Out of My Mind | Chapter Four
Masterlist | Previous / Next
Shikamaru Nara x GNReader x Neji Hyuga
Coming from a prominent and secretive clan in the Hidden Leaf Village was already bad enough. Your justu was rarely ever seen and mostly hidden by the protective nature of your father and the elders of your clan. You were taught from a young age how to fight and you were easily one of the best fighters your age. Your secretive nature doesn’t keep the attention off of you, especially not from two of the brightest people in the chunin exams with you.
| warnings: angry Shikamaru, Neji loosens up, Shikamaru and choji crash a date.
Word count: 2150
Tumblr media
Telling your friends that you were suddenly engaged to be married is a chore in itself. Soon it would be known all throughout the village, but you wanted to be the one to make it known to Shikamaru and Choji yourself. They’re your best friends and it wouldn’t feel right for them to find out through someone else.
Though perhaps, if they hadn't been training in the same field that Gai’s team had been training in when you arrived, things could have gone more according to plan.
The minute Rock Lee spots you, he’s jumping up and down calling out loudly and congratulating you, seemingly unaware of the weight that the engagement carries. “Y/N! Congrats on the engagement! I think you and Neji make a wonderful couple!”
You lock eyes with him, your mouth hanging open before you’re quickly turning to face your frozen team.
Shikamaru approaches you with more energy than you’d ever seen him exert in the years since you had known him. His expression was even colder than usual as he grits his teeth, coming to a halt in front of you. “When were you planning on telling me that you’re engaged? And to him of all people? I didn’t even know you were seeing anyone!”
Oh, he’s mad mad… He’s even raising his voice.
“Shikamaru, calm down,” you tell him, trying to keep your voice level. “I didn’t have a choice. You knew this was going to happen.”
“What? That you’re going to marry Hyuga? You saw what he did to Hinata.” He clenches his fists, growing rather agitated as he notices Neji’s full attention is on the two of you.
You close your eyes and take a deep breath, “For someone so damn smart, you sure are as dumb as a rock, Shikamaru. My elders arranged it. I had no choice. They wanted someone from a noble clan and Neji was the only who…” You trail off realizing what you were going to say.
“Only one who what? I thought you were getting some kind of say in this! You said your dad had been advocating for you.” Shikamaru was genuinely upset and while he couldn’t quite piece together exactly why yet, he couldn’t help but take out his frustration on you. “Enlighten me.”
“Only one who I didn't look like I wanted to kill. And he stood up for me. I almost died in the preliminaries, Shika. I’m the sole heir and the elders can’t take any more chances of losing me than they already have. They want more heirs as soon as possible to protect our line and marrying me off to the highest bidder is the best option for them.” You take a deep breath, closing your eyes. “My dad cannot protect me from my elders my whole life. I’ve been too focused on being a ninja to think about the other responsibilities that come with being a L/N that it’s taking away more of my freedoms. That’s why I’m not getting a chance to choose anymore.”
Shikamaru falls silent at this while Choji approaches the two of you silently, Asuma standing not too far off as he waits for either a fight to break out, as it wouldn’t be the first time that you and Shikamaru had pushed each other far enough, or the two of you simply ignore the pressing issue of your impending marriage to the man no more than a mere thirty feet from where you currently stand.
After a moment more, with Team Gai taking a moment to watch the scene before them unfold, Shikamaru finally sighs, letting his head fall back. “This is such a drag…” He turns and begins walking up the path back into the busy center of the village. He waves over his shoulder for you and Choji to follow after him, “Come on. I’m starving, I woke up way too late to eat breakfast this morning.”
Choji immediately rushes after him, excited by the mention of food even with a bag of chips in his hand. Asuma comes to a stop beside you and crosses his arms over his chest as you turn to meet his eye. “Ignore him. You’re one of the few people in this world that he trusts fully and he is afraid to lose you. That’s all.”
“I’m getting married, it's not like I’ll be abandoning him.” You were confused. Sure, you and Shikamaru were close and sure, he’s your best friend, but that doesn’t automatically mean that just because you’re getting married to someone that you would be abandoning your best friend for him. You weren’t even sure if you were truly excited about your prospective marriage to Neji.
