Chris Ziegler - Christine Bonansea Saulut: Yugen project with music by Hugo Paquete.
Christine Bonansea & Chris Ziegler are resident artists of EU dance and technology initiative MODINA (2023-2026) at Tanzhaus NRW. Under the title YUGEN (Japanese = mystery and depth), the two are researching the tension between digital technologies and the intense physicality on stage. In the context of Temps d'Images, they provide insight into this exciting work process. Bonansea & Ziegler experiment with a motion capture suit and develop a pas de deux between a human dancer and a VR avatar in a feedback loop. This looping transmission process is interrupted and altered to find again or anew the physical and individual quality of human expression in the mirror of its artificiality.
The three-year Movement, Digital Intelligence and Interactive Audience (MODINA) project brings together three academic institutions and five dance houses in six European countries. It aims to expand the creative possibilities for contemporary dance performance and enhance the experience for audiences through the use of digital technology - with a focus on exploring artificial intelligence (AI) and audience interaction, on-site and online.
Supported MODINA EU Network on Dance and Technology, Tanzhaus NRW and MIREVI Mixed Reality Lab, FH Düsseldorf, Universität Tallinn (Estland) (Coordinator) Sõltumatu Tantsu Lava (Estland), Hochschule Düsseldorf (Deutschland), Tanzhaus NRW (Deutschland), ITI, IST-ID, Universität von Lissabon (Portugal).

The post-techno operatic experience Negentropia: O Último Homem na Terra Devastada, directed by Hugo Paquete, was specially adapted for the Dínamo Gallery. This performance transported the audience to a dystopian, post-apocalyptic universe where electronic music, noise, and interaction came together to explore the final moments of existence—"the end of a man in a harsh electronic desert, a post-apocalyptic cloud where existence collapses into madness and suffocation."
Inspired by the works of Jani Christou, Negentropia reimagined and expanded on Anaparastasis I: The Baritone (1968) and Anaparastasis III: The Pianist (1968), elevating them to new heights of intensity. The performance integrated sound, visuals, and staging into a meta-dramaturgy, using improvisation and CO2 sensor readings to evoke a cathartic reflection on human and technological collapse.
This documentation captures the essence of the October 18th performance, held at 6:30 PM at ESAP Porto (Dínamo Gallery).

I am thrilled to be part of the CENTRE COURT FESTIVAL in Cologne! This incredible event is organized by Rochus Aust and Verena Barié – a huge thank you to both of them. Here are some photos from the pre-show montage.
Presenting the Negentropy project in a three-story church tower was a challenging yet fascinating experience. We transformed the space into a multimedia opera installation with multichannel and interactive media, inviting the audience to follow us across the three different floors. This vertical exploration added a unique narrative dimension to our performance.
"NEGENTROPIA: The Last Man in the Wasteland" is a post-techno operatic journey through a post-apocalyptic world, where music, noise, and immersive soundscapes blend. Directed by Hugo Paquete, this performance will take place at LTK4 · Klangbasierte Künste Köln: Centre Court Festival der Klangbasierten Künste (Köln, Deutschland) as a site-specific adaptation.
Our exploration delves into radical ecology, astronomy, science, mysticism, and death, examining the limits of the self in the face of the abyss. The performance is a technological cathartic ritual, where myth, transcendence, and ritual create a space for confronting the apocalyptic with an aesthetic that crosses disciplines.
This immersive experience challenges the audience to confront the limits of the self amidst impending catastrophe.
This project immerses us in myth, transcendence, and ritual, challenging the audience to confront the limits of the self in the interzone of impending catastrophe.

