i am so so glad that this is how we get to say goodbye to the old animation: a heartfelt ladynoir rooftop scene where time stands still and it’s just the two of them, by each other’s side like always. even if everything else seems bleak, even if they don’t yet know how to overcome this new challenge, it’s still them against the world. and that’s what matters

Very interesting question !

I do think that, considering her harsh upbringing, Maomao wouldn't like to "use her assets" herself. She'd maybe do it under extreme duress but other than that, if we suppose she keeps the same personality (it's likely, since she'd remain Luomen's girl), she'd prefer using her smarts instead.

She'd probably find even more techniques to make herself "uglier" like the freckles. Or try to make her body parts seem flatter.

The Emperor once said he'd like to take her as concubine if she was curvier but he very likely was joking to tease Jinshi. Since he's the one in love with Maomao, the Emperor would just leave her alone.

The big downside would be that the madam would probably have forced her to work in the brothel considering she'd be more desirable. Maomao being Maomao, she'd be even more disgusted.

(and Jinshi would probably still be in love with her considering it's her intellect and disgusted stares that made him have a crush 😂)

Maomao and Shisui are not romantic, they’re abused and traumatized young women who’ve never had the opportunity to have real friendships with women their own age. Shisui taking care of Maomao and fussing over her has more to do with the lack of care she received as a child and wanting to give that to someone for the time she can vs anything romantic. She treats Maomao like a doting mother would a daughter, she helps her eat, dresses her, does her hair, tries to protect her, all the things she wished her own mother would’ve done. It’s heartbreaking but gives us the picture of two broken young girls trying to navigate this small bit of connection in a decidedly twisted environment. Especially given Maomao is meant to be a captive of sorts and completely unaware for awhile of all the machinations going on around her.
