So i was rewatching dead poets society and i noticed that in this shot

we see the gun laying there with neil's left hand so it implies the gun was in his left hand, but neil is right handed so why would he take the gun in his left hand that doesn't make sense but then i remembered this deleted scene

where the poets all eat with their left hand because they wanted to get rid of old habits. This doesn't need to be connected but I can't think of a different reason

his father, the one who took care of his family, the one who would go out of his way to do so for all those who needed it. a name like darry would never be able to reach such a standard. it was something he would have to live with.

context is very important so i’ll also gather some other pointers that other people have been saying as well for emphasis (plus my words too):

- the whole act was obviously non-consensual to yes it counts as sexual assault. that’s the baseline

- within context, idc how old knox is or whether he knew it in the back of his head (or if this shit was normalized in the time period idc idc it’s still wrong) but he quite literally went after chris during school hours, kept trying to force himself on her during the night of the play when she was not just checking up on him but also had the intent of literally confronting him and telling him to stop what he’s doing (AND SHE LITERALLY SAID THAT TO HIS FACE), AND of course the really important part: knox says that he would actually k*ll himself if he never got with chris- and honestly if we look into the whole love vs infatuation vs limerence concepts, bro was in a freaky stage crossing over from infatuation to LIMERENCE cause ain’t no way your edgy ass saying this rn and doing all this for what ?!

- ^ looking at the predatory behavior from above, it’s safe to say that yes this is an assault case your honor

- not to mention the scene in the original draft of the script (btw the dps book for those who are familiar with it is based on the original draft so i think this scene is in the book but don’t take my word for it) was actually set up to be a sexual assault scene cause knox quite literally feels up chris without her consent in a sexual way cause she thinks it’s chet touching her and no one else !!!

- so yeah. if the scene was that weird and odd that they had to change it to him simply kissing her while unconscious, then yes i’m sure they still wanted to convey a sense of a different type of problem that happens irl

- random tidbit: i think a lot of us have been in very questionable situations that had some tension in it and later think abt and realize “yo wait that’s low key assault??” like 😭😭 my friend and i were just talking about this recently and its a little concerning !! that’s why context matters !!!!!!

adding onto this entire discussion and discourse around cherry (and other female characters in the outsiders alike such as sylvia or sandy etc): i feel like we forget once in a while that the outsiders can technically be considered an unreliable narrator book (or story in general but im going more off of the book) in SOME aspects considering it’s narrated by a fourteen year old greaser who probs has picked up on some questionable views from the environment around him or from his own beliefs internally. is there nuances here and there and is there room for ponyboy to believe in something different than his environment? absolutely. that’s normal.

but consider this: having an unreliable narrator in ponyboy’s sense is the sole reason why female characters are not as developed in this book simply cause he doesn’t have the extent or doesn’t want to have the extent to understand their points of views (and technically, considering this is all told by ponyboy IN A SCHOOL ESSAY MAY I EMPHASIZE, he has the full narrative choice in the end to not include them if he doesn’t want to or to tell the story with obvious bias- especially if he’s told to write about himself and his experiences specifically like an autobiography of sorts). it leads to people believing his end more and not giving the other characters any thought or question or even empathy atp

like how do yall not question the background characters’s motives even ONCE- especially if said characters hold very important relations to the main characters y’all know and love ???

and also the whole discussion about the reality of the greasers is a whole other thing but i can get into that another time cause that goes into some views of romanticizing the unromantic + how some of the movie casting added even more of the negative effects of pretty privilege which messed up the authenticity of the book characters. in this essay i will-

man most likely to do anything, captain of the soccer team, editor of the school annual, cambridge bound, thigh man, member of the dead poets society, and the english teacher everyone wishes they had.

i wanna know the dad lore this man has built up over time like it must be exponentially soul binding.

I think that, as a fandom (the few people we are), we should give way more attention to John Keating. That man has so much potential as a character, yet we give more support to the DPS, which while being protagonists, doesn't mean we should ignore such a good character that is Keating. In this essay I will.

i would like to mention that there is also a mildly rare but obligatory middle line where i do not support the original character of knox overstreet (especially him in the book like how tf do you write the book after the movie script and make him worse like make it make sense!?!?), however, i will cheer and scream at the edge of a rooftop for fanon/hc knox overstreet. that insufferable air headed gay twink has a spot in the dps for a reason☝️