“That’s not what it feels like to him. You just need to keep that in mind. It’s arranged, sure, but it still blindsides your whole team and even myself. They’ll get over it eventually, but right now you need to focus on getting back to full health so that you can start training again. You need another shot at the chunin exams since you failed already,” he winks at you before ruffling your hair and heading off after your two teammates, hoping to convince Choji not to run up the bill too much before he gets there.
You take a moment to yourself, lagging behind the group and glancing back at Team Gai as Neji makes his way towards you. Normally, you’d be quick to turn on your heel and escape from the confrontation, but right now, you have no will or motivation to do so.
When he comes to a stop beside you, fingers twitching at his side before he clenches his fist to stop himself from reaching out to you. “Are you okay? I didn’t know that Lee would do that.”
Much like in the garden just twenty-four hours before the engagement was made official, a tense silence falls over the two of you. You aren’t sure what to say. Your mind is racing with the thoughts that your friends were afraid of losing you and that was the excuse for Shikamaru’s behavior, but something else felt like it was nagging you too.
You force a smile and nod, clearing your throat as you finally meet his intense gaze. “I’m okay. I just wasn’t expecting Shika to be so mad about it. I wanted to be the one to tell him and Choji.”
His brows furrow and he shifts uncomfortably, “Oh.” He clears his throat, and looks away as his hand comes to the back of his neck and rubs awkwardly. Mind you, he was about to do something he had never done before, but he knows it is necessary for the union with you. He wanted to make it as painless as possible for both of you and that meant putting himself into uncomfortable positions which quite possibly could drive more of a wedge between you and your team. “Would you want to go to lunch with me?”
You raise an eyebrow, noticing how the question seemed to struggle to make it past his lips before you’re opening your mouth to speak up to him. “I was going to go eat with the rest of my team and sensei…” Noticing a brief and unfamiliar look flicker across his face, you begin to backtrack, “But we could go to dinner? That way you can go home and get some rest, maybe change clothes and shower. Not that you smell or look bad, you don’t, but at least we wouldn’t be as pressed for time, you know?”
You laugh nervously, wondering how you had managed to insult the man in such a short amount of time by rejecting his date and practically saying he smelt bad from his training.
“I’m not upset with you if that’s why you’re making that face.”
“This is just my face!” You shoot back without even thinking about it, your eyes widening.
“Pity me for I’ll be married to that face in two months.” He smirks slightly when he sees you roll your eyes, clearing his throat, “i just wanted to tell you that I… I think your idea of dinner is a much better idea. You’re right, it will give us more time together and you need to spend some time with your friends?” He sounds a bit unsure but he makes a point to nod in the direction that they had disappeared in. “Go on. I’ll pick you up at… seven. You better be ready. I’m not a very patient man.”
“Yeah… I can tell.”
Tumblr media
Seven o’clock had come and gone, now you and Neji were seated in quite possibly what could be considered one of the nicest restaurants in the whole village. You were surprised that this was the place he had chosen to bring you to and you were wondering if he would have done this under any other circumstance.
“I’ve never been on a date before… I have never seen the purpose of spending money and trying to be flashy just to impress someone.” And in all honesty, if it weren’t for this engagement, Neji supposes he would have never found him in the position to be on a date or have even asked anyone to begin with. He knows the only reason he was chosen was because of just how close he is to the main house. The head of the clan is the brother of his father, but for a mere few minutes, Neji was unlucky enough to be a part of a branch house instead.
However in a sense, Neji supposes that he was lucky enough to be chosen instead of being passed over. It did him a little favor… He supposes this could a part of his uncle trying to make amends for the the death of his father, but he also knows that even if he had refused Hiashi’s proposal to be the one married off to the L/N clan, that the curse mark would have surely been used on him. It irks him, how even though he was thankful he’d been given a chance to escape his clan, he wonders just how much you and your family would be able to protect him from the head house.
You didn’t mark those of your clan who just happened to be born unlucky and torment them, though your clan did have strict limitations, but perhaps your clan wasn’t much better than his own. Would your elders call for his uncle in the event that he did something that upset them even in the slightest just to torment him back into line? Would you care enough to protect him against your elders, or would you be just as submissive as you had been in the meeting with him and Hiashi even as the future head of your clan?
