BKDK as young Fated Lovers. Or Not. META post.

“Katsuki lies awake some nights, warm freckled body asleep beside him, thinking what if he's only Izuku's first love.” 

I have a serious problem with any relationship—even BKDK—being Fated Lovers. It's recurrent in my writings: I believe in Choice over Fate. I make BKDK grow and realize what is truly important before I give them the happy ending we all crave for.  

I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You Red Strings i dream of flowers (and their always sad) The Choice Difficult But Mine Be Strangers Again [Okay, I will stop here because I just realized all my stories have this theme. Welp!]

I strongly believe couples should work to stay together, not just to get together. Fate doesn't hack it. That's like arranged marriage by the gods—author handwaving for a happy ending. I do think that BKDK have a better chance than most for getting that happily ever after simply because of their long history and the underlying trust and respect they have for each other. 'Love' can't be enough to hold you together if you think your partner is trash. It's why I twitch when I see fics where Katsuki is horrible to Izuku and he just...takes it. [Whaaaat? Go shoot style Katsuki's ass, Deku!] But anyway, Fated Lovers is particularly hard to handle when they get together as teenagers. I’ve never been a fan of Romeo and Juliet and lest we forget—they died! Let's do a poll, how many among you have friends who are still with their first boy/girlfriend? I do have some—my brother even married his first girlfriend/college sweetheart and, multiple kids later, they're still together. But I know of many more who didn't last.

They don't even have to do 'bad' things. No one has to cheat or be assholes. Sometimes people just grow up and instead of growing closer, they grow apart. We are so malleable at 19, still destined to change and be the final versions of ourselves.

So how will BKDK stay together? Well, sometimes they don't. I've made them separate and end their young relationships many times in many ways because change is a catalyst for growth. And also, when your partner is as stubborn as Izuku and as emotionally constipated as Katsuki, sometimes the best way to value what you have, is for you to lose it first.

Okay, but where is the happy ending in all this, you ask. I write them as getting back together or just simply weathering the storm throughout because I am a romantic at heart. I BELIEVE. That if you work at it enough, if you choose to love that person again and again, every day, over all other temptations, never once believing that the grass is greener on the other side, then you can make it. And knowing what we know about Deku and his Kacchan, it's so much easier to believe that they can do it. They're too stubborn not to, they're too attached to each other to let go. You know what the funny thing is, here be MANGA SPOILERS but Katsuki's reactions to Deku in the last few chapters has me changing my mind about BKDK dynamics. I always thought they'd take years to get together because Katsuki needs a lot of time to process his feelings. But the way the manga is going, he's in full command of his emotions, and knows what's important. He's becoming more Masaru's sensitive son, than Mitsuki's gremlin boy.

And that's GREAT. Except it's mucking with my headcanons and making writing bkdk difficult. It's like charting new territory, having new stories to explore how they will react. Okay, so maybe that's not a downside after all...

Anyway, my point is, if BKDK get together in their last year of UA, that's one hell of an uphill climb to stay together. It's usually why I write them as aged-up, in their mid or late 20s, so they have a realistic chance of staying together even after the fic I write ends. Why am I meta-writing about this? Because I'm writing a fic where BKDK are only 20 years old, and Katsuki is nowhere near ready for a commitment with Izuku. But time is running out because of Plot Reasons. He will either grow up FAST or miss his chance and spend the rest of his life thinking about that point in his life where he watched the door close on his future and he let Izuku go to someone else.

We'll see what Katsuki does ❤️

BKDK Dynamics

I carry a Deku in my head who's at peace with his relationship with Katsuki. He's not asking for more, he's really truly happy to be where they are because when once you've resigned yourself to nothing — having something, no matter how little, is already precious.

He's no longer on the outside looking in; he's not chasing after Katsuki's back. They're true rivals now. Possibly even friends. When he stands beside him, shoulder to shoulder, Katsuki doesn't shove him away. When he smiles at him, Katsuki sometimes grins back.

Katsuki looks at him when he talks and doesn't dismiss what he has to say outright. And he knows—he KNOWS—more than Katsuki simply allowing Deku to stand beside him, it's that Deku has earned himself a place beside Katsuki. So, Deku's good. He's okay.

It's KATSUKI who is unsettled. Who dreams of green eyes when he's asleep, and is distracted by sweetly curved lips when he's awake. It eats at him, the contentment he sees in Deku's smiles; pisses him off. How can Deku stand so close and not battle the urge to touch?

It's KATSUKI who's dissatisfied. Discontented. Unhappy with the way things are. He steals touches during patrol, glances in the locker rooms and common shower, fodder for his wet dreams. Katsuki yearns for something he's not sure he wants.
