"Well, suddenly finding I've got a whole life to live, but no…but no idea what to do with it, well, it's like having the alethiometer but no idea how to read it. […] I'm lost, really, now." They looked at her: her eyes were glittering more than usual, her chin was held high with a look she'd learned from Will without knowing it. She looked defiant as well as lost, Dame Hannah thought, and admired her for it; and the Master saw something else—he saw how the child's unconscious grace had gone, and how she was awkward in her growing body. But he loved the girl dearly, and he felt half-proud and half in awe of the beautiful adult she would be, so soon. He said, "You will never be lost while this college is standing, Lyra."

Meet the Parents (Pt 2 of 2)
"Delamares: Briefly, Sharply"
Masriel, 2-shot
Asriel checks in on Marisa. Marcel and Madame Delamare is there.
“Oh Marisa,” Madame Delamare threw her hand over her eyes, “Look what you’ve done to your face.”        Edward had guided Marisa straight back home to be tended to by her family and their servants. The rest of the party had made a half-hearted go of pretending to carry on before they followed behind without any game in hand.        Marisa groaned, “It’s only sore, it’s not broken.”        “Carrying on like this while you’re carrying a child.”        Marcel emphasized his mother’s words with a mocking tone, “While you’re carrying a child .”Â

Meet the Parents (Pt 1 of 2)
"Welcome to House Belacqua"
Masriel, 2-shot
The Coulters attend a party hoisted by Asriel's parents. Marisa scanned the crowd for Edward and found him glowing in the middle of a group including lords, bankers, and low-level politicians. The level of animation in his speech must mean that he was making a point that he thought was much more unusual than it was. Listening intently to his right was Asriel’s father. Even if she hadn’t walked by a portrait of today’s host she would be able to tell. Father and son had the same curve to their nose, the sharp scowl that couldn’t be disguised by polite composure. The grey had taken over most of his hair, no doubt set in early in life. Asriel had told Marisa little, but she was well-schooled in history, enough to fill in the blanks.

“He’s She’s deciding whether to cut her his throat or love her him forever.”
“Was that the beginning, that evening […] Beginnings are sudden but also insidious. They creep up on you sideways, they keep to the shadows, they lurk unrecognized. Then, later, they spring.”

Water Wears Away Stone (read here)
Marisa Coulter & Her Grandmother
There was the diamond ring resting on the hand resting on the armrest. Her grandmother always wore it until the day she died which was over a dozen years after her husband, Marisa’s grandfather, died. She insisted on her loyalty and fidelity though a twinkle in her eye made Marisa think this was part of some greater show. She didn’t begrudge her grandmother for that performance, it was a beautiful diamond. The painter himself tried to get her to remove it for the painting, Grandmother told Marisa, but she would not do it. At the time she had been married for less than a year and it drove her husband wild with love to see her defend the symbol of her devotion so ferociously.

Ficlet Week Challenge (schedule here)
Day 2: One Fine Day - real, dream sequence, hallucination, whatever… the character(s) get a perfect moment
Anon Request for Lyra, Marisa & Asriel, His Dark Materials
Lyra can’t see their faces. They are sliced in half right above the mouth so that looking them in the eye becomes impossible. All she can see is their bodies and their smug smiles cast down upon her. Even their daemons are conveniently out of sight. Pantalaimon is hiding in her blindspot too and though she reaches for him he does not come out of it. But Lyra doesn’t need their face to know who these people are supposed to be.Â
It’s a warm summer day and it’s Christmas Eve and it’s a rainy day indoors all at once.Â
