Texturing took a few tries to make it cartoonish. The model has been rigged in this image. An earlier version (I didnt get a photo sorry), had an error of the rig flipping the knees backwards because it was too straight. However that was fixed now, but the knees still bend weirdly but I believe it was the models design. The model is rigged and works though! so its all done!

The first image is the remade UV wrap, however it has issues with the hair clipping through the hat and head. The second image is updated. Polys reduced and the UV more evenly placed on the model! I’m much happier with it now as it works and looks good to me.

This is the intial pass at the UV unwrap with a completed model. I didn’t get any progress images of the head however, it was remade several times as it broke a lot. The UV is quite messy and needs revising, some cuts on it doesn’t make sense either

Torso has been mirrored ! and the legs have been attached. The torso was extended down to create the end of the coat. There might be too many polys on the legs and arms so that will need revising.

Lot more progress! I reddid the models torso and mirrored it so it was symmertical. Made the arm and after several attempts attacthed it to the torso. The hand took a few attempts too however im fairly sure I got correct topology for it. Have yet to attach the leg to the torso.

KNB217 - Digital Creatures
Assessment 1 - Low Polygon Count Character Modelling and Rigging for Animation
Task 1: Synopsis of the fairy tale and characater profle
Chosen Fairy Tale: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
The book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has become quite a popular fairy tale and book amongst children and adults. Written by Lewis Carroll it follows a young girl named Alice through her adventure in Wonderland. It opens with Alice and her sister reading, then a white rabbit comes by. Alice, instantly curious follows this white rabbit down a rabbit hole and finds herself in the surreal world of Wonderland. She encounters a wide variety of strange characters and creatures; a reoccurring character is the Cheshire Cat. The Cat advises her to attend a tea party where she meeds the Mat hatter and March  Hare. The Hatter attempts to cut Alice’s hair, but she escapes. Soon enough Alice finds herself in a Garden with servants painting roses red in fear of the Queen of Hearts discovering white ones. The Queen orders a court meeting after discovering someone stole her tarts and Alice is called to testify. Alice knows nothing about the crime and the Queen loses her temper and calls for Alice’s execution. Alice wakes up just in time, next to her sister, and realises it was all a dream.’
Character Profile: The Hatter
The Mad Hatter is a reoccurring character Alice interacts with. He is first introduced at the Mad Tea Party along with the March Hare and the Door Mouse. In the books his behaviour towards Alice is erratic and often rude, even trying to cut her hair. His madness is based on the history of hatters; they often needed to work with toxic materials which sent them insane. The hatters personality, when summed up is smart, erratic, and insane.

Walt Disney
Walt Disney was born a Canadian farmer and business person, who eventually moved to Kansas with his family. He joined the Red Cross at 16 in WW1 and worked in France, but later returned to Kansas. He seemed jobs within the film industry but failed a few times, eventually moving to Hollywood. He was met with more failure until he created the concept of Mickey Mouse, he gave the Character voice whilst Ub Iwerks drew Mickey Mouse. After that Disney’s success grew over time, with a few hiccups and bumps, but he and his company grew to be one of the most successful companies today.

Ladislas Starwicz
Ladisla Starewicz is a Russian Stop-Motion animator who created nearly 50 films in his lifetime, 1882-1965. To most of the recent generations, like myself, we aren’t aware of his works, or even who he was but in fact he played an important ole in stop motion animation.
Tumblr media
We associate stop motion with film makers like Tim Burton and his famous movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, or the Fantastic Mr Fox mood, directed by Wes Anderson. These filmmakers would have surely taken inspiration from Starewicz’s films as they are quite surreal and unworldly.

Winsor McCay
Winsor McCay (1869-1934) is a famous American animator that i wasn’t aware existed before today. He is somewhat forgotten today by young aspiring animators, such as myself.

(Image of Winsor McCay, Winsor McCay. (2019, March 05). Retrieved March 11, 2019, from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winsor_McCay )
McCay started out creating comics called Little Nemo in newpapers. These were popular among fans and it soon stemmed into a career in animation for him.
McCay has created several animations and comics that have influenced creators and companies such as Disney and Dreamworks. These animations include Gertie the Dinosaur 1914, Little Nemo 1990, How a Mosquito Operates 1912, and many more. He still influences animation today and without him the animation industry may not be as well known or successful as it is.

KNB125 Wk 1- Charlie Bowers
What did I watch?
a stop animation by Charley Bowers called ‘It’s a Bird’. It was in black and white and made during the 1930’s.
Tumblr media
What was it about?
The short ‘silent comedy’ film was about a man who had travelled to an area where a ‘metal eating bird’ was supposed to have originated, and he was determined to capture it. He encounters a worm that can talk; its behaviour is typical of slapstick comedy in that it is a very physical style of movement when it encounters the bird. The bird is captured and taken away where it then lives with the man. The bird eats more metal and then hatched an egg which turns into a car.
How did it make me feel?
The film was entertaining for me, despite its surreal animation and character behaviours. As a child I used to watch a lot of Tim Burton’s stop-motion films and avidly loved them, so this film was nothing entirely new to me. It made me feel nostalgic despite such a different time period it was created in, but I have much appreciation for the work that goes into stop animation. The flow and design of characters created fascinates me as you can make the believable whilst still creating an obscure and surreal picture.
Initial ‘gesture’ sketch

The initial gesture sketch above is of a classmate.
Character created from initial sketch
Tumblr media
The character sketch above is supposed to be a ‘drowning/drowned’ girl of sorts. I feel it was poorly executed as I couldn’t see or picture a character from such bland sketches. Improved time and effort would yield better results in future perhaps.
