historicscotland #localhistory #historicalplace #history #historygram #historyiseverywhere #historynerd #heritage #historylovers #ancienthistory #historical #historicalplaces #icu_scotland #ig_cameras_unite #scotspirit #seemorehistoricbritain #scotland_greatshots #visitscotland #hiddenscotland #wonderlustscotland #drivescotland #igscotland #scotlandincredible #meanwhileinscotland #scottishcollective #travellingscotland (at Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpMRTByARUt/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=170oomclca9qs

I will do a longer post with this later but as I’ve been horrifically neglecting this account I thought I might post some things as and when I see them even without a post with more information! I’m currently on the Isle of Arran in Scotland and one of the places I’ve passed is Torrylin cairn, which was used for burial 5000 years ago #history #scotland #visitscotland #scotspirit #ancienthistory #historicscotland #culture #histogram #exploremore #exploretocreate #historyfacts #historylovers #historyinpictures #historyfans (at Kilmory, Arran) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnJ9WaPlrtM/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1w6z3cy45okz2

St Oswald's Church, Widford
St Oswald’s Church, Widford
Situated in the middle of a farmer’s field, this little Grade II listed church is a gem. The earliest church is thought to have been built in the late Saxon/early Norman period, though it was discovered in the 20th century that it was built on a Roman structure, possibly a bath house due to the presence of a hypocaust.
The church allegedly held the remains of St Oswald for a night in AD 642,…

Nine Maidens Stone Circle, Devon, England
This stone circle is located near the village of Belstone which is on the edge of Dartmoor National Park’s north moor. The nine standing stones surround a Bronze Age burial site. Legend states that a group of nine young ladies were discovered dancing on a Sunday and thus turned to stone.

Necropolis of Montessu, Sardinia
The necropolis is located on the southern side of the hill of Sa Pranedda, near Villaperuccio. Set within a large natural amphitheater, it has about forty domus de janas (pre-Nuragic chamber tombs) and is one of the largest and most important archaeological sites of Sardinia. The site dates back to the pre-Nuragic period (3rd millennium BC) and it was in use for a millennium by the peoples of the Ozieri, Abealzu-Filigosa, Monte Claro, Bell Beaker and Bonnanaro cultures.

Din Lligwy Romano-Celtic Settlement, Anglesey, 31.7.17. The site sits on top of a raised ledge of Stone, incorporating several stone based roundhouse and rectangular buildings within a walled compound. The settlement features a blacksmith’s building and several cattle shelters. This site made a great impression upon me as a child and I still love walking through the trees to see it even today. It is very easy to imagine people living here approximately 1500 years ago.
