This song, single-handedly, was what made me begin studying Japanese. A year and a half ago, I watched this concert out of curiosity and found the performances to be pretty amazing. But Akatsuki was something else. The moment I heard it, I was in awe. I couldn’t understand a word of it but I could feel her passion, her pain, her heartache. And mine hurt in return. I understood them and there that music truly transcended language. When I read the English translation, I was in tears. The lyrics are more heart-wrenching than I imagined. However, I noticed something else: Japanese lyrics were amazingly poetic and painted a picture of the song that the English translation could barely skim the surface of... This has held true for everything in my studies, from conversations, to music, to film. English paints words, Japanese paints pictures. What more is there to discover within the language?