“It has its perks, I suppose.” You mumble, smoothing out your clothes and feeling rather underdressed as you look up to him.
“You look fine. You’re going to put more wrinkles on your face than there are on your clothes if you keep making that face.” His attempt at a joke, which is rather funny in your opinion, has your mouth gaping at him.
You laugh and bring a hand to your forehead, “I don’t have that many wrinkles, Neji.”
He leans forward a little and folds his arms on the table, something he was taught not to do but is somehow forgetting, “Not yet you don’t, but keep that up and you’ll look like you’re fifty by the time you’re only twenty-five years old.”
“Well what about you?” You raise an eyebrow and lean forward, mimicking his actions without even realizing that you were doing it. “All that frowning you do all the time, you definitely are gonna have me beat in the wrinkle department.” You bite your lip, letting your eyes wander over his face as though you were trying to count the wrinkles on his face already but he quickly sits back and folds his hands in his lap as a semblance of a smile leaves his face.
Caught off guard by the sudden change in demeanor, you scoff a bit, having hoped there was a possibility that this was going to be a nice and easy transition for you and him into your new lives but it seems as though it was going to be anything but-
“Y/N! There you are!”
Your eyes widen and you suddenly understand what the issue was to begin with. You sigh softly and look over Choji who was waving rather enthusiastically with a silently plotting Shikamarua at his side, seemingly unaware that the two of you would have been there. You meet Neji’s eyes and begin apologizing, not knowing how the two of them had found you when even you didn’t know where Neji had been planning on taking you for dinner.

As Promised | Katsuki Bakugo x GNReader
Masterlist
| tw: mental health, anxiety, dread, self doubt, not understanding why you feel the way you do, being angry at yourself. If this could be triggering for you, do not read. This is a comfort fic but will feature these themes.
| I wrote this for someone who is very important in my life and is going through some stuff. This is your reminder because you know who you are, I love you. And I promise this is only temporary. It’ll get better.
| established relationship, married Bakugo & reader, Bakugo coming home from a day at work as a the number two hero finds his spouse curled up in bed and crying.
Tumblr media
Katsuki Bakugo was proudly the number two hero, but the one thing he is even more proud of is his marriage to you. Somehow, the constantly grumpy man had managed to marry someone as wonderful and patient as you.
One of the learning curves he had with you, was learning to be patient with you when your mental health was on the dark side. It wasn’t often and most of the time he could tell when it was getting bad. But recently, his days have been longer which meant he didn’t have as much time with you. More often than not, he was gone by the time you woke up or you were asleep by the time he came home.
Today was going to be different though. He’d gotten off patrol early and planned on coming home to you to make you dinner for a change instead of eating the cold leftovers you left for him in the fridge.
It was nearing five in the afternoon when he walked into the dark entryway of the house. He looks around in confusion. It was quiet. Entirely too quiet. Your car was in the driveway and you hadn’t texted him to mention that you’d be going out anywhere with family or friends.
He sets the bags of groceries down on the kitchen counter and works his way through the house, dread filling his stomach as he heads up the stairs to your shared bedroom. As he pushes the door open, he pauses, his eyes needed to adjust to the dark before he realizes there’s a lump on his side of the bed sniffling.
“Oh,” he whispers, brows furrowed. He immediately tries to shut off the side of his brain that requires his immediate volume level to be loud and aggressive. He reaches up and adjusts the volume on his hearing aide, a side effect from his quirk nearly blowing his eardrums out for the past ten plus years.
He climbs into bed beside you, knowing you always found comfort in his scent, even if he smelt like burnt caramel half the time. His legs shift under the blankets and he slips his arm beneath your shoulders, pulling you into his chest and allowing you to cry silently into him.
He doesn’t say anything. He just waits until you find it in you to speak up… That’s why he turned his hearing aide up, he knows how quiet you’ll be when you finally find the courage to speak.
“I’m sorry.”
He hums softly, staring up at the ceiling and counting the glow in the dark star stickers he’d put up for you during a particularly rainy week when you expressed you just wanted to stargaze.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me… It won’t stop. I can't stop it.” He feels you tense up against him and with his free hand, he takes yours which had been resting on his chest, shushing you softly.
