Does this mean we can take the Drogheda electrification plan all the way to Belfast? Please, Belfast deserves electrified rail
Just going to post this

That's fair. Mind you, now I think about it, there's something to be said for the reactivated line as a downtown loop. I don't think commuter trains would be particularly suitable for the service pattern, but maybe something like the Flirts they're playing with in southern California. But something tells me getting the mbta to get a new train so vastly different to the current fleet would be about as easy completely closing the tunnel to cars and making it the ultimate Boston rail tunnel
Why is the North South Rail Link a waste of time ? (at least compared to the Grand Junction West alternative)
Well the short answer is there’s too much shit in the way.
Now, unless you somehow talk Massdot into using literally the big dig right of way from the Massdot Merrygoround to the Bill Buckner bridge in all his shortstop fuckup glory there will never be trains on the short way. Can you imagine trying to get massdot to do literally exactly big dig 2 right next to Big Dig 1 since they had such a good time the first time? or, even better, busting down the walls to a big dig tunnel to replace lanes of car traffic with lanes of rail? You would be shot. They would give you a 6 minute head start before a pack of greyhound buses tore you limb from limb. They would invent hoax medieval torture devices to test on you for quality assurance purposes before marketing them to the sex dungeon in se7en.
But consider: A railway that goes straight from south station to north station. Through cambridge. It’s right there we don’t need to build shit the MBTA already used it for non revenue moves as recently as 2010. And, get this, it’s fuckin gorgeous. it goes over the charles and everything.

Here she is. Real life girl next door rail infrastructure that will fuck you. All we need to do is fix it up a little bit. But see people from out of state don’t get it. They think, damn, that hypothetical bitch bad as hell. They don’t comprehend that the baddest bitch is the one that’s there for you in the form of rail infrastructure that is revenue line ready in 3-5 years of inexpensive maintenance. And all you fucking new yorkers who want to take the downeaster can get on the subway fuck you

Imma be honest Boston, as much as I love reactivating old rail lines
Tumblr media
This doesn't feel like a useful commection
Throughrunning trains would more than likely be an absolute boon for residents of the Boston area, making travel between different areas of the bay much more seamless. In some instances, making rail more preferable to driving even on suburb to suburb trips.
This doesn't really fix anything beyond changing two short trips into one trip that ends up being longer than the two
I think a model would be Philly's commuter tunnel, which ended up being a game changer for the region's rail connectivity. I think instead of looking at it as connecting New York to Maine, think of a Boston rail tunnel as connecting Salem to Franklin. Lowell to Brockton. Concord to Hingham.
I grant you that construction would be a headache, and MassDot don't have a great track record when it comes to digging tunnels, but the wonders a direct connection between north and south station would do for connectivity, frequency, and convenience would genuinely be transformative for Boston area riders.
And hey, the Northeast regional is electrified while the downeaster isnt. New Yorkers will still have to transfer.
Mind you, I like the idea of taking lanes from the big dig tunnel. It would be a headache but hey, worth a shot

Irish rail would like to remind passengers that playing a Bluetooth speaker on DART services is a fine punishable by the tying of your party to the tracks at Howth junction, one on the Malahide line and the rest on the Howth line, except for one who must operate the switch. The Howth train is rapidly approaching at this time.

If we were to invest in a high speed rail corridor in Ireland, I think linking Galway, Limerick and Cork would be a great idea.
Investing in connecting those areas would help make them jointly competitive with Dublin, spreading the economy more evenly across the south and west of the country via a sort of triple metro area. It could would as a bonus alleviate the stress on Dublin's housing market. Better connectivity in the rest of the country allows for large businesses to base themselves elsewhere, creating opportunities for those areas, as well as alleviating the stress on Dublin's housing market. The concentration of the economy around the capital has focused economic opportunity around it also, meaning anyone who wants a good job os moving to Dublin, straining the city's infrastructure and housing market to the brink. So spread it out, bring the opportunities to the west and give people who want to work in higher paying sectors to base themselves in the west.
A well done HSR line (defined by speeds of 200kmh/125mph and above) could connect the 3 in around 90 mins, maybe even allowing for a direct connection to Shannon airport along the way. You could probably use the right of way of the N20 and M18 to simplify planning also.
It would never happen though. We can't even build one lousy metro line in Dublin after all.

Yeah I'd be down with this. under these conditions, getting flung in front of the DART would be great. And the Luas drivers could finally get their wish and ram any pedestrian who dares interfere with the tram
If I lived in a world where healing magic could restore you to perfect health no matter how bad your injuries I would 110% get hit by a train.

This weekends closures were put in place as this is the weekend of the Rugby championship match in Dublin, and I don't much care for Rugby. Get fucked, and continue to do so until Dublin has a proper ice hockey team like Belfast does. These are our demands, and we will continue to schedule closures during Rugby matches until they are met

Worth noting tho, the Metro is still on the books, running public consultations as recently as November. Although its slow going, its fully planned out, and has not been cancelled yet.
You can check for details here, and maybe voice your support to your TD to help nudge things along.
Or don't. I'm a train, not a cop
Have you seen the "New DART carriges" that totally weren't meant to be that Dublin Underground That Never Happened™? They're so blatantly metro cars its insane skdjksjf

Right so I'm sure we're all aware of the general economic divide of Dublin's inner city: south inner city is posh, north inner city is not. And here's some economic data from the CSO
Tumblr media
Note the concentration of low income areas in the Northeast inner city in particular. Now compare to the distribution of DART stations close to the inner city.
Tumblr media
Worth noting as well that Clontarf road was opened in 1997, while the initial system began operation in 1984. Basically on the South side, in high income areas, you have double the number of stations within the same span of track (what you're seeing here is roughly 4km either side of the Liffey) compared to the lower income areas along the line on the north side. (Grand Canal Dock was also a later addition, 2001)
Idk if it was on purpose but well... yeah. Frankly there's a prime spot for a station at East Wall Road, just south of the bridge over the Tolka. There's space either side of the track that faces a street, meaning construction wouldn't necessitate any demolition. Plus the offices being built in the area could serve to boost ridership for commuters.
I'd also like to put one on Ossory Rd, but I don't have a strong case for it, I just think it would be a nicer distribution. Same goes for rebuilding old Howth Rd. Station in Clontarf. Not sure it needs it, but the map woulf me much more even
Damn, just noticed the classism of the DART network. Kinda sucks ngl.

See, the problem is that they started digging in England, which is already as close to hell as you can get
if you've ever used the London Underground you might have noticed that it often gets uncomfortably hot. the reason for this is actually that its builders dug too greedily & too deep and as a result the trains are very close to the fires of hell. hope that helps.

The number 1 reason for a United Ireland is so that we can have a unified rail fare system. Love you Translink but would it kill you to charge the same as we do on Dublin-Belfast? Plus, leap cards in Belfast and Derry, how fun would that be??
