Hiatus incoming

Hinamiki Week Day 1: Pre-Despair/Pre-NWP

It’s finally here fellas!! And unlike last year I’m doing the full seven days!!! I was good and got everything drawn up in advance so nothing can stop me now (take that stress and job!)

For today’s prompt I chose the Pre-Despair option because I don’t often draw the characters during their time at Hope’s Peak so this seemed like a fun opportunity to do so! Hajime is helping carry her books, what a gentleman!

"Lazarus" absolutely demands your attention

A wonderous painkiller drug that took the world by storm is revealed, three years later, to stay in the body and slowly transform into a deadly poison. Which means that, in 30 days, the 90% of the world's population who have tried the drug at least once will begin to die. In response, the NSA forms a special team of criminal misfits with useful skills and connections to locate the scientist who created the drug. That man, Dr. Skinner, has been in hiding for three years... and claims to know a cure for the wonder drug's poison.

An extremely compelling central mystery/stakes

Increasingly likable, interesting characters with some damn good dialogue and gradual drops of intriguing backstories

Gorgeously fluid animation and amazingly choreographed action

A surprisingly frothy, fun tone at many points in spite of the heavy stakes

A complex web of plot threads leading to slow-drip reveals

If Lazarus can stick the landing in its last two episodes? It will be an all-timer in the action/espionage category of anime. They'll need to stop calling Shinichirō Watanabe "the 'Cowboy Bebop' guy" and start calling him "the 'Cowboy Bebop' and 'Lazarus' guy" if he can delivery a satisfying conclusion.

......but on the other hand, if they botch the ending, it's going to severely damage the series as a whole.

320234 years and i got to finish some Naegiri. this was a few year old art that i did and left unfinished but i decided to go back and warp it up. (i'm not the best at writing dialouge)

I still love these two btw, they'll always be in my heart.

It's time for one more set of bears, this time in a pair! I completely forgot Kurokuma's tie or what was on his chain, and wish I'd gone with the part of my gut saying to make all his teeth gold. Shirokuma, on the other hand, is missing a few bandages, and... For some reason I decided the flower goes on his head. Like a Pikmin. It was included above his head a height chart, which is probably what I was remembering... And yet again, I ended up making the mascots 10cm too tall. I was going to make them 100cm, but decided to make them taller at the last minute?? Final rating: Didn't come out as well as Usami or the Monokubs, but at least I got some of the basic ideas right..?

"One Lifeline" - A Short Documentary about The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy

This is an a really cool documentary about the level of work and the level of risk that went into TooKyo Games' new, massive game.

This DOES show some artwork of some characters deaths from 5:42-5:50... but given that this is a game with 100 routes in which characters are resurrected from death almost daily, I'm not sure if that constitutes "Spoilers" or not.

They keep having to say that this is probably the last time a game of this scope and scale will be made without any assistance from "AI," and that is... sad. Really fucking sad. But probably true.

I actually never had noticed before now that we don't know what Rui Komatsuzuki looks like... ?

The Hundred Line Last Defense Academy is a serious game with dark themes.

What do you think of Rantaro's "true" talent, Ultimate Survivor? I started thinking about it, and...

Yeah, this doesn't make sense, unless you 100% commit to the idea of Danganronpa being a huge Tv show, as Tsumugi suggests.

In his survivor perk video, he's already wearing the outfit from the game. He also starts with "I don't need to introduce myself." Its entirely possible it's Tsumugi in a cosplay, using a false/no name as a loophole. Even in the first prologue, Rantaro only seems vaguely aware of who the Monokubs are.

If the V3 cast were kidnapped, Rantaro likely wouldn't have had time to record it. If he was already there, why bother changing clothes? Nobody would remember anyway.

I do think Rantaro had some tie to Danganronpa, but idk if actually won a game previously. Or at least not season 52, if there was one.

I guess I just wanted to share this theory with someone, and you were the first person who came to mind who's critical/suspicious of V3 and its "truth." So what's your opinion? Thanks!

OOF... there's a lot to consider.

We know the "contestants were kidnapped to be in this thing" is seemingly a locked-down absolute fact... or at least it is for Kaede and Shuichi. So where does that leave us?

The possibilities include:

• Option 1: Rantaro DID do a previous season and make that video, but he doesn't doing remember it (hence his uncertainty about whether "this is what [he] think[s] it is" in the early prologue). This necessitates that he (1) wore the same outfit for most of both seasons, and () got his memory wiped after the last season ended. There are a couple of ways this might be possible.

— Option 1, Sub-Option A: If some decent amount of time passed between the two seasons, then him changing clothes is certainly feasible... but this opens up other questions that make it seem a less-likely option. SUCH AS: If some time passed between the two seasons, where was Rantaro during that time? Was he out in the world until they came for him again? If so, how did no one recognize him as a previous winner/survivor? After all, both Rantaro and Kaede seem to be aware of what the presence of "Monokubs" implies, even if they've evidently never seen them before—so clearly SOME people are, at the very least, loosely aware of Monokuma and the whole Danganronpa thing, right? — Option 1, Sub-Option B: What if his memory erasure and new outfit were given to him by the production in order to support the "They all erased their knowledge of their talents and became regular people in order to hide" aspect of the eventual "Ultimate Hunt" storyline? Monotaro drops a reference to the whole 'Ultimate Hunt' thing during the pre-Ultimate prologue, so that was clearly always part of the long game for the V3 series.

• Option 2: Rantaro is actually a newcomer to Danganronpa this "season," and him being a previous winner is just a "backstory" that Team Danganronpa or whoever concocted for his "character" (with Tsumugi presumably playing the part in the video).

• Option 3: A mixture of the first two in which Rantaro did a previous season and lost his memory of it, but he also never recorded the video because that "perk" was just faked by Tsumugi for dramatic purposes. This could be an interesting way for Tsumugi to expand upon her story concept that everyone in V3 actually "volunteered/asked" to be there. Maybe Rantaro never expected he'd have to do another season, and yet they forced him into it by wiping his memory of the previous events. In this case, almost no time needs to have passed between seasons; Rantaro simply gets his memory wiped and is promptly dumped into ANOTHER season (alongside his freshly kidnapped "classmates") against his will. After all, only some viewers are likely to piece together the incongruity.

I feel like Option 1, Sub-Option B and Option 3 are the two most logical scenarios, but what about you, @n00dl3gal?