“Don’t say that. There’s nothing wrong with you…” You look up at him and he smiles at you, “Okay there’s a few things wrong with you. You married me, that counts… But it’s okay…” He swallows nervously, remembering the advice that Ejiro had told him in being there for you. “What you feel is very valid. It’s okay to feel like this and I can promise you, it won’t last. Think of all the times you’ve felt like this…”
He pauses, shifting down a little and turning onto his side to face you, keeping his arm beneath your head and brushing his calloused fingers over your face with his free hand. “Every time you have, you have come back from that feeling stronger and braver.”
“I’m just so mad… I don’t get it. It’s like it came out of nowhere… I just feel so anxious and scared and it won’t stop…”
He shakes his head, smiling sadly at you. “Sometimes it happens that way… I know it sucks and it hurts, but if there’s anything I can promise it's that it is temporary, okay?”
You nod and press your face against his neck, inhaling his scent and beginning to relax as you let his words begin to sink in. If Katsuki said it was going to be okay… Then he must be right.
“Have I ever told you how lucky I am to be married to you?” He mumbles, kissing your temple.
“I don’t think you have.”
“You keep me grounded. You remind me of how worthy I am of love and of being a hero. And I just want to be able to do the same thing for you. I want to be here and I want to take care of you no matter what the circumstances are. In sickness and in health, and that includes moments like this. I love you, Y/N.”
Before he knows it, you’re crying again and he briefly panics, wondering if he’d said something wrong but your grip tightens on him and he relaxes, only pulling you in closer to him and tangling your legs together. “I promise… It gets better.”

| family dynamics, asshole elders, talks of an arranged marriage, playing with the format, unfortunately it’s safe to assume that the reader is more than likely afab. But it will still remain as neutral as I can make it, I promise
Word Count: 1836
Tumblr media
Something that you always understood was inevitable as you grew from a small child was the talk of an arranged marriage. Since discharging from the hospital, you had noticed that your elders had found the matter more pressing than ever. Your father had put the talk off for as long as he was able to, but with a near death experience during an exam, he could no longer protect you from your own family. As much as he wished for you to have a choice in who you love and end up with, he knows that your focus is on your career as a ninja, which opens up the door for everyone else to take charge of that part of your life.
So as much as you hated it, even as you’re still bandaged and suffering the consequences of the battle you were in, you still sit silently in your formalwear as representative after representative for different clans comes in and vouches for what family you should marry into, or rather that they be allowed to marry into your own.
You sit up a little more as one of your clan’s servants pours another serving of hot tea into your cup while another clears the now empty spot before you and your father. Elders sat on either side of you at the table, leaving the seats directly across from you and your father open and welcome for your guests and potential suitors.
Your elders were quite pleased with the selection of men available to you, all coming from prominent families. They were, however, strongly displeased with the site of you and how uninterested you seemed in the whole ordeal. While your father was rather amused, knowing your tolerance for this whole situation was nearly nonexistent, he would still occasionally nudge you in order for you to give some type of response to those across from you, vying for your hand in marriage.
“Next is the Hyuga clan.” You sigh again, entirely disinterested as two new cups were set down on the table across from you. You pick up your own cup and take a slow, careful sip of the piping hot tea. Your gaze lifts, having expected to see a very different member of the clan in question, someone lower on the totem pole, not Neji Hyuga and his uncle.
Neji would rather be anywhere else and if it weren’t for the curse mark on his forehead, he’s positive that he would actually be anywhere else but under the wing of his uncle who had killed his father.
He hated him.
Hiashi knew this…
But he also knew the importance of getting the L/N clan on the Hyuga’s side. Both men knew how vital it would be to have the bloodlines mesh and Hiashi wasn’t sure he could wait for the possibility of any grandchildren to marry into the L/N clan. He also knew that the L/N’s would like demand that Neji renounce any claim to the Hyuga line and devote himself solely to Y/N if there was a union between the two.
“I see the two of you know each other.” Hiashi Hyuga nods towards you, greeting you and your father politely.
You nod quietly, though you’re giving a much better reaction than your elders had expected and it seems to them that a match with the great Hyuga clan may be possible. This was the most you’d interacted with a suitor all day.
