One of the fun things about living out here is the abundance of rocks

There are no rocks in new orleans (swamp, mud) but here, i fill my pockets with rocks everywhere i go.

The coal industry is trying to pass a law so they can pollute our water even more

This bill would weaken water protections in the state to be equal to federal standards.

The federal standards were recently weakened so that pollution is regulated only in "navigable waters." Polluting small streams, creeks, ponds, wetlands, and groundwater is fine, according to our Supreme Court.

This is, of course, ridiculous, because the small streams and creeks flow into the big streams and rivers. And lots of people in rural areas use wells for water, so the groundwater is water that people drink.

Kentucky's freshwater ecosystems are the most biodiverse in the world only excepting Alabama and Tennessee. That's right, in the WORLD.

Call your reps and yell at them. And anybody you know has a well, tell them how the government wants to poison it.

Appetite 3

I've been trying to get more comfortable working in dark pigments - starting with an almost all black panel and making the image by pulling paint away. It's a really fun challenge to find color combinations that can look as deep dark as possible while remaining dynamic. Hard to photograph though!

This is third (or fourth?) piece I've done on the theme of guts and viscera and appetites. A chapter in Trickster Makes This World by Lewis Hyde on intestines and appetites inspired these pieces - it talks about digestion and and eating and shitting being the thing that makes us alive, mortal, able to change and grow and connect to the earth.
