It's actually weirder for a stallion figure to only have the suggestion of a sheath, rather than a fully sculpted sheath. By suggesting the sheath, you show that you've thought about its existence. Yet, by deliberately not sculpting it with the same level of detail as the rest of the horse, you suggest that there's something inappropriate (i.e. sexual) about animal genitals. By sculpting a vague bulge on a horse figure, and self-censoring the same way you would censor a human mannequin, you are unintentionally sexualizing animal genitals. And I think that's bad.

i prefer them to modern schleich, the sculpture and paint jobs are really good. recommend the 1:12 scale models as well (the pintaloosa up there), they are quite detailed!

hi hi i was wondering how do you feel about the collecta horse figurines?? im considering getting some and first i was thinking about getting some schleich but sadly the new ones look really bad :( collecta seems much nicer from what ive seen online, do you happen to know if they are in fact nice?? or are there maybe any other affordable brands available in the EU that i should look at? thank you horse expert <3

As for buying horses in the EU, check out German sellers like Modellpferdeversand, Spielzeug Guenstig, and Spielfigurenportal, they have a pretty big catalog! I haven't bought from them yet, so I can't personally vouch for them, but Modellpferddeversand is a trusted site in the model horse community, and the two other sites have a lot of positive reviews.

Modellpferdeversand has basically every horsey brand that they have in the US, so my affordable realistic recs are the usual: CollectA, WIA, Breyer Stablemates, and Schleich from the mid-2000s (they have retired Schleich on that site).

Are there actually Eighty Thousand (!!) different Schleich figures or does the numbering system skip around a bit?

Nah, the numbering is more like library categorization than chronology. All standard horses have the number #13xxx (though they're approaching #13999, so they're gonna have to get a new horse number soon). All playsets (and playset figures) have the number #41xxx or #42xxx. Bayala horses are #70xxx and magazine exclusive horses are #82xxx, #83xxx, #29xxxx, or #78xxxx (with the exception of one #634425). Exclusive horses have really messy numbering.

No horsey gifts for me this year, but my partner did crochet this hammock for my plushies (including my Sleipnir and Mudbray) so that's almost horse related? xD

So @lynati is out of town today and tomorrow, working, but she has been living her best life and embracing her desire to be surrounded by toy Breyer horses for the first time in 25 years, and is really just having a great time with it.

Unfortunately, a particular horsie, Hot Cocoa, who she had REALLY wanted sold out last week before she had a chance to get her. She thought she had more time, because some of the previous years' horsies are still in stock from past years.

Horf!

So Hot Cocoa was sold out, and she was very sad, and there were ZERO OF THEM anywhere else on the internet - this one was sold only through the Breyer website, and nobody had listed any on Ebay or Mercari. We set up some saved searches to try to get her later if she came up, probably at a terrible mark-up, but what else can you do?

Anyway, Lynati got a different, extra-fancy horse in the mail yesterday, and he's a very pretty boy with blues and golds and purples.

Lynati didn't have any others in this mold, but she brought him upstairs to show me yesterday when she got him in the mail, and I agreed as this was a very pretty horse and flipped him over because I was admiring how pretty the blue-fading-to-purple effect is, and I go "WOW. My god, they put a lot of effort into sculpting this horse's junk."

The fact this sculptor clearly spent hours and hours on this horse model, including what had to be rather a lot of time on the individual veining on the Horse Dick* is truly kind of impressive, but I also find it extremely funny in contrast with how pearl-clutchy some American Girl doll collectors get about even the implication that people may have had sex or might be naked at some point, ever. (There are a whole bunch of people get weird about the fact dolls like Kaya and Felicity don't come with underpants - because they wouldn't have worn them. In the 18th century. And, let me be clear, their bodies are just tube-shaped stuffed cloth with no anatomical detail whatsoever.)

*Lynati will I'm sure correct me that that is the "sheath" and testicles, but I am not a horse person and I am therefore comfortable referring to it as the horse's dick.

So today, I was relating to my friend @lylilorden my amusement at the contrast between American Girl doll people and the Breyer people with their lovingly-sculpted super-detailed Horse Genitals.

(Quoth Lyli, "and the breyer folks just. "these are ANIMALS and they FUCK"". Yes. Yes they are.)

And I'm looking for a picture of the Special Fancy Horse to show her, and then suddenly, at the bottom of the page on the Breyer website, where I see this:

So I call Lynati in a tizzy because this is clearly a Horf-Collecting Emergency, and the horf is now on the way to our house. The day is saved! And I wouldn't have been on the Breyer website if I hadn't been talking to Lyli about the other horse's magnificent . . . endowments.

Allow me to introduce you to the model horse hobby. I collect Breyer model horses and in fact this year marked 15 YEARS since I started collecting seriously. Every now and then, starting back on March 7, 2020 when I got my Twitter account, I’ve been taking pictures of my models outside in my (very tiny) backyard. Due to how crazy my life has gotten I haven’t had a chance to take any this year BUT I do plan on doing so soon :)

The first four pictures were taken March 7, 2020, and the last two were taken December 31, 2023, hours before the new year.

Also the sorrel-colored jumping horse isn’t a Breyer. She’s a Peter Stone 2012 Design-A-Horse I ordered back in 2012. She *thinks* she’s a Breyer though since she’s shelved with them in my room 🤭
