sometime I wonder what happened to the big name fans from the old days, what they're up to today. Most of them haven't been online for years. Like where's St Fang of Boredom now? Does she still care about Maximum Ride? Is Fang still locked in her basement?

most of those old-school popular fans like Saint and Phoenix Fantastic and FangRules and Fangalicous08 seem to have moved on entirely, I wonder if they ever think about the books still

all i watch lately are documentaries about 9/11, and for these i have a two-tier way of judging quality before i commit:

1. is this some conspiracy theory dogshit? (check wikipedia or IMDb page, examine youtube channel it’s uploaded to; additionally when i say documentary i don’t mean “youtuber video essay”, i mean “somewhere like the BBC or National Geographic made this”)

2. does it look like it was filmed on a potato / was it uploaded multiple years ago? (apparently people like to run footage from 2001 through shitty upscalers before uploading to youtube*; there’s an obvious exception here for “interviews filmed post-2015 or so”, but if it’s from before then, it better look like i took my glasses off)

* i sadly did not save the comparison but i saw an extremely blatant side-by-side image where on the right you have “yup, that’s what footage from 2001 should look like” and on the left is Obvious Slop, it was incredible

also while im insomnia posting, the intense 9/11 interest is lasting longer than i thought it would

im slowly compiling a list of books and documentaries ive read or watched and would recommend

im also, depending on my health and available free time, going to try and write up a long post about Muslim or Arab victims, because while i have seen excellent posts memorializing those who were victims of Islamophobic attacks after 9/11, ive never seen a post discussing those who died on that day as a result of the attacks. which, imho, is an omission worthy of rectification

anyway if you have any specific questions about 9/11, i have the right kind of brain problems to — again, depending on health, im sorry but im very disabled — at least try and dig up info. like i wanna do a deep dive on the experiences of disabled people on 9/11, for example.

like i regularly go to a couple local stores run by Sikh families, and i worry about people in my Republican-dominated area being jerks to them

but in this specific situation i have the questionable privilege of being physically disabled (no one wants to be caught confronting a tiny disabled person), being white, and passing as a weird cis guy. and being a fellow customer, so i can’t get fired for telling someone “your behavior is unacceptable, and the owner wants you to leave. fuck off”

im far from being an internet tough guy, and have never been in a fight… i just enjoy my brief interactions with these folks and i want them to feel safe in the community we share

(when im at work i also interact with Muslims, Sikhs, as well as others who face anti-Muslim or anti-Arab hate. and the one time i would feel confident using the small amount of power i have at work would be if i were to use it to get someone ejected [and if possible, banned] from a venue for hate speech of any kind. i stay at my low-paying part-time job in part because i enjoy helping other people have a fun night out where they feel safe. and if i have a radio, i can go from someone telling me “this guy is being aggressive towards me because i am wearing a turban” to “that guy is getting marched outta here by like four people who take no shit” with one call.)

Bystander Intervention Training

so, the US just attacked Iran, and that is fucking terrible. Something we all need to think about right now is how we can stop the harassment and violence against Muslims and Arabs in the US that got so much worse in the early 2000s from happening again to people now.

To that end, I wanted to share some resources on Bystander Intervention. One of the biggest things I learned from training like this is that there are many ways to intervene, and they don't all involve putting yourself in front of the person who may harm you or others. It's ok if you feel intimidated by that because there are more ways to help! And once you do the training, it might not be so scary.

I took one of their trainings a few years ago (when the org was called Hollaback!) and it was really very good, they have trainings at multiple levels and focused on various topics. They also partner with other orgs to focus on specific issues (like anti-AAPI harassment and with CAIR Chicago for anti-Muslim harassment, etc.).
