You know what else? A queer person having an unhappy ending would undercut every other character's happy ending because of the effect on themes.

Eleven is happy because she's an independent woman recovered from abuse? Nope, it's because she's straight.

Lucas is proud to be a loser and nerd and is happy not trying to compensate for his blackness by fitting in other ways? Wrong. His happy ending is because he's straight, unlike some people.

Nancy living happily despite her extreme grief at a young age, and living the life she wants instead the one expected of her? She's allowed that life only because it's still straight.

It affects EVERYONE'S happy ending. If you make the queer people unhappy now the reason for the others' happiness is their straightness. It destroys the idea of "happy endings despite hardship and oppression" because we can POINT to a place where that's inconsistent.

Robin is part of a theme. Don't let her happy ending be an exception to the theme of only straight people being happy - or a message that it's just about queer men in the 80s not being happy. The happy characters do not CONTRAST Will by being at least not that kind of minority.

Can we talk about how FAST Mike turned around. He was turned by the time Will said "us". It was "Well what about-" and he was there. That's literally the "responded a little to quick" trope. He was waiting for Will to call him. He was still surprised because he didn't actually expect him to. But he was waiting. He didn't respond to Will's words. He responded to the first hint of Will's voice.
