just! because! a! fantasy! novel! is! written! by! a! woman! does! not! mean! it! is! Young! Adult!
to explain, there is this incessant problem, amongst publishing in general but especially amongst readers, to instantly categorize a fantasy novel as Young Adult simply because it’s written by a woman. now, there is nothing wrong with YA fiction (duh), nor is there anything wrong with women writing fantasy (again, duh), but just because a fantasy novel happens to be written by a woman does not instantly make it a YA fantasy. this problem has to do with two things: 1) misogyny bc obviously women can’t write “real fiction” (“real fiction” being Adult fiction, predominately Adult literary fiction, as genre fiction is often looked down upon as inferior) and 2) YA being considered “lesser” than Adult fiction, across all genres, but most especially SFF.
and when it comes to women trying to argue that their book isn’t YA, they often receive boatloads of ridicule afterward from people telling them that they cleary must hate the Young Adult category since they’re unwilling to allow their books to be categorized as YA. off the top of my head, three authors who’ve gotten this kind of response are R.F. Kuang, V.E. Schwab, and S.A. Chakraborty. their Adult books absolutely need to be Adult for the content, themes, and plot, and to mis-categorize them as YA is not only perpetuating the problem women face in publishing, it’s opening young readers up to the chance that they’re going to pick up a book that they might not be ready for or that they probably shouldn’t be reading. if young readers pick up an Adult book, it needs to be a conscious choice on their part, so they’re going in equipped to consume the Adult content (and R.F. Kuang’s books absolutely need to be in the Adult category, no matter that Rin is a teenager. Adult novels can focus on children). this is why i’m so adamant about the content of Young Adult books being safe for anyone from age 10 to age 18 (it’s intended for readers from age 13 - 19).
thanks for coming to my ted talk

BOOK POSTERS: MEXICAN GOTHIC BY SILVIA MORENO-GARCIA       The house had been built atop bones. And no one had noticed such an atrocity, rows and rows of people streaming into the house, into the mine, and never leaving. Never to be mourned, never to be found. The serpent does not devour its tail, it devours everything around it, voracious, its appetite never quenched.

some underrated lgbt books
I CANNOT believe that I haven’t seen more hype for these books on tumblr because they are utterly brilliant.
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. This is the most gorgeously written, atmospheric book you will ever read. It’s such a grounded, beautiful story with a whimsical, beautiful fairytale aesthetic and this precious gay love story woven through it. I just absolutely love it. And yes, this is the same author as The Night Circus!
The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski. A more plot and character driven novel- this one is high fantasy, has a similar gorgeous fairytale aesthetic and the writing is stunning. A strong female character, a lesbian love story, magic, gods, social commentary on income inequality, this book has it all. And yes, same author at The Winner’s Trilogy!
When the Moon was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore. It always saddens me when people recommend LGBT books but none of the books feature trans characters- well, this atmospheric, magic realism novel has a trans character, a strong focus on friendship and self growth and I LOVE it. Also this book has a beautiful prose style, especially the IMAGERY.
Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan is one of the most interestingly narrated novels I have ever read. It’s first person plural, told from the POV of the victims of the AIDs epidemic. It is emotional and real and raw, and it will make you cry, but it is such an important novel. The writing and characterisation is incredible and trust me, this is the book if you need to *feel*.
We Are Okay by Nina Lacour. Lacour is a brilliant author. This one is a contemporary lesbian lovestory, but it’s also about college and growing up and family and so so much more. Our protagonist, Marin’s sadness feels so intensely real, and yet it is one of the most hopeful books I have read. A high recommendation!
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. If you are a young female, especially a WOC, I think this one should be compulsory reading. Never have I felt more empowered after finishing a book- I laughed, I cried, I was genuinely shocked by the plot twists, and now I call this one of my all time favourites. A stunningly structured novel, with a driving plot, intensely real characters and super well written- I PROMISE you will love this one.

When you’re writing and you can clearly see in your mind the exact expression a character is wearing or hear the exact nonverbal sound they are making, but completely fail at coming up with a way to explain it.

The Archeron Sisters & Folklore Lyrics
“But the love of sisters needs no words. It does not depend on memories, or mementos, or proof. It runs as deep as a heartbeat. It is as ever present as a pulse.”

Wet book rescue
Valuable information if some of your prized books were affected by recent flooding. The video even shows you what to do if you can’t dry the book out right away.

Part of me is just like ‘I don’t feel like writing fics anymore, I should start the new book idea I have had in my head quite some time, although I need to proofread the other one’
But also if that book ever got out, the Church would freaking hunt me down, because it is pretty much against it and witch hunts and such (and the main character is a bisexual depressed girl who had a fling with Anastasia Romanov).
Shit... this is bad...
... but let me know if you think that this might be interesting...

16 LGBT+ Books by Transgender and Non-binary Black Authors
As with my LGBT+ List, I’m seeing a lot of the same books on my dash, so I spent a few hours researching some lesser-known books. These books fall across a variety of genres and age group.

People complaining about how Ava from ‘Warrior Nun’ is an annoying main character.
Me, a fan of Alina Starkov ‘... listen if we got tasked with superpowers we’d all be like ‘fuck you let me finish my pina cola’... so... SHE IS REAL’
