creating a book series called "big fear shakespeare" where i expect you to know every reference and definition and instead there are comments in the margins saying things like "what kind of idiot wouldn't know this?"

nothing will ever be as transcendentally bad as "of hotspur coldspur" but i forgot how much "o were mine eyeballs into bullets turned / that i in rage might shoot them at your faces" makes me WHEEZE. i love when one of the best writers of all time can't write <3

Guys was anyone going to tell me that titus andronicus is actually like. good
#like yeah its sensationalist theatre but thats the whole point#grief IS messy and ugly and violent and it DOES just goes round in circles#tragedy is a cycle one must choose to perpetuate but there is never the possibility you might make any other choice#its not just shakespeares slasher flick!! there are characters!! there are themes!!#was no one gonna tell me this#titus andronicus#shakesposting

henry v is the only play in the world where you get a detailed description of a man kissing his dying cousin on the mouth IMMEDIATELY followed by the main character committing a war crime. who is doing it like william shakespeare

tangentially related to hal/hamlet parallels but one of my hottest shakespeare takes is that juliet is also hamlet. it’s something something. the being hyper intelligent, their greatest (and in many cases only) power being their wits and their ability to talk circles around everyone else, the father issues, the being trapped within their family home and family. and they ONLY escape in death. of course they’re different in lots of ways but just something about a little more than kin and less than kind. I’ll look to like if looking liking move. something about kids who are SO careful with their language
you are unbelievably right about this btw. do you understand how right you are about this. like impossibly right. the entire time i was watching the r&j i just saw i was thinking about this. the fact that she too has her emotions and particularly her pain routinely minimized and dismissed and ignored by the people around her. the way every adult in her life one by one proves that they cannot be trusted to help her, just to pity her. the way she is so fucking smart and so quick with language and like you said SO SO SO SO SO FUCKING CAREFUL because she HAS TO BE and so rawly emotional and simultaneously so brilliant beyond her years and brave and terrified. i'm going to rip my fucking hair out. in the characters of juliet and hamlet we have shakespeare's understanding that being a teenager and especially a teenage girl is one of the actual worst things that can happen to a person

i think the moment that solidified me becoming truly and utterly crazy about dt's richard ii is The look in his eyes as the bishop of carlisle puts the crown back on his head after the let us talk of kings speech like . Oh My God he literally poured out his soul and cried about how lonely he was because the position of king demanded he had to be removed from everyone else and never be a real human person and How can he be king when he feels things like everyone else even if he wishes he didn't . and the response he gets to this from one of his most loyal followers is "ok my lord but wise men don't cry about their problems they instead find ways to prevent this from happening. giving into your weakness is just letting bolingbroke win"
#god i LOVE this production#also the way richard is SO insanely lignuistically self-destructive#like he absolutely did not have to do All That when bolingbroke first returns#but hes just so achingly desperate to be a person. like he must on some level recognise that being a monarch is tearing him apart#anyway prev said it better#he can't relinquish it himself because it's all he knows but he is begging for someone to do it to him#yep#richard ii#rb

productions of richard ii should include the fact that in the historical deposition richard had to put a ring on henrys hand like in a marriage. i think that would add a certain je ne sais quoi to this disastrous fucked up mess
#oh yeah thats filed under things to go insane about#youre so right about the white dress as well oh my GOD#richard ii#rb

*richard ii at coachella in an embroidered robe, crowned and sceptered, sweating profusely* now, we are no fancy physician, but would you folk know where an anointed roi such as ourselves could obtain some acid? now, we are no big city avocat, but could any of you fine youths point a humble serviteur de dieu such as ourselves in the direction of some fucking acid?
