Name: Therosaurus angelicus
Name Meaning: Hunting of Wild Beasts Reptile
First Described: 1840
Described By: Fitzinger
Classification: Dinosauria, Ornithischia, Genasauria, Neornithischia, Cerapoda, Ornithopoda, Iguanodontia
Therosaurus is a tooth taxon, sadly, only known and named off of a collection of teeth. Originally described as Iguanodon, it in fact is the original type specimen of Iguanodon - the teeth that were found and used to name the genus. As more complete remains of Iguanodon were found and assigned to it, the teeth were left behind in importance. However, since I. angelicus was so poorly known, in 2000 the type specimen for Iguanodon was changed to I. bernissartensis, which is much better known and with more complete remains. Since the teeth of I. angelicus were different from the teeth of I. bernissartensis, it was given the oldest extra genus name these teeth had been assigned to, Therosaurus. The animal was found in Tilgate Forest, Whitemans Green, Sussex, England, dating back to about 140 to 136 million years ago, in the Berriasian to Valanginian ages of the Early Cretaceous.
