ok so. mild sotr spoilers, but not really.
tbosas film ended with “snow lands on top”, which was a rendition of mockingjay: part 1’s “victory” score. which was perfect.
i’m calling it now, mostly because i have not been able to stop thinking about it and if it doesn’t happen i will actually be pretty upset, but i need the sotr film to end with “there are worse games to play” from mockingjay: part 2. you know, the score that plays when katniss is shown with her children and peeta, under the sun, finally at peace if not close to it.
i need sotr to end with that score, but instead of katniss it’s haymitch, sitting in the meadow in front of the rising sun, his geese all around him and an empty space beside him where lenore dove would have sat. where she does sit.
#i have such a specific idea of what the ending could look like#lionsgate hire me now#i know exactly how we’re ending this movie#i’m such a sucker for movie scores and the way music is used in the thg movie series is like such a good example of this#oh look at that i’m crying again#anyway#i love you haymitch abernathy you deserve the world#sunrise on the reaping spoilers#sunrise on the reaping#suzanne collins#haymitch abernathy#lenore dove#lenore dove baird#the hunger games#the ballad of songbirds and snakes

‼️minor sotr spoilers‼️
everytime haymitch called the district six tributes his “doves” my heart broke. it’s just such a simple yet beautiful and bittersweet thing. i don’t know i loved it yet simultaneously hated it, knowing what would happen.

going insane about haymitch the rebellion’s sacrificial lamb. they saw a kid honor the dead and make a mockery of snow in a public setting and knew he’d earned himself a death sentence. so they recruit him. ask him to do something that will only increase the target on his back. maybe it’s heartless but it’s for the greater good. they can achieve their aims of rebellion and let him make his death mean something in the process. it’s the best they can make of an unbearable situation
but then it doesn’t work. the arena doesn’t break and haymitch doesn’t die and the world and the games go on. and the personal consequences are dire.
fast forward twenty four years and now haymitch is the adult and he’s got the same kind of teenager on his hands and the same heartless choices in his lap. how much do you think it killed him to feed her to the same machine, when he knows intimately exactly how high the cost of failure can be?

‼️SOTR SPOILERS‼️
sunrise on the reaping really just drove forward the concept that both haymitch, katniss, and the rest of the tributes picked to be this possible revolutionary figure were just as manipulated by those who wanted to bring down the hunger games/capitol as they were by the capitol themselves.
plutarch trying to connect to haymitch merely to get him to destroy the arena, and not being there for him in the aftermath when it doesn’t work, only making it worse by saying, “you’re what we’re looking for, it’s just not you that is going to help.” even beetee, while maybe having more sympathy than plutarch ever did, placed that responsibility onto haymitch - a newly sixteen year old boy, knowing this will most likely kill him if the games don’t do it first.
and then, later, with katniss, it’s the exact same with plutarch and coin and the rest of the rebel leaders (some excluded, of course) that were focused on the picture they were painting in bringing down the capitol rather than the people they were hurting.
it really just goes to show how those in power, no matter what side they’re on, will always use their power to get what they want. and haymitch, katniss, and the thousands of other tributes and district and capitol citizens who were caught in the cross fire were never the priority.
#don’t know how much this makes sense#just finished the book like an hour ago#but i’m gonna be thinking about it for a long time#sotr spoilers#sunrise on the reaping spoilers

"Then what good am I to you?"
Oh, Colin. You can love her. You can love her in a way she has never been loved. You can protect her heart. You can support her and listen to her and love her and just be there for her. That's all Penelope has ever really wanted, at the end of the day.