Wednesday, May 29, 9:30 PM - 11:00 PM
Dome of the Planetário do Porto – CCV
//
Concert 2
Thursday, May 30, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Dome of the Planetário do Porto – CCV
Explore the captivating universe of contemporary acousmatic music and delve deeply into the realms of electronic sound experimentation surrounding the concept of hyperobjects. In a captivating blend of art, science, and technology, the event presented by Absonus Lab – Sound Research, Technology, and Culture in collaboration with the Porto Planetarium – Centro Ciência Viva promises two nights of sensory immersion.
At the heart of the conceptual discourse of this event lies the intriguing concept of hyperobjects. These entities challenge conventional boundaries of time and space, existing on a scale that surpasses human comprehension. Hyperobjects encompass far-reaching phenomena such as climate change and ecological crises, transcending immediate human experience. Their distributed presence poses challenges to the perception and understanding of their full nature, raising profound questions about the nature of existence. On the other hand, acousmatic music emerges as an exploration of hidden sound sources, focusing on sound detached from its visible origin. It is a form of artistic expression that fits perfectly into the exploration of hyperobject concepts, as it shares characteristics of non-locality, temporal proliferation, interobjectivity, and phased causality.
In acousmatic music, sounds are disconnected from their visual sources, allowing the listener to be immersed in an abstract sonic environment without a specific location. The compositions presented at this event enable listeners to embark on a sonic journey devoid of imagery, revealing the full potential of auditory perception in stimulating imagination and interpreting the concept of hyperobject. Interweaving creative and enigmatic expressions, the event seeks to reveal new sensory and intellectual dimensions about the limits of our apprehension of the world.
At this event, artists not only present their compositions but also offer their personal interpretations of the concepts of hyperobject. Their sounds serve as portals to unravel the mysteries of the universe, revealing new layers of meaning, encouraging everyone to ponder the beauty, cacophony, and complexity of the world that surrounds us.
Experience the works of established and emerging composers reproduced through an eight-channel audio system, transporting you to an immersive universe of sound.

Dear colleagues, This year's Ars Eletronica Festival 2022 will feature my multichannel acousmatic composition Pulsar (2022) as part of the flowing program MEDIUM SONORUM CONCERT. 10.9. 2022 Pulsar (2022) Hugo Paquete (PT) 10.9. 2022 | 12:48 Pulsar is a multichannel composition that investigates extraterrestrial sound and rhythmic noise radiation as a landscape of vast dynamic audio shapes found across the universe. Short bursts of granular dust and sequential emission are used to transition from chaos to regular music periodicity. This composition proposes a micro and macro sonic study of the concept of pulsars, which can only be seen in regions of the electromagnetic spectrum that are as obscure as powerful unknowns. This piece is a follow-up to the composition developed for Chris Ziegler’s multimedia dance performance Cosmos (2018), which was commissioned, partly developed, and performed at the ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe. It integrates elements that generate sound and music by utilizing commercial and military satellites, which is established through a process of acquiring and converting real-time sonification of satellite movement data and merging it with midi-data language. It is used to operate musical instruments, both hardware and software. Its significance highlights the satellites’ autonomy as objectionable performers, reactants that make sonic material in an ecosystem of random movements and preset computational music laws. Where science and imagination collide in the realms of auditory perception. Symposium Theme In accordance with the festival theme There Is No Planet B, the Ars Electronica digital music focus at Anton Bruckner Private University will lend its ears to immersive sonic creation as an artistic field of research sonically reflecting our world. Convinced, or at least hopeful, that multichannel speaker environments are capable of more than simply providing virtual substitute surroundings to distract us from everyday life, we want to explore the roles multichannel audio can play in reflecting and furthering our understanding of our social, physical, and biological environment. We aim to bring together artists and researchers working in the field of multichannel audio to exchange ideas on how immersive audio can help people to understand, to hear more and to activate dissent rather than simply enabling ever more intricate aural pleasures, to be sold or rented out as “experiences.” https://ars.electronica.art/planetb/de/medium-sonorum-concert/?fbclid=IwAR3Dxtr-cNP8w2T8kaxYU6zBWpv4RvPRoih2A5GffL5caBy9ogPAaJxI2Oo