“How are you feeling?”
It takes you a good long pause to realize that Neji had asked the question, more importantly that he had asked you the question. You lift your head and manage a small smile in his direction, “Sore, mostly, but I’m managing.”
“Well you wouldn’t have to manage anything if you would just listen to us and not become a ninja!” One of the elders speaks up, scolding you and raising their voice as they go.
Instead of retorting to the verbal assault like Neji has seen you do in passing to your teammates when they simply pick at you, you fall silent, dropping your head in submission to the old, dare he say, hag.
He’s surprised.
In fact, Neji is so surprised that he does something he never thought he would ever have done in a million years. He speaks out and stands up for you.
“Y/N is a great ninja. They deserve every chance to show off just how strong they are. They lost one battle after days of being out in a forest with little food, no water, and having already fought and sustained many injuries in order to get into the preliminaries. They deserve to be a ninja if they do very well decide to be.”
Silence falls over the room and you can almost hear the servants gasping, bracing for a swift hit, or to witness the dangerous power of the illusion jutsu as it’s finest on a guest. However, it never happens.
The look on Neji’s face is stern and never wavering, his brows furrowed as he waits for the elder to challenge him. He only looks away when he notices you move, entirely missing the proud smile on your father’s face or the exchanged glances between him and Hiashi.
You offer him a small smile and nod, a silent thank you for coming to your defense and surprisingly silencing the elder. Though you know that their vote in favor of the man was suddenly retracted in his defiance, possibly ruining any hopes they had of you marrying him of all people.
Your father clears his throat, quietly suggesting that you take a break and a walk through the gardens. Hiashi nudges Neji and suggests the same, leaving you to wonder how hard your father would be fighting for you to marry the only man you’d shown any emotion towards while the elders would now be dead set on making sure the union would never come from anyone who defied or disobeyed them.
As you try to stand, still aching from your injuries, Neji works his way around to you, slipping an arm carefully beneath yours and guiding you slowly to your feet. His arm remains linked with yours as he carefully guides you out of the house and you can already hear the same elder who had scolded you raising her voice at your father.
“You didn’t need to stand up for me.”
“You’re not one to usually take that kind of heat either though.”
“My aunts and uncles are different.” Well technically they were your fathers aunts and uncles. “They tried to forbid me from becoming a Ninja because I’m the sole heir to the clan…”
“That’s ridiculous…” He whispers, “Whether you became a ninja or not, you would still face dangers for simply being the sole heir.” He falls silent as he observes you, coming to a stop and helping you to sit on the stone carved bench in the gardens in front of a small koi pond. “Why didn’t your father ever have any more children if this is such an issue?”
You laugh at the question, though it’s dry and unamused, “My mother died when I was a child and my father always said he could never put a woman through a loveless marriage for the sake of the elders… So here I am. The only child and sole heir. His brothers are dead and they never had children… It’s up to me.”
He doesn’t say anything after that, opting to face the pond in silence, a small show of respect to your mother whom he never knew and you could barely remember. He breaks the silence not a moment later, “What happens if they decide we’re the best fit for one another? Your father didn’t want a loveless marriage but you’ll be forced into one…”
“Ouch, Neji.”
He narrows his eyes, a silent warning.
“I suppose… They will have you renounce any Hyuga claim you may have…”
He scoffs, “I’m from a branch house, there is no claim there.”
You roll your eyes, poking your tongue in your cheek before glancing away from him again. “If we are to be married, they’ll have us go through a courtship first… dates and shit. Our children will more than likely have my clan’s name… If we have any.”
“If we don’t?”
“Then I suppose I’ll be disowned.”
Oh…
“I never thought I’d be in a situation like this. I suppose Hinata’s father wants to gather as much power as possible and assumes that combining our clans will give him that.”
You smirk at this, “Bold of your uncle to assume that he’ll gain anything from us. If my elders have anything to do with it, Hiashi and the Hyuga clan will gain nothing from us but a few children from us. The illusion jutsu has been a prized secret of my clan for centuries. This wouldn’t be the Hyuga’s first attempt at trying to get our secret and it won’t be the last.”
Silence again.
