Punctuating Dialogue

➸ “This is a sentence.”

➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.

➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”

➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”

➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”

➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”

➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.

“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.

“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”

➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”

➸ “Hey!” she shouted, “Sometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.”

However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!

➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.

If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)

➸ “This applies to dashes too. Inside quotations dashes typically express—“

“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.

➸ “You’ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses don’t have a comma after them either…” she said.

➸ “My teacher said, ‘Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.’”

➸ “Use paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,” he said.

“The readers will know it’s someone else speaking.”

➸ “If it’s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.

“This shows it’s the same character continuing to speak.”

using polite language and manners, not interrupting or talking over anyone

no crossing of arms and relaxed hands

the best minor character on severance is hands down dr asal reghabi. i love every time she turns up and helps mark but also leaves him completely confused and tormented lol. she straight up kills a man in front of him and drags the body away and just leaves mark standing there. she jump scares him in a parking lot at night and pleads to get in his car, all while insulting his plans to get info to his innie. mark lets her perform *another* dubious experimental surgical procedure on his brain, and then she moves into his house. she told him brain surgery wasn’t an exact science. she’s going through his stuff. she’s asking for eggnog. they need eggnog. you gotta get eggnog, mark. i love her.

going insane over the fact that helena's father never realised it was helly using the OTC until she literally stood on stage and screamed it out, but irving immediately knew something was up when helena came back pretending to be helly. the fact helena clearly studied helly's interactions with mark, recognised the significance of the attraction between them and tried to replicate it as well as she could, but she never managed to convincingly do the same with irving because she just couldn't recognise that kind of love as existing, let alone mattering- a familial bond, a relationship that rhymes with a father figure. she never expected it. why would irving pay attention to who helly is? why would he notice? why would he care? but of course he does. helly was never cruel. fetid moppet.
