Civic Action Assessment of Issue
1. Although I have expanded my knowledge on my issue through the research done for blog post, I have not really volunteered my time to act upon my issue yet.
2. As I have gained more information on my issue, and continue to do I would like to inform more people about the problem, most likely through the use of social media. now that I can vote I will also practice that right by voting on things that benefit my issue.

Political Party Action
Republican
the Republican platform did not have anything stating my issue. they did mention in their prison reform section that prisoners who are being mistreated by others in jail should be helped out and protected by the prison. this would apply to youth who are mistreated by other prisoners creating a some what better environment for them in prison. I do agree with this but I think it should be taken further with at least separation of youth and adults.
Democrat
the Democratic party believes that it starts with preventing them from doing bad stuff in the first place. they want to fix the school to prison pipeline problem by providing a better environment for all students. By providing the means of counseling and other help, it would decrease the amount of children getting in trouble in the first place. they also believe in a better system for children once they do get in trouble, more focused on helping them rather then punishing them. I agree with their views, they are much similar to mine as they focus on helping the kids out rather then making it worse for them, or keeping it the same.
Libertarian
in their platform there was nothing specifically on youth incarceration. they do say that they believe victimless crimes such as gambling, drug use, etc should not be kept illegal because it creates more problems in the legal system. this may apply to youth who are incarcerated for these reasons and who would benefit if this was changed. I would agree to an extent that some victimless crimes that are illegal shouldn't be.
Green
The Green party believes that youth should not be housed with adults in prison. they believe violent and non-violent juvenile offenders should also be housed separately. they also believed that their should be less cases per judge so they can have more time for each case to ensure it goes its best. I would agree with the green party on the housing separation ideas as well as the judge stance. It was unclear whether they wanted youth out of prisons in general which is something I believe and they may disagree with.
Peace and Freedom
the Peace and freedom party believe that Juveniles should not be tried the same way as an adult in court. I would agree because I don think they should be put in prisons at that age but rather given help in a rehabilitation center.
I think I agree with the democratic party the most which doesn't really surprise me because I share many views with that party. as of right now I’m not sure if I would vote for Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate.

Media Assessment of Issue
A Teen-Ager in Solitary Confinement
https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/a-teen-ager-in-solitary-confinement
SUBJECT: solitary confinement can create or worsen mental health illnesses/issues among incarcerated youths
AUTHOR: Lisa Armstrong. Armstrong is an award winning journalist who on top of the New Yorker has written for the New York Times, The Rolling Stones,National Geographic and many more well know publications
CONTEXT: produced in american in 2017 it is fairly new information on the topic, but only really concerns the american people because it is not an specifically an international issue.
AUDIENCE: this was produced by the New Yorker, a liberal influenced news source. it was made for the american people who are the ones who have the power to change the problem. the source ins’t influenced by things outside the US and concerns all the people so it may conform to what the Americans want/ would agree with.
PERSPECTIVE: this article is subjective. the Author believes that there is a greater problem created when children are placed in solitary confident. I would agree because it seems like the wrong way to deal with things.
SIGNIFICANCE: the author uses someones who is experiencing the problem’s first person accounts on it, what happened, how it felt, what it did to him mentally, etc. it mentions that about 2/3 of incarcerated youth have at least 1 mental illness, which is not given a source to back it.
Review Ordered After Michigan Judge Sends Black Teen to Juvenile Detention for Skipping Online Schoolwork
https://time.com/5867041/michigan-judge-teen-juvenile-detention-homework/
SUBJECT: Children are being incarcerated for unfair/unjust reasons.
AUTHOR: Majita Gajanan. Gajanan is a writer who has also written for the Guardian, and Vanity Fair.
CONTEXT: This source is from the united states in July 2020. the information is pretty contemporary making it a useful source, non international issue.
AUDIENCE: The target audience is the american people to inform them what is going on inside their country and judicial/prison system. it may have an objective of getting the people to at upon the problem making it slightly bias as well.
PERSPECTIVE: This article is objective, with the other side being that her punishment for not doing her work is fair an taking her to juvenile detention makes sense.
SIGNIFICANCE: the evidence used comes from the situation Grace is in as well as stats from other sources that were cited.
Keeping Children Out Of Jail Is ‘Main Street’ Conservatism
https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/keeping-children-out-of-jail-is-main-street-conservatism/
SUBJECT: youth incarceration is unfair and unjust and right now is a perfect time for change
AUTHOR: Emily Mooney is a a resident policy fellow on the criminal-justice team at the R Street Institute, she has written for other sources including the Federalist Society and the Washington Examiner
CONTEXT: written in united states in August 2020. like mentioned before focus on internal US affair and is fairly contemporary.
AUDIENCE: This article targets the US people during the Covid pandemic and is to peruse them against the current government laws with youth incarceration. there is most likely bias towards the authors point.
PERSPECTIVE: This article is objective with the other side arguing that in it’s current state the US should continue with youth incarceration because they believe it works SIGNIFICANCE: The other uses statistics and survey information to prove their claim with sources to back them up.
All the articles were on the same side, believing that youth incarceration was wrong and that reform was needed. each article came from a source that was either skewed liberal, neutral or skewed conservative. each article focused on different aspects of incarceration weather its the actual part in jail or the process of getting there.
I would agree most with the first article because I think that one of the biggest ways to help keep kids out of it is to get them mental health help instead. incarceration can make the problems that sometimes are the reason the kid is there even worse rather than actually helping them.

CONCEPTUALIZING THE ISSUE AND ASSESSING TYPES OF ACTION
1. I chose youth incarceration reform as my issue because I think that its a problem that shouldn’t exist, and should have never existed for that matter. It is something that I find quite crazy and something that needs to be fixed.
2. Under the justice system children under the age of 18 can still be put in jail for breaking the law or doing something bad. Children are placed in the same prisons as adults and treated equally by the justice system as them in many states. The government decides who can be tried in court and what punishment can be met from their actions. the government makes the decision allowing for youth to still be incarcerated.
3. In order for change to be seen with this issue we need first for people to become educated on the problem. We need people to understand that is an important issue that needs change. With the support of many people it can be taken to the supreme court in order to create a federal law protecting you from this immoral justice system.
