So magecraft patents are a thing in the Nasuverse. Mages who come up with magical formulas/spells/items etc can file patents with the Mage’s Association so that everyone who uses those patents as part of rituals or whatever has to pay the person who owns it. Patents and payments are handled by the Carillon Observatory at the Clock Tower, and for places further from Britain the Clock Tower has set up branches that can detect patented magecraft usage, such as the one in Singapore called the Luxcarta.
