The Reptile House was always one of my favourite places when I was a kid, I can't believe it took me this long to get back in there! It's almost exactly how I remember it too, there's just some more updated signs~
Freshwater Crocodile (Crocodylus johnstoni) Phillippine Crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis) Rhinoceros Iguanas (Cyclura cornuta cornuta) King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) Veiled Chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus)

Is that a dinosaur? Nope: It’s the rhinoceros iguana (Cyclura cornuta)! This large, heavy-bodied lizard’s name refers to the horns on its head. These horns, which are found on both males and females, are used in combat among males as well as display behavior like head-bobbing. This animal, which can grow to an impressive 4 ft (1.2 m) long, is found only on the Caribbean island Hispaniola. Its diet consists primarily of plants and insects, but it may occasionally feed on carrion.

HiveWing. Overcomplicated. But also not?
Joy and Tui, y'all cooked, I just put my own spin on it.
Details and explanation below.
Otherwise, next week are LeafWings! See you then!
More overcomplicated dragons.
I thought I had fun with the RainWing.
I was wrong. This was FUN.
Of all the ones I've done this design is nearly identical to the original. I'm not saying that to toot my own horn, it just somehow came out like that because I found the perfect references (and avoided altering the skull too much lol). Let's talk about them!
First, an unlikely one: iguanas. I originally picked them for their spines, but when I saw their eyes and large jaw scale (or whatever it is) I knew I'd found the new reptile base for the HiveWings. I also included the little snout and under-the-chin spikes they have; it just fits perfectly for a beetle-and wasp inspired dragon.
Speaking of beetles and wasps: I took heavy inspiration for the HiveWing's 'beak' from wasp mandibles. I love the way the mouth looks originally and wanted to preserve and exaggerate it. So, when creating the beak, I combined the jagged jaws of wasps with the curved beak of an African fish eagle. To top it off I referenced the rhinoceros beetle (obviously) for the horn on the nasion.
(The nasion is a point where your nose meets your forehead between your eyes). The HiveWing's horn isn't directly on it but I couldn't think of another word.
I actually wanted the entire head to have an insect-like feel, that's why the snout and forehead are built from large plates (once again referenced from rhino beetles).
Lastly, besides the lion-inspired teeth, an incredible animal called the nyala was responsible for the back horns. Whoever photographed that bull in that exact angle: thank you.
Let's see how badly I mess up the LeafWings next week. If you've read this far, perhaps let me know if you would like to see all of my personal headcanons for the LeafWings? For Alate Atta's Ascension I use a design where they have four wings and extra frills to look like leaves. I can do one closer to canon where they're more like a Pyrrhian tribe and another where they visually fit in with the other Pantalan tribes. Let me know!

Native to the beautiful Caribbean island of Hispaniola, the rhinoceros iguana is a massive and bizarre looking creature.  This threatened lizard varies in length from three to almost five feet with skin colors in shades of brown, dark green and gray.  These stately lizards receive their name from the pseudo-horn on their snout that resembles a horn that you would find on a rhinoceros.

I've been getting really into iguanas and their relatives. I never realized there were so many different species; do you have any favorites?
You may have figured out that we love lizards here at herpsandbirds, so yes i do definitely have some favorites...

My very big, rhinoceros iguana man, Santiago! He's fluent on the saxophone, hangs out with a jazz quintet, and is a smooth dude. That is...until his munchies get the better of him lol

!!!Seijoh Pet Headcanons!!!
Oikawa: He has a cat named "Fuji". He also doesn't like dogs because one bit him when he was younger so now he hates them.
Iwaizumi: He has a pet ferret named "Inu" for some reason... Inu has met at least everybody on the team and his favorite is Kyoutani, second is his own owner.
Hanamaki: Has a pet iguana named "Ana". Hanamaki always laughs when Oikawa comes to his house cause he's scared the shit of reptiles and Ana is an iguana so he's real scared of her.
Matsukawa: He has a pet goldfish named "Kiki". He got her about in his 1st year and he doesn't know she is still alive. It's a mystery in the Matsukawa household.
Watari: Watari doesn't have any pets because of his sister's allergies, but he is a pet person. He attracts pets like Kyoutani so whenever he and the team are out, all animals in the perimeter looks at him and start barking/meowing/whatever noises other animals make.
Yahaba: Has a pet rhinoceros beetle that is named "Gojo" because Yahaba's anime phase in middle school was very strong. Plus, apparently Watari is scared of bugs so he can scare him at any given time when he's at Yahaba's house.
Kindaichi: Has a pet turtle named "Mango" for some reason. And apparently Mango likes Kyoutani more than anybody in the world so yeah
Kunimi: Has a pet cat named "Storm". He's real grumpy and only let's certain people touch him.
Kyoutani:.... Where can I start..... dogs, bird, snake, horses, goats, pigs, koi fish, and many more. He has a farm that's owned by his aunt (he's from Spain and his aunt is rich) and she got him a farm with a lot of animals. Don't tell anyone, but his fav animal is his snake "Koi".

Animals of Java. This 17th-century artwork features a rhinoceros, an elephant, a tortoise and an iguana. These animals were observed during a Dutch voyage to the East Indies (Indonesia). The artwork is from 'Rerum et urbis Amstelodamensium historia' (1611), a history of Amsterdam by Dutch-Danish royal historiographer Johannes Isacius Pontanus (1571-1639). This book includes descriptions of the first Dutch voyage to the East Indies in 1595 by Cornelis de Houtman. Javan elephants went extinct by the end of the 18th century but some survived on Borneo.
From Middle Temple Library's early printed books collections
