When the Dust Settles…What will you do?
I’m going to tell you a story, but I’ll be honest, it doesn’t have a happy ending. In fact, it doesn’t have an ending at all. It’s a story about how one man can rise and build an empire so quickly, only to watch it fall in a blink of an eye….This is the story of how the Narco of Narcos came to meet the Queen of the East…
A series of one-shots of how Rafael Caro Quintero met Catalina Fernández and how their story progressed throughout the 80’s drug boom and the fall of the Guadalajara cartel.
Tumblr media
Hi!!! So full disclosure, this isn’t beta read. So feedback is welcome in the comments. It’s been a while since I’ve written anything too.
For some reason I went to watch Narcos: Mexico and I couldn’t get this concept out of my head. And as always, I join a fandom when it’s already dead, lol. In any case this fic will be a series of one-shots throughout the decades between Rafael and Catalina. If it develops into something else or if people have any prompts, time will tell.
Prologue
Prologue
The year was 1980, the founding of the Guadalajara cartel had been established by three men: Ernesto (Neto) Fonseca, Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo (the head of the Cartel and brains behind the operation), and Rafael Caro Quintero (the man who made it all possible). Their rise to power and wealth came from the growing and distribution of a revolutionary new strain of marijuana. Invented by Caro Quintero himself. (Not bad for a supposed illiterate Sinaloan pot farmer)
With this new product, and Felix Gallardo’s business savvy and ambition, the Guadalajara Cartel quickly gained a monopoly on Mexico’s marijuana drug trade. Now that’s enough cash to make a man fat, rich and happy. The problem is, that complacency was never part of Felix’s vocabulary. By 1983, the man had made contact with the Cali cartel and struck a bargain. 50% of their profits for transporting their cocaine and getting it to the US across the border. The partnership was successful, enough at least to get the attention of the famous Medellin Cartel and the man who runs it; the legendary Boss, Pablo Escobar Gaviria.
It was at this point in the story that Felix realized just how much money they were making thanks to the high profit margins of cocaine, and decided to move the cartel’s operations to cocaine fully, seemingly leaving Caro Quintero’s weed behind unofficially. ( you know what they say, one person’s gain is another person’s loss. And Rafa was starting feel that loss.)
And who can blame Felix? It was the 80’s, cocaine was in every club, workplace, country club, street corner, and public bathroom in the US. It became the party drug of choice. So much so that by 1984, the Guadalajara Cartel was raking in $8 billion USD thanks to their little cocaine deal. (All in a day’s work). And like Felix, Escobar was an ambitious man, set on taking his product globally.
But in order to do that, you need to expand your supply chain, and that involves hiring the right people; you need someone who’s connected, someone who can open the right doors and make the right people look elsewhere, someone in the big leagues.
Someone like Catalina Fernandez Sotomayor, otherwise known as the Queen of the East.
That’s where our story begins, in Guadalajara. The land of mariachi, tequila, and drug lords..

I’m re-watching Narcos México and I approve of this message. Especially when in real life, rafa’s family are still in the drug world and he’s still cool with chapo.
I. NEED. RAFA. Literally so mad we only got one season of him, lawd the things I would do to him. - 💄

Agatha mentoring Billy is going to be like "Yeah I'm a super VILLAIN and you want to be a super HERO so I'm just going to teach you what I know and hopefully it translates over somehow. Anyway, lesson one: Always have a cloak or dress or something to flow behind you dramatically."

i think it's funny that lestat loves walmart. he says he gets spellbound when he's in there and that he can spend hours looking at the new human products that didn't exist in his time. he likes to look at everything from electronics to dishwashing liquid, he finds it all interesting.

It’s because this version of Alicent has no balls, no conviction and no fucking agency. In the books she hates rhaenyra and loves her children, she works hard to create a faction and does a coup to usurp the throne. The show makes it seem like it’s all her father’s idea and she’s just there staring wide-eyed like she wasn’t involved in any plotting or conspiracy. It’s so annoying. For a show that wants to be feminist, Alicent never has any agency and never takes accountability for her actions (that cause thousands of death and a civil war) and blames it on the patriarchy, cause she was trying to be a good girl. Why can’t we have Alicent fight for this because she believes that this is her son’s birthright as Andal tradition states? Why can’t she want aegon to be king because she wants to feel superior as the queen mother after a lifetime of feeling inferior as the daughter of a second son? It’s not anti-feminist to have a female antagonist you know, but it is when your female character’s actions and desires revolve around the men in her life (father, husband and son).
This fucking shit bothered me a lot A LOT like really what's the fucking point of this alicent??? didn't you wanted to put your son on the throne from the beginning? Haven't you been inciting him against Rhaenyra the whole time? Now when the storm intensified and the matter became real, you withdrew and decided to abandon everything your hands had made and the worst thing is that you decided to abandon your children as well.