Neji liked the sound of that. He liked the defiance by you and your family, denying his own clan of something they’ve sought out for ages. He would happily be a part of that, even playing dumb for his spouse and children if it meant defying the clan that has made his life hell… But now he’s beginning to realize just what his father meant all those years ago about getting you on his side.
You were his chance to escape.
“Do you think we could ever love each other?”
That was the loaded question you’d been asking yourself since you left that hot and stuffy room, but you’re more surprised that it fell from his lips before your own.
You glance at him, finding his gaze already locked on your face. “The only example of love I’ve ever seen is that of my father visiting my mothers grave. I have no…”
“I don’t either.”
“Then… I guess we will just have to learn then.”
“I suppose so,” he whispers, trailing off as he hears your father calling for the two of you, no doubt to announce your new engagement to one another. He quietly stands and offers you a hand, helping you to your feet much like he’d done before coming out to the garden.
This time the walk back to the house felt like it was dragging. He was about to be told he’d be married to you in the next year, he was sure of it. And as the two of you stop before the two middle aged men and your elders, the words fall from their lips, encouraging the two of you to spend more time with one another, he thinks he’s imagining you squeezing his arm and the way your body relaxes at the announcement.
He can’t help but feel relieved too…
You’d do well to make them your friend. They may be of some help to you one day.
I understand, father.

I feel like this is an unpopular opinion, but more people should read incomplete/unfinished/in-progress fanfics.
I've noticed this huge trend where creators on tiktok and tumblr who will be explaining how to use Archive Of Our Own to new users and they always say "and make sure to scroll down and click completed only" or how people will go out of their way to mention they only read completed fics 'because they were traumatized when they forgot to check the dates and didn't realize this fic hadn't been updated since 2012'.
The thing is - I think by not engaging with and/or actively avoiding writer's WIPs readers are potentially adding to the aggregate of abandoned works. Now this obviously isn't the case for all abandoned fics, anything from major life events, to loss of interest, to getting busy can be a reason for a fic getting abandoned - but at least on some level I just know that writers are quitting while they're ahead when they aren't garnering any response or feedback because reading WIPs has become unpopular. If you're worried about reading something that hasn't been updated since 2012 then you can use the date updated function to sort out old fics.
Anyways, support your favorite fanfic writers by engaging with their WIPs.

If you ever feel like you don't contribute to fandom because you "only" comment—
A regular serial commenter just joined a fandom Discord server I'm on and people are coming out of the woodwork to thank her for her service to the fandom, expressing how much joy her comments on their works bring them.
Remember—they're never only comments.

Really wish we had more Naruto movies or novels centered on the blank period, but not on random missions or that stuff.
I want to see Naruto learning about politics and Kakashi struggling to build a new Konoha now that most of its shadows are gone.
I want to hear about the how Ino, Shikamaru and Choji came back from the war as clan leaders and how they transitioned to their new roles while still mourning the lost of their parents.
I want to read about Tenten and Lee adjusting to the fact Neji is not there, that every other team came back with their three members but they didn't.
I want to know what the civilians did, if Hinata and Hanabi pushed for some reformations on the clan, about the kids who went home without parents and if Naruto saw them and thought of himself, if Kakashi made new laws to avoid future cases of kids ending up like Sasuke or Naruto, lonely and rejected for no good reason.
Do they have ptsd about the tsukuyomi? What about the first Kage reunion where they fight post war? How often did they have to deal with people stopping them to talk about the war, since they were heroes? When they sat to decide how the story would be told, who was there? What did they say?
I want to read about Sasuke going back to the Uchiha compound and Naruto staring at Minato's face on the Hokage mountain and reading Obito's name again on the memorial and Sakura an endless string of ghosts crossing her door on the hospital, kids and teens and adults searching a deeper medicine, something to close the wounds the war left behind. Did Sai ever paint how the world is after it almost ended? Did Yamato ever tell anyone who wished he wasn't the one taking care of Orochimaru?
I don't know, it's cool to see their kids growing up and seeing them as parents, but I want to read about the healing and the step by step, waking up to realize the war was won but your body doesn't know it, going out to the whiplash of seeing a new world developing, childhood over, innocence lost, do you dare to dream about new things just yet?

