Maybe a little embarrassing, but finally my first protest ...
To those who attend protests, wow, my heart is moved to see so many people that care. Also new respects for all the signs, those are actually not that easy to make...
It feels very isolating and hopeless to see all the news of everything bad happening. But seeing so many real people who care was really beautiful. It made me feel like if there's really so many of us, then maybe we stand a chance..
Someone said thank you to people here who are under 50 as I passed by. But I was thinking of how impressed I was to see so many older people. Like this little old lady came by and was thanking everyone for coming and handing out flyers for next week. I hope we can come together as a community and make it clear that we welcome immigrants and all people.
To those who didn't go, I would recommend checking it out if you are able! I had a couple friends who were too scared to go because of the violence they saw on the news. But I found it nowhere near as scary as my imagination could come up with. I found far more people playing drums than throwing rocks (many drums and zero rocks). I can't speak for everyone's experience, but I felt safe the whole time. I would really recommend going to a protest for something you believe in, perhaps something smaller and more local if you are afraid of big crowds. And I hope to go to more!

If we can all agree to call Robert Prevost by his new chosen name of Leo XIV then we can all call trans people by their chosen names. It’s not hard.

I came here for the Fandoms, but we can really use some Katniss Everdeens right about now.
With the rapid fire of everything going wrong in the United States, it is so easy for things to slip through the cracks. The goal is to overwhelm us so we can't possibly put out all the fires. But we need to start somewhere. Here is somewhere for me.
A lot of harm is coming from careless spending cuts. But one of many issues is the discontinuation of this Billion Dollar Westher and Climate Disasters Database run by NOAA since the 80s
This is an objectively terrible decision, even if you don't believe in climate change, understanding how much something COSTS when you don't plan for it can justify how much you're going to SPEND on public infrastructure. If you WANT your city to survive for 100 years, you want more than 20 years of data on disasters. For example, lets pretend the recent LA fires were a a totally normal event that should be expected happen every once in a while completely unrelated to climate change. Los Angeles came under a lot of heat for not having a fire hydrant system designed for massive wildfires. But fire hydrants are designed so like one of them can run for 2 hours or so. Not for all of them to be running for a whole week. To do that, you would need way huger pipes and you would be spending a ton of money on a system that is rarely used. Maybe this DOES make sense to invest in preparing for these emergencies, but without any data tracking the actual cost of disasters, no one is going to want to spend their money on 10x higher water bills. Or more earthquake resistant buildings. Or more floodproof roadways.
Similarly, if you do actually look at the data on climate trends and the science behind the greenhouse effect, investment in a clean energy transition makes sense if you HAVE this data to look at. Otherwise it's just "he says she says". With clean energy technology still developing and nothing free of tradeoffs, a big argument against more clean energy is higher costs. But if you start to add up the costs that are pushed onto the person whose house just burnt down or the cost of your insurance going up or the cost of your favorite hike no longer being available or the cost of your future health care from breathing in whatever toxic chemicals got burned up... higher energy bills might be more representative of the real cost of electricity. But so many people are just trying to get by and without any semblance of data to show this, no one would want to needlessly drive up electricity bills.
However if you are mainly interested in a quick cash grab from selling off federal lands for development, and you have zero interest in planning 30 years in the future because you are already 78 years old, and you want to hide facts about climate disasters getting worse and take away data from logical people who would reason against you, then really it's a great play.
Our move. What are we going to do? Hopefully work together to figure that out. My ideas so far:
1. Find alternative organizations looking to gather similar data and donate money there to keep this collection of clinate data going
2. Spread awareness so people equipped with data and computer science skills can see where their skills would be valuable
3. Highlight where utilities, city planners, local governments, supposed universities, and caring individuals would find value in funding
4. Vocalize the need for this resource and push back against NOAA cuts (among other unreasonable cuts)

Share your ideas! Talk about ways to make tangible steps! Do what you can where you can!

LA needs a better relationship with nature in general. The challenge here, however, is that LA is so unprepared for any weather other than blue skies, that if the LA River is made of anything less smooth than concrete (like natural dirt) then heavy rainfall would catastrophically flood the nearby homes. Combined with sea level rise and climate change bringing increasingly severe storms, designing better flood management and storm water capture systems requires significant maneuvering to naturalize the river without putting lives at risk.
All I'm saying is everything has been downhill since we channelised the LA River
