June 2025
We just had thunderstorms coming through our way. We didn't get anything severe, just rain. But we're supposed to be seeing more coming all this week. Lucky us.

It's been very cloudy lately. Very stormy. May is our storm season.
Other places I've lived May is one of the best months weather-wise.
I want some sun.

The clouds have been so lovely and white and fluffy against these beautiful blue skies.
We really do have some wonderful weather this time of year.

Today is the start of our new life. We've been waiting a long time for this, and now that it's here I am no longer sure how to react. It's good news.

Holy mackinaw is it ever cold out there. Grey and wet still from the thunderstorm last night.
Good day to stay indoors and drink hot beverages.

The Hudsucker Proxy
I might've known this was a Coen brothers movie, and it is! My problem with the Coens is whether it's going to be a good Coens (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) or bad Coens (True Grit).
This is a good one, as long as you're down with the vibe. It's like their tack on a screwball 1950s comedy right down to the newsroom go-getter woman.
This isn't a comedy in the sense you'll laugh much, it's this broad slapstick with Tim Robbins energy. And the sets, the design, are marvellous. This movie is absolutely gorgeous to look at.
Is the story a bit hamfisted, oh brother is it.
Now that I've seen quite a few Coen brothers movies I think they're just making like subversive mainstream movies. And I dig it. It took me a while, but I dig their vibe.
This one gets a recommendation from me. I think especially if you love Tim Robbins because I love Tim Robbins both from the Shawshank Redemption as from that Dances with Wolves was in about baseball. I should probably edit that out.

Licorice Pizza (2021)
This is an at times frustrating and enjoyable movie. I almost turned it off during the restaurant scene (spoilers?). But then it hooked me in with the whole truck escapade and that guy in the jumpsuit.
I liked it. It was frustrating at times, but ultimately Gary made me pull for him, and Alana too, and it's a movie I kept on thinking about hours after watching it, and wishing my wife had watched it too so we could talk about it.
Kudos Paul Thomas Anderson.

Vibes (1988)
Silly movie about two people with extra-sensory abilities are roped into a scheme to find "the room of gold" in the mountains of Ecuador. It stars Jeff Goldblum and Cyndie Lauper as the two extra-sensorists and Peter Falk (not wearing a trenchcoat) as one of the treasure hunters.
It's a fun start but it begins to lose its steam towards the middle of the movie. There's not much steam between Lauper and Goldblum, and the jokes suddenly dry up and neither lead is compelling to bring it home with a dramatic turn.
Still, fun little confection. I quite liked the flute music and the scenery was lovely.
