Writing Advice #4
Some of y’all are sitting on genuinely good story ideas and trashing them because “it’s not complex enough.” Because it doesn’t have a twist ending or a spreadsheet full of plot threads.
But Simple isn’t the enemy. Boring is, and a story is only boring when it forgets to FEEL.
We have been emotionally devastated by stories with the barest bones of a plot, something like “Boy and dog become friends. Then sad happens.” Or “Boy meets girl. They hold pinkies under the table.” Tears. “Stranger gives someone a sandwich.” Existential crisis.
It’s not about complexity, not really guys, it’s about impact.
Simple stories give your characters room to be human, they give your readers room to care. They don’t bury the heart under eight subplots and a riddle only your Reddit fandom can decode. You don’t need a chosen one and a revolution to earn a reader’s tears (I promise). You just need something that matters.
So please stop apologizing because your story is “just” about a guy who’s been writing love letters to someone he thought was dead.
That’s not “just.” That’s everything.
And if anyone tells you it’s not enough? Write it anyway, and go tell them to fuck off.

Spent tonight at a local short film festival. One of the shorts was made by two 12 year olds in their backyard and it was the best short of the entire night

It's so funny that people are snobs about romance books because I think they're missing out. Granted, sometimes writing that isn't to my taste makes me feel some way and I have DNF'ed a fair few, but some of the books that meant the most to me were like, fun contemporary romances, or romantasy, or even "dark" romance (I say "dark" in quotation marks because I'm talking about the ones that have healthy relationships with dark themes or situations, not the ones that romanticize abuse; I cannot believe I even have to say this). The Ruinous Love trilogy is one of my favorite series of all time and Leather & Lark in particular felt written for me (down to Lark and Sloane's comfort movie being Constantine, are you kidding me??????). Brynne Weaver is my QUEEN and I will read anything she writes. A Court of Mist and Fury carried me out of a time when my life was at a very very low point and Feyre was the first real time I saw a female character who got to be such a perfect balance of gentle and sexy and powerful. Meghan Quinn is my go-to when I wanna laugh my ass off and then cry at the cuteness of the "to be loved is to be known" moments. Kristen Granata writes about really sensitive topics without sensationalizing or romanticizing them, and her characters are often broken people finding themselves again. I just love the heart and soul these authors pour into their works to bring us joy and comfort and laughter.

If you haven't consumed Midst, you gotta consume Midst. It's so good. It's characterful. It's whimsical. It's dramatic. It's thoughtful. It has incredible audio and accessible transcripts and cool episode art. It has an old hound dog named Landlord (he survives. this is not a spoiler). You. Reading this. Get into Midst

idk why people are still trying to do "hear me out"s on tumblr
you could talk about wanting to fuck the space needle on here and people would still call you a poser for insisting on fucking "conventionally attractive architecture" as if that's a coherent, easily-recognizable category

a funny thing about having a Problematic Blorbo is that you'll periodically come across a post along the lines of "um let's not forget that [Blorbo] is a bad person..." listing their various crimes, and if you have a modicum of intellectual honesty you find yourself nodding along and saying yeah it's true... but it's the greyness of their character that makes them so compelling... At the same time though you have a little Saul Goodman in your ear going "your honor in their defense: who cares like omfgggg who caresssssss like come onnnnnn"