Coming from a prominent and secretive clan in the Hidden Leaf Village was already bad enough. Your justu was rarely ever seen and mostly hidden by the protective nature of your father and the elders of your clan. You were taught from a young age how to fight and you were easily one of the best fighters your age. Your secretive nature doesn’t keep the attention off of you, especially not from two of the brightest people in the chunin exams with you.
| family dynamics, asshole elders, talks of an arranged marriage, playing with the format, unfortunately it’s safe to assume that the reader is more than likely afab. But it will still remain as neutral as I can make it, I promise

Your justu was rarely ever seen and mostly hidden by the protective nature of your father and the elders of your clan. You were taught from a young age how to fight and you were easily one of the best fighters your age. Your secretive nature doesn’t keep the attention off of you, especially not from two of the brightest people in the chunin exams with you.
| not edited, mentions of an awkward Neji, Shikamaru is probably gonna end up trying to establish dominance over Neji 🫡 and no, I have no idea who YN is gonna end up with

Shikamaru had barely left your bedside in the days following the preliminaries. He saw no point in training for something you wouldn’t be able to do with him, regardless of Asuma and Choji warning him that when you woke up, you’d probably kick his ass for not taking this seriously. You’d been friends with each other since your early days at the academy, and since you were older and growing into your roles to hopefully become jonin one day, you only began to grow closer with one another.
In spite of the elders of your clan warning you that Shikamaru was a good for nothing, lazy bum, you still remained friends with him. You often invited him over to your family home just to irk them, knowing how much they despised seeing him making himself right at home and even Choji more often than not, raiding the kitchen.
Neither man was their favorite guest, despite your father warning them to mind their tongues, they made sure to you and your friends well aware of their distaste for them. And in return, you made sure to have them over as often as possible.
The dark haired man looks up from his lap when the door to your hospital room slides open. There was yet another nurse there to administer even more medicine. He’d lost count at this point of how many times they would come in each day to drug you up again. He wasn’t allowed to know what they were giving you, he wasn’t family. So he would bid his time for your father to come and see you while he was there because he always seemed to just miss him each time.
“I know the drill,” he sighs as he stands, the nurse nodding as he leaves the room, sliding the door shut behind him so she could tend to you. He heads down the hall to the waiting room, standing at the window with his hands in his pockets.
He couldn’t remember a time when he’d been more terrified than the sight of you at the end of your match lying lifeless on the ground. In fact, he’s certain that was the first time he may have ever felt true fear. He was riddled with it, frozen. He has never frozen up like that before.
It was the reason why he never left your bedside until Asuma came and forced him away for the night or the nurses came in to check on you. But he was right back by your side the next morning, always bringing an extra breakfast sandwich just in case you were awake. It has been four days now and the doctors were saying you were due to wake any moment now.
He looks over his shoulder when he hears footsteps approaching, huffing when he sees Neji and TenTen. The woman smiles at him, raising a hand to wave, “How’s Y/N doing?” She offers a warm smile, hoping to bring a sense of comfort to the man who looks like he hasn’t slept in a week.
“Still not awake, such a drag…” He tucks his hands into his pockets and glances over at Neji, images of his fight with his own cousin and one of your closest friends flashing through his head.
Neji narrows his pale eyes at the man, holding a basket of fruit that TenTen was forcing him to carry. She said it would make him look like a caring friend to their own teammate who had yet to wake as well.
“All that fruit will rot before Lee wakes up too, you know?” Shikamaru turns back to the windows, leaning against the windowsill as he watches the street for Choji, knowing that now that it was around lunch, he would be showing up with something to eat for both of them while they both visit you.
Neji grits his teeth and yet calmly walks down the hallway to his teammates room, opting rather to ignore the man’s rather brash comment. He pauses about halfway there when he sees you in your hospital bed. It wasn’t the first time, though this time you were slowly moving, pushing yourself to sit up the best you could with how weak and sore you were.
He looks around and sees no one who he could get to help you, ultimately and reluctantly stepping in and setting the fruit basket down on your bedside table. Your gaze snaps up to meet his own as he slips an arm beneath yours, his other arm going around your waist to help you sit up against the headboard.
