“What crawled up your ass and died, all of the sudden? Is our Jeanbo jealous?”

It took them some time to get back to that level of banter. At the very beginning, Reiner had been so stressed by the idea of insulting him in any way, Jean had to work hard to get him to relax and to talk back like a regular human being.

Jean knew Braun felt indebted to him after the Rumbling; felt like he had to make up for the sorrow he had caused. So, he followed Jean wherever he went, usually as a completely mute companion who only chose to grunt in agreement whenever Jean actually asked for his opinion.

He became Jean’s shadow during the ambassador meetings, shopping trips and late night walks — as well as during the months spent working at refugee camps; taking care of the survivors, contributing to the dream of a peaceful future, planting trees and picking up whatever human remains they came across in the areas destroyed by the Rumbling.

Reiner’s sorrowful expression, puppy eyes and extremely annoying tendency to apologize for every little thing pissed Jean off even more than his recklessness and complete lack of regard for his own well-being. The number of times he had yelled at Reiner for hurting himself by accident, equaled the number of times he yelled at him for apologizing for hurting himself by accident.