You hiss in pain and lean back, closing your eyes and letting out a deep breath. “Thank you,” you whisper, turning your head to meet his. Your throat feels scratchy and your mouth is dry. When you notice the fruit basket, you look up at him rather confused, “You brought a fruit basket?”
He has a moment of brief panic, but he can’t bring himself to tell you no. He knows you were expecting to see Shikamaru by your bedside and despite the echoing of his father’s words to make you his friend, of which he was still a bit put off by, he simply offers an awkward and weak smile.
You don’t say anything, taking note of how awkward he seems and you simply tear your gaze away. You look around the room and spot the water on the table beside the window. “Um, Neji…” He remains motionless, waiting for you to speak. “Can I have a glass of water? My throat… It hurts and my mouth is dry. That sound guy really took me out…” You laugh nervously and you don’t notice the brief flash of anger on his face, simply casting your gaze in the opposite direction of him.
He jumps up a little too quickly, going straight for the pitcher of water, pouring some into the glass before returning to your side. You take it and just like someone with absolutely no manners, you practically chug the water, a drop or two sliding down your chin. You sigh as you lower it, licking your lips and wiping your mouth, coughing quietly.
Neji looks at you with a bit of concern, opening his mouth to ask if you’re okay before your name is called rather loudly from the door. Choji rushes in with three bags of food in his hands, bringing way more than enough for the three of you to eat. Shikamaru steps in behind him and narrows his eyes at Neji, quickly wiping the look of distaste away as he sits beside you, setting the now empty glass down beside the basket.
With your attention elsewhere, answering all of Choji’s questions of concern, Neji quietly slips out of the room, abandoning all plans of going to see Rock Lee, mumbling to TenTen about whatever important business he has to tend to.
It briefly crosses his mind as he listens to you laugh and converse from down the hall of whether or not Lee and TenTen would have the same dedication to visiting him as your teammates do to you. He sighs softly, stepping out on the street and walking back towards his small apartment away from the Hyuga clan’s villa.
“Neji brought me a fruit basket,” you speak up, gesturing to the array of fresh fruit on the nightstand. Shikamaru raises an eyebrow, confused. As far as he was concerned that basket was meant to be taken to a still unconscious Rock Lee.
What had taken place to have caused Neji to leave it there?
He was someone who normally acted on impulse.
“Oh boy! That was nice of him! He must have a crush on you or something? He doesn’t usually do stuff like that!”
“No way!” Shikamaru huffs, “That guy doesn’t care about anyone but himself. There’s no way he’d have a crush on anyone.”
You laugh it off, shaking your head and throwing a rather annoyed and amused glance in Shikamaru’s direction. Choji looks between the two of you, taking a break from stuffing food in his mouth. He’s quiet, the only sound could be heard from the ruffling of his bag of chips.
“Don’t ever say something that stupid again, Choji.” He nods a bit, not taking Shikamaru’s words to heart. It wasn’t a big deal, he was joking.
Well, mostly.
Smack!
“Don’t hit them, you idiot!” Shikamaru groans, snatching the bag of chips from Choji that you had tried to take a few from, passing it right to you much to the other man’s dismay.

THROUGH A RAPIST’S EYES” (PLS TAKE TIME TO READ THIS. It may save a life, It may save your life.)
An Article from Neena Susan Thomas
“Through a rapist’s eyes. A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interview…ed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:
1] The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun! , braid, or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.
2] The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who’s clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.
3] They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.
4] The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.
5] Number two is office parking lots/garages.
6] Number three is public restrooms.
7] The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.
8] If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn’t worth it because it will be time-consuming.
9] These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.
10] Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.
POINTS THAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER:
1] If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: can’t believe it is so cold out here, we’re in for a bad winter. Now that you’ve seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.
2] If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.
3] If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.
4] If someone grabs you, you can’t beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh – HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.
5] After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy’s parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you’ll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he’s out of there.
6] When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.
7] Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don’t dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel little silly at the time, but you’d feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.
FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AS WELL ….
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.
2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you…. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON’T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS , LEAVE.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
a. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. ( DO THIS TOO BEFORE RIDING A TAXI CAB) .
b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
c. Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked “for help” into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and it’s better safe than sorry.
